This department is certainly cranking up its social media campaign in support of Home Secretary’s so-called #NewPlanForImmigration as set out in her #NationalityAndBordersBill.

But why would anyone be taken in by any of this? 1/7
It was August 2020, when Home Secretary announced she would make crossing Channel by boat to seek asylum “unviable”.

20 months later, as she was warned, her policies have only sustained the very conditions that lead to these journeys. 2/7

Last August, she hinted that a “Warm Welcome” for Afghan refugees might be expanded to double the number being provided for.

And yet, after over 7 months, that welcome remains to be fulfilled even for people who had by then been emergency evacuated. 3/7

Yesterday in #PMQs @BorisJohnson claims that the UK has done more than anyone else in Europe to support refugees & that the measures to support Ukrainian refugees fleeing the Russian invasion are very generous, both statements are very far from the truth. 1/

@BorisJohnson Let's start with what @BorisJohnson actually said responding to the excellent questions by @Ianblackford_MP & @LSRPlaid. 2/

'Since 2015 the UK is the country in Europe that has taken more #refugees' says @BorisJohnson, let's #FactCheck this. The graph below is based on Eurostat, Home Office and BAMF data.

"most Ukrainians will want to stay in Ukraine, but if they leave they’ll want to be as close to their home country as possible in order to be able to come back in the future."
what a pile of cynical nonsense from @DominicRaab

theguardian.com/world/2022/mar…
1 - the EU is 4,422,773 km2, the distance between Kyiv and London is 2400 km, Kyiv to Madrid is 3700km
2- has @DominicRaab heard about Easyjet, Wizz, Ryanair? It is faster and cheaper to travel to London than many cities in neighbouring countries by train/car
3- if I was working in the UK and my elderly parents were in Ukraine now, all I would want is for them to join me in the safety of my home, NOT for them to stay in a refugee camp alone somewhere near the border of Ukraine

It isn't illegal to cross channel or seek asylum. Ironically for @pritipatel it is illegal to penalise asylum seekers for their manner of entry. While studying the Australian system did @ukhomeoffice miss part where some of those policies are illegal? 1/

The reality of @pritipatel's #NewPlanforImmigration is that it will increase the very issues which she claims she wants to solve. It doesn't tackle smugglers or traffickers. Quite the opposite. It creates a never ending supply for them of people with no chance of seeking help. 2/ Image
People aren't crossing the channel for fun. They are doing it because they have no other options left. As recognised in law, safety is fairly subjective and there are very good reasons why asylum, and it is only a small minority nonetheless, may not feel safe in EU countries. 3/

Thread: Despite the slightly misleading headline, asylum seekers are often seeking safety, shockingly, and don't have a specific destination in mind. For some, not all, countries like France aren't safe so they have to keep moving. 1/
thetimes.co.uk/article/88dc2f…
Having already fled unimaginable horror, asylum seekers can spend years seeking safety. A safety now being placed at risk by the government's #NewPlanforImmigration. A plan which also violates their right under international law not to be penalised for their manner of entry. 2/
There's no such thing as "first safe country". Never has been in international law. It just doesn't exist. It's a phrase used to by politicians and pundits to avoid meeting obligations under international refugee law, and basic humanity. 3/

Thread: As the @ukhomeoffice has taken it upon itself to hijack the #RefugeeWeek hashtag, it's important to remember that not only do resettlement places globally account for a tiny fraction of refugees, it is also not illegal to seek asylum. 1/
Patel is attempting to make a distinction between those who use resettlement routes and those who seek asylum by other means. There is no such distinction under international law though. A refugee is permitted to enter a country via any means necessary without being penalised. 2/
Patel's #NewPlanForImmigration sets in place penalties though. It automatically creates a two tier system, a system which directly contravenes international refugee law to which the UK is a signatory. It also ignores the myriad of reasons someone may become a refugee. 3/

live tweeting of any kind is definitely annoying but i'm currently reading through the @ukhomeoffice's new plan for immigration and i'm seriously tempted to tweet some of its choicest phraseology.

alright, i'm gonna do it.

you can't stop me.

#NewPlanForImmigration
okay, we're starting with a real corker.

Global Britain, capital-G capital-B. this is used conspicuously in contrast to the EU, which is interesting. has profoundly colonialist overtones. overall, very negative vibes. 2/10
i don't wanna say i did a spit take at the next one...

'this Government will address that challenge for the first time in over two decades'.

waiting for someone to remind this Government that they've been in power for over half that time. loses points for short memory. 4/10
