As some of us celebrate the #Soviet victory over Nazism, let us remember the filthy role of the Canadian state, before, during and after #WWII. Prime Minister King, a vicious anti-Semite, was the most pro-appeasement leader in the British Empire, and was fond of Hitler Image
The Canadian state's interest in WWII was to use the war to whip up #nationalism and stamp out #socialist organizing at home, and to defend British #imperialism abroad. The Canadian state was happy to take on a founder of the Nazi Party, Otto #Strasser, as a political advisor. Image
Strasser's plan was to stage a #coup, so that the #Allies could cut a deal with the 'good Nazis.' But Strasser was a fraud, and only reluctantly, when no 'good Nazis' could be found to cut a deal with, did the Allies invade. The cream of the Nazi army was defeated by the #Soviets Image

Today was the first day I took some time to wander around #PortauxBasques #Newfoundland after #HurricaneFiona and it really hurt. I’m not talking about my feet or my back. I mean my emotional and mental state.
Went to J.T. Cheeseman Provincial Park first. There was a couple honeymooning in their little red hatchback with a quiet, pure white husky tethered to a zip line. They were easily 200 - 300 feet inland from where the parking lot used to be.
There used to be a sand dune between the parking lot and the ocean. You’d climb from the lot, cross the ATV trail and get to the beach. Old railroad tiles - cause Newfoundland used to have trains - were visible to the right, just a foot or two poking out of the sand. Now?

Premier Furey and MHA @Andrew_Parsons1 have been attempting to get here most of the day but quite frankly they’d need to invent teleportation to accomplish it. There’s no getting through the Wreckhouse. Our understanding is the Premier was on a flight overseas but turned back.
Our connectivity challenges continue. Cousin Sharon’s roof has sprung multiple leaks. It’s a new roof. #nlwx #hurricanFiona #PortauxBasques #Newfoundland
Even if the politicians and outside assistance scramble, there can be no response until the winds abate further and the Trans Canada near the Wreckhouse becomes passable.

20 years ago today we were on a Continental Airways (now @United) flight from Manchester to New York. It was for our first gig there for 4 years, to launch our 2nd Album, and we had a lot lined up. We were an hour off landing when the plane was diverted to a small town 1/
..in Newfoundland, called Stephenville. Stephenville had an old military runway big enough for passenger jets, so we landed with another 7 planes. We’d been in the air for about 6 hours. There was no infrastructure to deal with passengers,so we all had to stay on the plane for 2/
…another 17 hours while customs and extra police were brought in.When we got off the plane, the setup was amazing. It was 4am local time, and the local college (@CNA_News) had organised catering students to make food for everyone. We then all got a blanket, toothbrush, soap 3/

Meanwhile in #France,
"the peak of this second wave is over"

(according to the President in his Adress to the Nation):
Wait... "the peak is over" doesn´t mean "it´s back to normal"!

Confinement will only fall on December 15,
if there´s less than 5.000 new cases a day.
(today it´s ~9.000).

France is disappointed.🙁

Although they certainly can make it happen.
Meanwhile in #Switzerland:
(excess mortality of the second wave is significant)

Good news: fastest decrease in infections happens in the worst hit areas now.

For each #Province and #Territory in #Canada, here is the help that was offered to those living with #disabilities. This will include the #Federal help offered as well as any hoops #PWDs may have needed to jump through to get it and whether CERB was clawed back or not.
This is based on my own research, and if anyone sees anything I missed or may have gotten wrong please let me know.
Let's start with #Yukon
According to several articles, eligible families on #disability supports we're to get up to $400 to help with costs until August. Unknown what eligibility was.
#CERB was exempt from clawbacks.

#SydneyMines played a key role in #NovaScotia’s coal mining and industrial history.
Here's the story...
#nspoli #cbpoli #CapeBreton #nshistory @HomeMattersCB @JaimeBattiste @CBRMGov @AllanMacMaster @KCoombesMLA #coal ImageImageImage
#SydneyMines was named after Thomas Townshend (1733-1800), First Viscount Sydney, who was British Home Secretary in the Pitt Government in the 1780s. He was an important player in negotiating the Canada-US border.
#nspoli #cbpoli #CapeBreton #novascotia #nshistory Image
He felt the British needed to keep Canada so loyalists – Americans who supported the British side in the US War of Independence - would have a safe haven to go to after the war.

This was the #AtlanticBubble 500 million years ago – underwater! In fact, Nova Scotia wasn’t even land back then. It was sand, silt and mud at the bottom of an ocean.
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton #novascotia #AtlanticBubble @NS_Museum @NS_Energy_Mines ImageImage
It wasn’t until continents collided 400 million years ago that these sediments were lithified (turned into rock) , squeezed, folded and thrusted up into mountains – eventually becoming the province we know today.
#nspoli #cbpoli #capebreton #novascotia #atlanticbubble Image
You can see the west coast of modern #Newfoundland and northern #NewBrunswick outlined on this map but all of #Atlantic was off the coast of the continent Laurentia which hosted most of North America.

