Our comms officer & at-risk colleague @DavidHarvieUCU on Radio Leicester this morning: highlighting @uniofleicester's pretence that redundancy plans are about 'excellence'; the impact redundancies will have on students 1/

Targeted for redundancies include:
Library staff who help students access the resources they need to learn
Leicester Learning Institute experts who made online learning possible
Teachers, supervisors, personal tutors who've moved hell & high water to support students 2/
Radio Leicester said @NCanagarajah wasn't available, but a spokesperson wants "efforts to ensure continued dialogue" with @leicesterucu. We don't think there's been much dialogue thus far, since most of what we've said has been ignored 3/

Results of our ballot for industrial action to defend #LivesAndLivelihoods @uniofleicester - to defend the University itself!
We passed the legal threshold with turnout of 56.3%. Of those voting, 69.7% voted for strike action; 84.1% voted for action short of a strike Image
This is a remarkable success given the challenges of holding a ballot open for less than a fortnight that included a 4-day bank holiday wkend, in the middle of a pandemic. Thanks to @leicesterucu members for this incredible effort!

The message to @uniofleicester executive board is clear: @NCanagarajah your "shaping for excellence" redundancy plans must stop. You've ignored a tsunami of dissent & tried to intimidate staff into submission. None of this is normal!

This week's Q&A session with @NCanagarajah and the executive board of @uniofleicester was another cheerless event. A thread with a few reflections. (1/7)
1. The public reactions are framed as a PR problem: The public outcry is no problem at all. This was expected and is dealt with. No reflection about or dealing with the arguments of the protest letters etc. at all. (2/7)
2. Monitoring staff at social media channels? That’s not true. We are just tracking their activities and people report critical stuff to us. I confess this makes me shiver. (3/7)

2018-2020 was the most challenging time of my life (as detailed in the long thread below). Delighted that @NCanagarajah and his team deem it necessary to challenge my resilience just that little more in 2021 and ignore my contribution at such a difficult time. #NoOneIsRedundant
During this time I continued to give my all to my students and even came in one day I was feeling ill to see a student who had not been engaging, I was worried about losing them given their own mental health struggles. I know I contributed to this student graduating.
I carried out data collection in schools with the RA support of @CharliCampbell_ (one of our graduates who is now a PhD student at Loughborough on a related project) and a volunteer undergraduate who wanted to gain research experience. Tell me again my research is redundant.

@NCanagarajah has been at pains to "reassure" colleagues @uniofleicester that "only" 60 jobs will be lost. This is not true. Twice as many jobs - in terms of people who currently hold them - will be lost according to the current plans 1/
2/ Half as many insecure or short term jobs will then be created to fill the gaps... temporarily. @NCanagarajah speaks about "net" "full time equivalent (FTE)" posts lost. @leicesterucu speaks about PEOPLE. Twice as many people as the VC's figures quote stand to lose their jobs
3/ Everything about @uniofleicester plans for redundancies is dishonest. Entire swathes of staff in our library & leicester learning institute- without whom teaching couldn't have functioned during pandemic - are earmarked for dismissal

It's taken us a while to get our heads round what @uniofleicester's shaping for excellent redundancies plans might mean for @UoL_NPB (Dept of Neuroscience, Psychology and Behaviour) because, well... let's see 1/
2/ We've had qus re external consultant DataHE's projections of student recruitment figures throughout, but didn't expect to be asking how on earth substantial projected EXPANSION of Neuroscience and Psychology teaching is to be achieved through redundancies??? #NoOneIsRedundant
3/ Also, someone else might say it looks like they plan to eliminate entire research strands/groups based on their relationship to the buildings the uni doesn't want to reopen. We're not saying this, because the pre-change engagement process lacked transparency entirely
