1/ What do memes, shitposting, #NO2X and “community” have to do with one another? Riffing on @spencernoon’s community thread from yesterday a little.
2/ If blockchains are network organization tools, one of the most important answers to “why decentralize” is to eliminate the distinction between network owners and network participants.
3/ When networks have owners who are separate from participants, at some point incentives diverge. In the case of network businesses like Amazon or Facebook, this manifests as higher fees or more data capture to satisfy shareholders. @Kjer called this the “Extraction Imperative”

2/ Let us not forget that reputation should be associated with the consequences of our actions. Erik and ShapeShift have earned the suspicion of people who care about #Bitcoin.
If 2X had succeeded (with Erik's help), BTC's core value would have been destroyed.

3/ Bitcoin survived because of a strong streak of corporate suspicion in its community. That suspicion is now trained on ShapeShift, which is clearly changing the nature of its business at the expense of the privacy of its users.
Even conceding that the intentions behind the NYA were noble, the refusal to add replay protection was reckless and hostile. #No2X
Forks can be the least coercive way to enforce rule changes when lacking unanimous consensus, but only if people are free to *not* follow it
That requires proper (opt-out) replay protection. Something the industry came together to demand with Bitcoin Unlimited, but forgot with S2X
