If passed, the #NoBanAct would limit U.S. immigration law so that no future president can single-handedly issue bans that bar immigrants based on their national origin or religion, as Trump did with the #MuslimBan.

At a time when the targeting of Black migrants is on display more than ever, we must take action to ensure that legislation is adopted that will protect our communities.

THREAD: Congress is voting on the #NoBanAct today in a chance to finally repeal the Muslim Ban. This is a historic moment - the first time a Muslim civil rights bill is being voted on.
"Today is historic, as the #NoBanAct is the first bill to pass the house that directly addresses Muslim civil rights. And we would not be here today without the courage of Muslims and allies across the country." @RepJayapal
From @RepJerryNadler of NY: “When the Trump administration introduced the first version of the [#MuslimBan], it was immediately apparent that it was unconstitutional, discriminatory, and morally reprehensive.”

The Trump Administration's implementation of the Muslim Ban is a dark moment in our history. It calls into question all Americans’ basic rights. It sets a standard that the president of the United States can target and discriminate against anyone, without consequences. #NoBanAct
But today, when we advance the #NoBanAct to the House Floor, the @HouseJudiciary Committee will send a strong message that America still believes in religious freedom & we will protect it.
@HouseJudiciary Of course, we would not be at this crucial point w/out the determination & courage of Muslims across the country, including @MuslimAdvocates, as well as allies like @RepJudyChu, & @RepMaxRose, who has worked closely w/me to push the #NoBanAct forward. Image

After Trump issued his first Muslim Ban, I rushed to @SeaTacAirport. What I found was total chaos & heartbreak as countless families suddenly found themselves rejected by America—simply based on religion—& unsure when they would be able to reunite w/loved ones & return home.
@SeaTacAirport The #NoBanAct repeals Trump's Muslim Ban & sends a clear message to Muslim Americans, Muslims around the world & all those who believe in religious freedom & liberty that the United States stands w/you as a land of fairness—where people are free to worship whomever they choose.
@SeaTacAirport The #NoBanAct would also ensure that no future president oversteps his or her power to enact bans that discriminate against individuals based on race, religion or country of origin.

This is yet another xenophobic attempt by this Administration to restrict legal immigration and close America’s doors to visitors and vulnerable people. on.wsj.com/2U9IRaW
As Vice Chair of the @HouseJudiciary Subcommittee on Immigration and Citizenship, and more importantly, as one of just 14 naturalized citizens in Congress, I will do everything in my power to resist the Muslim Ban and other discriminatory bans.
It is critically important that we will be marking up the NO BAN Act in the @HouseJudiciary Committee to end not just the Muslim Ban, but other xenophobic, anti-immigrant policies pushed by this Administration.

Trump administration just announced new immigration restrictions, just about 3 years after the #MuslimBan. It applies to: Myanmar, Nigeria, Tanzania, Kyrgyzstan, Eritrea, Sudan. Lots to unpack here, so keep reading.
4 out of 6 of these countries are in Africa. Trump has never wanted immigration from Africa, remember this remark about "shithole countries"? 4 of them are also majority Muslim, so there's def a pattern here.
The bulk of the restrictions apply to immigrant visas -- ppl from Nigeria, Myanmar, Kyrgyzstan & Eritrea who would mostly be coming to unite w family in the U.S. can't do that anymore. As we've said before, these bans operate as #familyseparation policies. thehill.com/opinion/immigr…

Today’s historic hearing on the Muslim ban matters. As someone who came here as a refugee from one of the Trump administration’s banned countries, I know how destructive this hateful policy is to people around the world who want to come to America for a better life.
Today, the families who can’t see their loved ones have some accountability. People around the world wondering if this is still the land where they have a shot at a better life, regardless of religion, will see that one party at least still believes in those values.
We will keep fighting until we have fully repealed the Muslim ban and put this hateful policy into the dustbin of history where it belongs. If your representative and senators haven’t co-sponsored the #NoBanAct, put pressure on them today by calling (202) 224-3121.
