The #OntEd system offer a HUGE variety of secondary courses & now we can add ASL and LSQ.

But you'll never be able to take any of those courses if @Sflecce go through with the billions in education cuts.

A brief🧵to explain why and how course offerings work.
The most important thing you have to understand is your local high school's obligation is to offer enough courses so that your child can graduate with a diploma.

Your local school are assigned a certain amount of Instructional Units (IU). Each unit represents a course.
Your school would have asked your child what courses they would like to take next year. That's taken into consideration, but the IUs will first be used to create compulsory courses like English, grade 9 math, etc.

The details here can become tricky.

This is problematic on so many levels that I need a thread to explain.

Background: I teach at a blended learning school. Many of our students work during school hrs so our flexible timetable allows for it.
I'm not necessarily opposed to students working in itself. There are many reasons why students need to work:

- Support their family
- Support themselves
- Extra spending cash

But it takes a particularly disciplined student to successfully balance work/school.
I say this b/c not many teens are good at it. They either overschedule themselves or their work does. Then they skip school or come to school too tired to learn.

At my school I'm always cautious when a student tells me they got a job. There's a chance they'll drop out of school.

This thread is a good reminder, and should be read by every educator, especially those of us in #OntEd #nocutstoeducation
Teachers need rest. Sick days, short term disability, and long term disability coverage. Health benefits including massage, chiropractic, podiatry, naturopathy, prescription drug coverage, and psychotherapy coverage.
They need prep periods that are uninterrupted time to prepare, photocopy, contact parents, mark, have meetings with admin or guidance, eat their lunch from 3 periods ago, pee, text their partner, read the news, drink a coffee.

Hey #OntEd and #OnPoli, can we talk? I see a lot of people wondering why we're striking, what's it all about, is it all about the money, and so on, especially with an all-in one-day strike next Friday. Once I'm done I'll say Ask Me Anything. Let's tackle that money one first.
No, it's not all about a raise. 2% is great, and would be about in line with cost-of-living, and that's a basic thing that every single person who earns a wage should get.
Government wants to give us 1% according to Bill 124. For me next year, this difference would amount to about $750 a year, or about a large coffee from Tim's a day.

Here's a thread for what teachers are asking for because I am sick of #lyingLecce and the PC hacks who put party before people:
Teachers want the ratio of classes to stay 22:1 with the flexibility for board needs as enrollment changes. For those saying they turned out fine and they had 34 kids in their classes - there will still be 34 kids in some classes. 22 is an average not a cap.
Teachers want e-learning to be an OPTION, not mandatory. Our students are not guinea pigs, and should not be test subjects for mandatory online learning, which is only done in the worst (literally last place in Ed) States south of our border. We want elearning to be taught by...
