Less than 12 hours after announcing a steep reduction in small savings interest rates, the government has scrapped the order, saying it was issued by oversight. #NirmalaSitharaman
newsbytesapp.com/news/business/…
The earlier order was to take effect from today and was slated to cover schemes like Public Provident Fund (PPF), Senior Citizen Savings, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, and Kisan Vikas Patra. Image
On the last day of the financial year, the government said that the interest rate on savings deposits has been slashed to 3.5% from 4% for 2021-22's first quarter. It would have hurt PPF depositors, senior citizens and helped corporate players, if implemented. Image

#EXCLUSIVE: Bankers may be working all 31 days of March with the government looking to double the loans doled out under the #PMSVANidhi scheme

@pabsgill Public sector banks are always anxious in March as the financial year draws to a close. It's not uncommon for the management to ask employees to pull a few extra hours at work. However, this year, some public sector bank employees may be working all 31 days of the month.
@pabsgill On the one hand, the Indian government has issued an order asking banks to double the disbursements given out under the #PMSVANidhi scheme. And, on the other, the banks have their own internal targets to meet when it comes to agricultural loans, #MSME credit and other aspects.

Budget 2021 thread

Overall impression: predictable (but clean), business as usual (sigh) budget with not many harmful actions and marginal stimulus. A good budget vis a vis the last however many, but not really a big "Budget of Hope."

1/
Tl;dr: hawkish, deficit mostly from revenue loss, decent increase in CapEx, good increase in health, good privatization, but increased tariffs/"Atmanirbhar" protectionism.

Multi-year programs and consequent implementation questions. "Atmanirbhar", "digital" said 20 times?

2/
1) on deficits/stimulus

FM says deficit was 9.8% GDP last year, again claims the RBI + liquidity support magic number of 13% GDP stimulus. But, ex post expenditure was 4.1 LC higher than budgeted at 34.5 LC. So, actual additional expenditure from pocket was almost 2.8% GDP?

#DiwaliStimulus: Highlights from Finance Minister @nsitharaman's press conference

By @iyer_sriram
The Indian government unveiled a fresh set of measures to battle the economic crisis worsened by the #COVID19 crisis.

#economy #NirmalaSitaraman
To back her argument, @nsitharaman cited the Moody's report, which said the contraction in gross domestic product (GDP), for financial year ending 2021, could be 8.1% as opposed to its previous estimate 9.6%.

Problem is the blind polarisation among the upper-crust - who refuse to see anything good in #Modi. Many had forwarded to me the clip of an MP criticising #PMCaresFund hailing her as the new start in parliamentarian. Same people not interested in #NirmalaSitharaman’s rebuttal.
2/n Similarly, not a word of condemnation for the pandemonium caused in #RajyaSabha (despite televised footage) by the opposition but all sympathies with suspended MPs protesting in the laws of Parliament House and lamenting the “death of democracy”. 3/n
3/n Same set of businessmen and industrialists who have been crying hoarse about labour reforms suddenly start talking like Trade Union leaders. Would love to see their reaction if the government withdraws the amendments in #LabourCodes 4/n

I don't know why People (incl RWs) blame #NirmalaSitharaman so much for Economic slowdown & mock her continuously.
IMO, it's the policy failures in the first term of Modi Govt which is responsible for slowdown & not #NirmalaSitharaman .
I will explain why.
(1/n)
Contrary to general perception of layman that #DeMonetisation & #GST are responsible for slowdown, I feel there are other policy failures more responsible -
1. Delayed Payments to Industry by Govt Depts & PSUs. When govt itself never follows payment discipline, how....
(2/n)
.. how can we expect Payment discipline in Private Sector? According to one estimate, Govt owed more than 5 lac cr to MSMEs alone. Nirmala had nudged Govt Depts for faster clearances last year. I don't know it's current status tbh.
