Buckle up for a thread about #PoetryBooks, #bookshops, #booksellers, poetry presses, & how they find each other. Like many poetry lovers, I'm disappointed by the lack of range of poetry books stocked in most bookshops I go in. We all know that shelf - one shelf, mostly faber.
For years I assumed 1 of 2 things: booksellers didn't read poetry, and/or booksellers adhered to the old maxim the poetry doesn't sell. Ofc, it won't sell if you don't have it on the shelves, so that's a self-fulfilling prophecy. #PoetryBooks #Bookshops #Bookselling #Poetry
For Background: I live with a bookseller and reviewer. I'm not a bookseller but I've done event bookselling. The bookseller reads a lot of poetry and the already decent poetry shelves of @SReadBooks have flourished in the 10 yrs he's worked there. #PoetryBooks #Bookselling

Today's new book is "The Apostle and the Empire" by @ChristophHeilig in which he re-enters the debate about whether Paul is critical of empire.

I am not a Paul specialist so suspect others will have much more well-informed opinions, but I found it helpful for getting a sense of the ongoing debate. He engages Wright, Barclay, and newer voices like @LauraRbnsn

The strength for me was the exegetical part on 2 Cor 2:14 where Heilig masterfully puts material and wider literary sources into conversation with the text.

I hope @LZarnow's new biography of Jewish American feminist-socialist leader Bella Abzug becomes an opportunity for more people to re-visit her.

I will never understand why such a key figure is not better known to the leftists and feminists of my generation.
An excellent review in @nybooks : nybooks.com/articles/2020/…

Saʾed Atshan's groundbreaking "Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique" is a fearless study of the ups and downs of Queer Palestinian solidarity movement and its double facing of occupation and homophobic repression.
Among other things, Atshan is unscathing in his critique of who he terms 'radical purists' and academics such as Jasbir Puar and Joseph Massad and their "debilitating effects [on] the Queer Palestine movement..."
He takes them to task for having barred the movement from "the possibility for academics and activists to formulate a new mode of scholarly engagement aimed at supporting queer social movements in Palestine and across the Middle East."

A week out from publication of The Brink, about NATO’s almost-accidental war with the USSR in 1983. Up at 3am to do East Coast radio interviews. @WICN905 is first! No shame here in asking you fine people to buy the book. It’s a bracing read and it’s relevant. #newbooks #nato
The reviews have been humbling. The book shows how Reagan figured out how to handle the Soviets without compromising his principles, how spies telling truths saved the day, how intelligence and diplomacy mattered and why we must pay urgent attention (even today) to nuke cmd/ctrl
There are similarities between Reagan and @realDonaldTrump - and significant differences, too. Reagan prepared, hard, and continuously and ceaselessly (if imperfectly executed) sought to understand what the USSR truly feared and needed from arms control agreements.
