K, sit back #nativetwitter, I have a story to tell about a canoe, a map, and a 4 year research project.
When I was but a wide-eyed undergrad, dipping my toes into a bachelor's in anthropology, a class in archaeology briefly discussed a dugout canoe found in the Mississippi delta that carbon dated to around 1500 years old. It was taken to Texas A&M and disappeared into their lab.
This is not uncommon, many artifacts take years to fully research, but it piqued my curiosity because there were canoe-based cultures throughout the Mississippi for a long time. One of the oldest was the Poverty Point culture which goes back nearly 3000 years.

A great article by @rebeccanagle, exposing the power of family stories to mislead #elizabethwarren into believing her anti-Cherokee ancestors were actually "Cherokee".…
@rebeccanagle I've been diving deep into the available "Eastern métis" archives to see how family stories/lore is mobilized to support fellow white people's efforts to become "Indigenous".

The thread below explores some specific court testimony ...…
@rebeccanagle 1-White man claiming bbq where family members wore "red face" was traditional "powwow"
2-White man claiming that being called "savage" by his grandmother was "proof" he was "Indigenous" today.
3-White man confused about whether Swiss brothers-in-law are "Indigenous" or not ...

The Amazon the largest lung in our world is on fire😭.
It's time for humanity to stop & think seriously about what it is doing🤨.
Is this our legacy for future generations😠?
Is money more important than conserving nature😡?
🗣️We need the forests to survive.
🗣️Protect nature!

Let's Talk: @NikkiBeachWorld and their track record of deeply rooted racism.
Nikki Beach Hotel + Resorts are a global luxury brand created by Jack Penrod after striking it big on @McDonalds franchising. It began with a small spring break party pad in Miami and has since grown.
Recently the birbsphere found out about the recent "Ojibwa Party" they threw at their pop up location for the @Festival_Cannes. They have been throwing Cannes parties for a couple of years now to court celebrities and increase their profile.
People like @VeraWangGang @MariahCarey @blakelively @woodyallen #jesseeisenberg #kristenstewart #michellerodriguez and MANY other celebrities attend their parties and lunches because I mean, it's a status thing. Ill pull lore receipts later. Point: Hollywood knows about this.

This is for everyone in the supposed Resistance or anywhere center to left out here today having a good time with Bill Maher's RACIST iteration of a young native girl's name to dunk on trump.
Pull up those chairs because I got something to say.
If your response to someone suggesting not participating in that hashtag is
"Oh we're just joking - no big deal."
"Nah you're being too sensitive, We don't mean anything by it."
"But we're making fun of trump so it's okay."
"I don't see anything wrong with it."
In any way pushing back against someone telling you that hashtag is RACIST AF -
I know two things about you:
1) You follow no one on #NativeTwitter, and
2) You're racist.

1) #NativeTwitter As someone who is Native and close to being done with a PhD in history, can we have a conversation about the damage historians have done to Native communities? #HATM #twitterstorians
2) As Noenoe Silva points out in Aloha Betrayed, it’s possible to get a PhD focusing on Native history without interacting with ACTUAL Native people.
3) My first day in the program, a fellow student studying Native history told me he was excited to meet me because I was the first actual Native he met. It never occurred to him that maybe he should interact with the actual people he was studying.

Hi @BernieSanders. 🙋🏻‍♀️ I'm Rebecca Nagle. I am a citizen of Cherokee Nation. I am also the subject of the third (and longest) paragraph of your angry letter to @amprog. And... I voted for you in 2016.…
Since I have spoken out against @ewarren, I've been called a Russian bot, a right wing troll, and a tool of Trump. And now, I've been called a pawn of the Democratic establishment.

I am none of these things. I am Cherokee woman with a truth ppl on the Left don't want to hear.
In your letter, without acknowledging my existence, you describe my critique of Elizabeth Warren--a White woman who has falsely claimed to be Native American and Cherokee--as "unfairly targeting" her and an "echo of Trump's bad faith claims".

This is a #Thread about one of the many trolls who is targeting #Native and #Indigenous @Twitter accounts.

The account #@Blondi65003273 is interacting with #NativeAmericans by #JustAskingQuestions

Nothing obviously provocative.

One of Blondi’s followers is another account that claims to be #Native #Ojibwe
However, one of her first posts demonstrate her to be not your average concerned Wisconsin #Native from the North Woods. She posts a picture of a dismembered body that is supposed to convince voters that we need a stronger immigration policy to deter crime.

Thread: It's an issue so big, we have to try to make sure all our relations are aware. I don't know how many people are understanding truly what Trudeau's Indigenous Rights Framework is. ...2/

#NativeTwitter #Indigenous #cdnpoli
2/... This is what previous Indig leadership had been fighing against for decades. There are so many Chiefs signing onto this for their people. I don't understand how they can do this if they honestly understand what that paper means for all of their generations to follow. ...3/
3/...That Framework offers a lot of money today - big words about 'self-determination' and privatizing reserves for "self-generating revenue". That's community property now, as was once all of what's Canada now, what's now called "Crown lands". ...4/

1 - Has anyone ever seen a movie (not doc) that directly challenges the “white saviour” trope? Would love to see one, they must exist.