As #COVID19 cases are found to spread, #Melbourne (city of ~5 million) tries to contain them by going into #Lockdown.
(The interview features the idea of a dedicated #Quarantine building - that would actually help, I guess)...
"People acting as if the pandemic was over was 'not the answer, it is part of the problem' ".

"The virus had leaked from postcodes already under the stay-at-home orders to other parts of #Melbourne."
(and beyond, it is feared).
Due to #Melbourne's outbreak, neighbouring South Australia is about to completely close it's borders to #Victoria.

(Nearly) no exceptions. And those essential few who are allowed in, will have to wear facemasks the entire time...

Few years ago, I was offered a scoop of an ice cream named “#ColonialStreet” at @NLChocolateCo

Which #bipoc wants to PAY for a taste of THAT when they can have it for free?

Same ppl who said to me then “what’s the big deal?” now supporting removal of racist elements

I see you
After learning that their ice creams are named after streets in #newfoundland , I filled out a survey asking @NLChocolateCo, “Why would you want to commemorate #colonialism by naming an ice cream flavour after it?”

I never heard back
For those asking why it was “such a big deal to me”

It was one of the many reminders that I didn’t “belong” in the city of #StJohns, #newfoundland & in #Canada. In that moment, I wished to go back to my homeland, India.

I had to make a bit of a tweak to the rolling average plot for cases. #Newfoundland has gone 7 days without a new reported case, making its weekly average 0, which is a no-no for log scales.
Thus, all weekly averages of 1 case per day or fewer are now plotted at log(1) = 0 with the label "≤1".

Mines in #CapeBreton towns like #Donkin, #GlaceBay and #SydneyMines all mined the same huge coalfield (named for #Sydney) which extends from #CapeMorien-#CapeDauphin and 300 kms offshore.

#nspoli #cbpoli #novascotia @GeoffMacLellan @HomeMattersCB @AllanMacMaster @kendrachristin3 ImageImage
98% of the #Sydney Coalfield is underwater – it extends almost to the south coast of #Newfoundland.
There have been about 100 mines in it and it has produced more #coal than all other #NovaScotia coalfields combined.

The Princess Colliery in #SydneyMines was the first to mine undersea #coal in the #Sydney Coalfield. Its main shaft was near the shore and the workings were entirely under the ocean.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were asked about the red soil and sand at #CabotsLanding Provincial Park in #CapeBreton. Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #CapeBretonHighlands #CB #NS ImageImage
Sand and soil are eroded rock. Red sand and soil, like at #CabotsLanding, eroded from rock with significant iron content. Iron oxidizes/rusts when exposed to air, so the red is rusted iron.

#nspoli #cbpoli #NovaScotia #Capebreton #CB #NS ImageImage
The sand, soil and clay at #CabotsLanding are glacial outwash - sediments deposited by glaciers as they melted at the end of the last ice age 10,000 years ago. Much of the sediment is eroded from the #CapeBreton Highlands, which used to be much bigger.

We love getting questions about #mining, #minerals and #geology! We were recently asked about the #ScotchLake #Quarry in #CapeBreton (aka the #GeorgesRiver Quarry). Here’s our answer:

#nspoli #NovaScotia #NS #cb Image
This dolomite #quarry operated from 1899-1951 and was owned by the Dominion Iron and Steel Company (acronym: DISCO!). The #mineral dolomite has many uses, including for acid neutralization in the chemical industry, in stream restoration projects and as a soil conditioner.
#nspoli Image
DISCO made steel with #CapeBreton #coal and #iron from #Newfoundland in #Sydney's #WhitneyPier neighbourhood (named for Henry Melville Whitney, DISCO's president). #Steel is iron and carbon, and the carbon is derived from coal.

We often tout #NovaScotia's amazing #geology but all four #Atlantic provinces have great geological sights - partly because we were all connected in supercontinent #Pangea 200-300 million years ago! We're going to talk about some spots in #NL, #NB and #PEI this weekend.
#nspoli Image
This is #AtlanticCanada 10,000 years ago. #PEI was still connected to the mainland - no #ConfederationBridge needed! Sea levels are lower during ice ages because so much water is frozen. It wasn't until 5000 years ago that rising sea levels made PEI an island.
#nspoli #NovaScotia Image
#Newfoundland's #BellIsland had iron mines from 1895-1966. The #NovaScotia Steel and Coal Co. helped open the first one. The iron was made into steel in #Sydney, #CapeBreton. Steel is iron and carbon (which is derived from coal) so #CB coal and #NL iron were a good match!
