Am staying out of the #ToryLeadershipElection, as it is down to members now, but some thoughts on this proposal to merge govt depts:

Any Minister will tell you that
- a good relationship with Treasury is key, so integration is attractive ... if you still get joined up govt.
There are good arguments that @DFID_UK + @foreignoffice could, + probably, should merge to create synergy of govt approach 2/

More important than physical co location is the attitude + cooperation of ministers + civil servants. If they work well together, without ego, then stuff happens. So while infrastructure + transport have synergy, but justice was rightly taken out of the home office by Blair 3/

I defy anyone to watch this video of @sajidjavid + not feel proud of our #UK + @Conservatives party - a place where #Aspiration + #SocialMobility are our watchwords + #opportunity is everything. Saj is a friend, although not my preferred choice 3/

@ODILeeds @TheDataCity From now on I'm going to be talking Lille (Métropole Européenne de Lille -- @MEL_Lille) which contains Roubaix, Tourcoing, and other similar cities and town.
The economic history (weaving, clothes, etc...) of Leeds and Lille are extremely similar. Their present too...

@ODILeeds @TheDataCity @MEL_Lille We don't have easily-comparable data at small scales. But Lille's region has performed almost identically to Yorkshire in recent decades. And Leeds City Region feels very much like Lille. But with the usual UK vs. France differences. imactivate.com/regionexplorer…

The question on everyone's lips with #brexit "was this really what you envisaged you were going to get"
Once again they say there was a very strong instruction to Parliament - the minority was a tiny percentage - this can't be seen as a strong instruction.