We have a character in our Grizzlies movie that attempts to be a white savour, but fails and is schooled by native youth.
2 - As Inuk producers @Aarluk and I worked really hard to portray this character in a way that felt real to us, having grown up with many of these white saviour type teachers. It was important to show that person for what they are. Then destroy that white fantasy.
3 - the idea that a young, inexperienced teacher can come in and save the little brown kids with a pep talk and tough love... is bullshit. As if we haven’t tried that ourselves. The reasons for our struggles are big and complicated and colonial.

As with #foreignaffairs policy that the US employs in the #MiddleEast,
#Trump domestic policy is to employ #Native Leaders who can advise him about accessing #Native land under the guise of cutting Commerce Dept regulations which would open up #Reservations to #BigOil Industry.
#Trump has set up a #NativeAmerican Affairs Coalition w/ 27 tribal members to advise him about the needs of Indian Country. The issue that concerns #Trump & the #native group the most is the desire to access the natural energy reserves on #Reservations.…
#Native #Reservations consist of 2% of US Territory but could possibly hold 20% of the country’s “oil and gas reserves.” (This makes wind and solar much more attractive considering you wouldn’t have to steal #native land all over again.)

Today, I want to share something with all of you. My family.
Here on twitter, especially never fails that we're in a constant state of struggle when it comes to colorism...who is more visible, who should be more visible, who is more native, who isn't enough native, who has more privilege, who doesn't have privilege.
It never ends and it breaks my heart. See in my family, my mom and I and now my nieces and nephews are more visibly Native...we're darker shades of brown. While my brothers and sister are white passing natives because our dad is white and his side of the family is white AF lol

Hey @TheAtlantic before publishing this “good White Christian couple wanted to save poor Indian child and the bad Native rights law won’t let them” article, did you pause and think maybe this is racist?

#NativeTwitter #DefendICWA @mthomps @najournalists…
I guess the fact checkers were on vacation. 🤷🏻‍♀️

ICWA has been challenged on these ground hundreds of times. And each time it’s been thrown out bc the law and precedent are clear. This isn’t uncharted legal territory.

Thread on being told we must policing our language skillz or it will cost us our voice.

A huge discussion broke out on the Idle No More OFFICIAL Facebook page today. An 'Ally' decided it was finally time to let us all know that after reading our comments on that page, ...2/ was time we heard that unless we start learning how to employ proper English most of our allies will simply, summarily dismiss our efforts. He really felt he was doing us a favor.

When he received the pushback he so earned, the number of other 'allies' on that page .../3
... who apparently feel the same way, chirped up in support & also advised us this was not racist in any way - just a fact of life. It was clear they honestly believed that, & they clung to conclusion despite some pretty clear education from those of us who are aware of ...4/

More than 100 Angelenos gathered Saturday morning to watch crews remove a bronze statue depicting Christopher Columbus. #NativeAmerican #NativeTwitter #IndigenousPeoplesDay
The historic record is clear that Christopher Columbus did not ‘discover’ America since he never reached the shores of North America & there were millions of Indigenous people already living here.
The genocide of indigenous people during the colonization of the Americas lasted centuries. Today, Columbus statues are regarded as signs of oppression.

Hello! It's that time of year, right before the holidays, during #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth when I share a list of gift ideas that support Indigenous people/organizations.

First, WHY support these organizations?
I'd love to tell you.
One of the best ways to fight destructive stereotypes of Native people is to recognize that we are still alive today, still creating, still working.

Instead of buying things about us or "inspired by us" (like Target pillows), buy directly from us. Support our work.
What better time to fight against those stereotypes than around Thanksgiving?

So here is a list of amazing ways you can put your money into Native communities and support Indigenous peoples and our important work.

Let's get started!

Hi #NativeTwitter & #twitterstorians!

Instead of essays, my #IndigenousHistory students are writing Wikipedia articles this term. It'd be great to create content people want.

What pre-1850 Indigenous person, event, or trend would you like to see a Wikipedia entry for?
Thank you so much for your ideas, suggestions, and pointers (for the ones already made and those that are still coming in)! I'm a bit overwhelmed but certainly delighted there has been so much interest, and I will definitely make sure to tweet students' work when it's complete.
I'm borrowing this idea from @JeremyJierong, who co-wrote with a student about their class' experience of writing Wikipedia entries. Helping students make their work mean something in the world is very appealing, and has lots of pedagogical potential.…

Okay, so here's the reality. Native people struggle financially, not all, but a good deal of us. We have jobs, own business, go to school, have families, have disabilities and needs that just aren't being met because of the unpredictability of life.
Last year, I was happy because I had done it. I had broken the cycle of poverty, i was finally making money from my work, bills were paid, i had everything I needed and I was happy because I was also able to give back financially as well.
Then September of last year, I went from being happy and secure to being homeless, to losing everything.....except myself, a suitcase and two dufflebags of clothing.

The First Nations Wildfire Evacuation partnership is very excited to release this summary infographic of our research results from a 6 year research project with over 200 participants! #Wildfire #Canada #Evacuation #nativetwitter
8. Provide culturally appropriate support and services - Indigenous peoples require different types of support and services during evacuations due to cultural differences.
Many First Nations have a relatively young population compared to the general population, meaning there are more children and parents that require support and care during evacuations. Activities help entertain children and provide parents down-time.
