Write this down: “The purpose of daily rounds & presentation (& progress note) is to *document the behavior of the disease under observation and treatment*.” This is the paramount philosophical purpose. You can include superfluous and redundant boilerplate (eg RRR no MGR no CCE)
But your presentation MUST contain all the data from the patient/exam/labs etc which allow an assessment (explicit or intuitive) of whether the patient is getting better or worse or not progressing, whether the expected is happening or not, & whether there r unexpected findings
Ideally, these rspecific to the pt & the disease rather than routine claptrap; if your patient has #complicatedPPE, the output of the chest tube will have a central position in the presentation; if it’s asthma, wheezing, RR, acc mm use. Tailor ur assessment to the disease….

Happy 130th Birthday to us!

The TTFNC was founded on July 10th 1891 in order to: “...give pleasure to its members by observation of animal, insect and plant life in Trinidad”.

This thread will revisit some key milestones in our long history! 1/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
In 1892, the first issue of our peer-reviewed journal was published as an outlet for our members to publish interesting and novel #NaturalHistory observations. It continues to this day as "Living World, the Journal of the TTFNC". ttfnc.org/livingworld/in… 2/n #130yearsofTTFNC Image
The first issue of our journal included J. E. Tanner's breakthrough discovery that #leafcutter #ants (locally known as #bachacs) cultivate fungus & feed it to their larvae, rather than eating the leaves directly as previously thought. 🐜🌿🍄3/n #130yearsofTTFNC ImageImage

Today, on #TheMisplacedMenagerie -

We report the exotic (for #India) apple #snail, #Pomacea diffusa, also known as the spike topped apple snail, from the #Mumbai region, as part of our ongoing studies on #urbanwildlife, and the #ecology of introduced species, in #India, Mumbai.
The study was officially published in the 'ELA Journal of Forestry and Wildlife' - a peer reviewed #science journal, which is also the official journal of the #Maharashtra State #Forest Department.

Spiked Topped Apple Snails in #Mumbai (and other parts of #India) are the direct result of the #aquarium trade - either as accidental, or deliberate releases from home aquaria.

The Painted Turtle is one of the most well-studied turtles in the world. What's left to learn? This is a thread about their unexpected love life...

researchgate.net/publication/34…

Now published "Sex, shells, and weaponry", the final research paper from MSc project of Patrick Moldowan Image
This project took shape from field observations: Ever noticed that Painted Turtles have a "buck-toothed" beak? Why? And why are these "teeth" more variable in size and often larger in males compared to females?

@jr4science + Matt Keevil were instrumental in idea development! Image
These turtle "teeth" are called #tomiodonts and it turns out that turtles can have one (monocupsid), or two (bicuspid), or three (tricuspid), or none at all!

Learn more about these curious structures here:

... but why? Do they have a function? Image

When our kids are all grown up, we hope one day they will tell their own children about the beautiful woodland in their neighbourhood and how the community came together to save it #WestbrookWoodland #villagegreen @WeLoveBath @MoreTreesBANES @waspschool @WestonLitter THREAD Image
The woods are a magical place, with a brook running through it. The dappled sunlight shines through the trees and glints off the clear water @Uhperry #WestbrookWoodland #Bath Image
Kids would paddle in the brook and some would use rope-swings to bravely cross it. Some kids were so daring they would jump straight across, taking a deep breath before they leapt from one bank to the other. @BathPlayProject #WestbrookWoodland Image

A group of #Mumbai's eminent citizens- Dr. Bhau Daji Lad, #DavidSassoon, #JamsetjeeJeejeebhoy, and Sir #GeorgeBirdwood, later curator of the #BDLMuseum, decided to establish a botanical garden and a museum to study the #flora, #fauna and #culture of the Bombay Presidency.

Trying to achieve “herd immunity” to #COVID19 through infection rather than a vaccine is a very bad idea. This is not only because health services will be overwhelmed, leading to a rise in all cause mortality, but also because we don’t know the natural history of this disease 1/4
If natural immunity is low or short-lived, re-infection rates could be high. There’s also the possibility of long term, difficult to treat complications after recovery from #COVID19 such as pulmonary fibrosis, pulmonary hypertension, & cardiac failure. #naturalhistory 2/4
The bottom line is that we need to shut this down as quickly as possible and for as long as possible, until we get a successful vaccine. This means harsh measures at first, which are economically damaging, but future measures to deal with wave 2 and 3 could be less harsh 3/4
