Not only wasn't/ISN'T Carter Page a spy, an agent of the Russians - He cooperated with the FBI. ... why stop cooperating?

Carter Page was (UC-1) undercover FBI "poising as an energy consultant" in DOJ's Evgeny Buryakov conviction case.

Carter Page(Male-1) worked undercover for John Carlin & Preet Bharara in SDNY to bust Evgeny BURYAKOV a Russian Spy from 2013-March16 (month he joined Trump as an adviser

So how could same FBI & Assistant AG for National Security Carlin allege 6months later he was a Russian Spy?

As everyone applauds Republican Rep. Will Hurd tonight...

Remember, he's on the House Intelligence Committee. He's voted with Nunes and the GOP on each and every measure, including on their sham "Russia Investigation" findings and today's vote against subpoenaing the translator.
#FTR: We should applaud Republicans who break from Trump and their party.

At the same time, we should be aware of their actions, and how, even as recently as today, they contradict their words.

We must encourage them to take those words and turn them into concrete action.
We should welcome Rep. Hurd's words and encourage matching action.

I've feared we wouldn't see Republicans like Sen. Edward Brooke — the first (of many that followed) to break w/ the GOP and call for Nixon's resignation.

I hope those fears are unfounded.

Since 1996 under Gingrich, the GOP has been using loaded, accusatory language to create negative propaganda to debase ordinary words.
They weaponized neutral terms such as "liberal", "progressive", "socialist", "taxes", "welfare", "regulation" into emotional dog-whistles.
1/
The famous 1996 GOPAC Memo, which Gingrich and others in the GOP crafted to give that year's GOP candidates tools to propagandize their campaigns, is loaded with the negative terminology to label their opponents, and positive terms for themselves.
2/
informationclearinghouse.info/article4443.htm
The GOP, like Cambridge Analytica, deliberately avoids facts & logic.
They use emotional manipulation via propaganda to "switch off" voters' skepticism & critical thinking.
That's why they try to co-opt terms like "patriot", "freedom", and "rights".
This is not new.

1/ Let’s discuss the Schiff memo!
2/ The memo begins with the premise that the GOP HPSCI abused its powers in attacking the DOJ and FBI, and asserts that the legal criteria was met by the DOJ/FBI in obtaining the FISA warrant for Page.
3/ The Steele Dossier was not the basis in seeking the FISA warrant for Page, as it was tendered after the FISC court was petitioned to obtain that FISA warrant.

Trump’s refusal to release Democratic response to #NunesMemo makes a mockery of national security and common sense. nytimes.com/2018/02/09/us/…
This political ploy reveals the White House’s one-sided transparency. But the public sees through it - the #NunesMemo fell with a deafening thud.
Refusal to release Democratic response to #NunesMemo - evidence of obstruction of justice by Donald Trump happening in real time.

<THREAD> Why are some exaggerating/mistaking what the #GrassleyMemo says?

See this widely-shared thread below by @KimStrassel.

I wrote about the Grassley memo at length here: justsecurity.org/51956/dissecti…

I’ll raise specific points of disagreement with Strassel in this thread ... 1/
2. Strassel: “it confirms the Nunes memo and blows up the Schiff talking points”

FALSE: it undercuts #NunesMemo on 2 main claims: whether the FISA application relied on news story for corroboration and whether DOJ told court about political origins of Steele’ dossier.

I wrote:
3. Strassel: #GrassleyMemo “is confirmation that the FBI's FISA application relied on the dossier and a news article”

FALSE: In addition to what I wrote in #2 on the news article, top expert David Kris explains Nunes memo highly implausible on this issue:

☎️ Just a friendly reminder that the Obama admin #wiretapped over 20 reporters at the @AP including their personal phones and general lines. Have you forgotten that @CNN @MSNBC @abcnews @nytimes but surely his admin wouldn’t do that to @realDonaldTrump 🙄 #FISAMemo
How quickly we forget #MSM “sheer volume of records obtained” and “overboard collection” oddly @AP removed this letter from their site. #FISAMemo #DisclosuresTribunal #NunesMemo
It’s funny that #Brennan is so angry with #Nunes probably just because he misses having the power to lead the #WitchHunt on journalists that reported negatively on Obama. Didn’t @CNN just give him a job? 😂🤣 #NunesMemo #wikileaks

Did FBI violate Woods Procedures?
There are strict rules requiring each & every fact presented in an FBI request to electronically spy on a US citizen be extreme-vetted for accuracy & presented to the court only if verified.
@SharylAttkisson
Presentation of any such unverified material to the Federal Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) court to justify a wiretap would appear to violate crucial procedural rules, called "Woods Procedures," designed to protect U.S. citizens. @SharylAttkisson

Folks in my mentions are demanding I explain my response to the #NunesMemo, so:
The #FBI was investigating Clinton and Trump during the 2016 campaigns.
But while the FBI publicly revealed the investigation of HRC--more than once-- they never revealed investigation of Trump.
1/
If the FBI wanted to go after Trump, as is alleged in this ludicrous #NunesMemo, all that was needed was to reveal the investigation. But instead they kept it super, ultra secret--even to the press, as was made clear with this embarrassing header.

2/
It took a year and a half for the story to actually break of what happened--"coffee boy" #GeorgePapadopoulos exposed the connections.
The #SteeleDossier was never more than a side-trip on the road to indictments.
Pretending otherwise just isn't smart.

I have read the #NunesMemo and will now break it down, point by ridiculous point. 1. 2nd pp: "Page is a US Citizen who served as a volunteer to the Trump Campaign-"Nunes states this as a fact-this directly disputes what Trump says: Page was never involved in his campaign.
2. Nunes details HOW the FISA warrant was obtained/references the direct reasons justifying it despite never having read the FISA warrant and not providing the underlying intelligence to the public to determine if this assessment is correct-we're supposed to take his word for it.
3. Steel is a respected investigator, whose claims have been proven. The FBI has funded his work as well. To claim Steele was involved does not discredit the basis of the application. But we have no way to know what the true basis was, as this was not released w/ the #NunesMemo.

Kyle Cheney, Politico: THE MEMO reveals that the counterintelligence investigation of Trump's campaign was, in fact, launched by Peter Strzok as a result of the PAPADOPOULOS information -- not the dossier.

What should we make of the #NunesHoax? [THREAD]

#NunesMemo

h/t @Zac_Petkanas
The #NunesMemo confirms that the FBI's counterintelligence investigation began with Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos, not the #SteeleDossier. The Papadopoulos information triggered the opening of an FBI counterintelligence investigation in late July 2016
Despite talking points from right-wing media, the #NunesMemo does NOT say that the #SteeleDossier was the basis for the FISA warrant re: Carter Page.

Now that it's out I will provide my thoughts on #NunesMemo in this thread as I read it in real time.
Smart to lead off with Constitutional authority supporting this disclosure.
From the White House itself.

"@DevinNunes has not read the [FISA] warrant from which the memo is said to be drawn. Rather than do so himself, Nunes designated Trey Gowdy to be the Republican reader"

The same Trey Gowdy who just abruptly announced his retirement.
(h/t @AriMelber)
nytimes.com/2018/02/01/us/…
Gowdy: "There is a Russia investigation without the dossier. The dossier has nothing to do with the meeting in Trump Tower, with an email sent by Cambridge Analytica, with Papadopoulos' meeting in Great Britain. So there's going to be a Russia probe even without the dossier"
This is a devastating blow to the campaign, led by @seanhannity and @GreggJarrett at @FoxNews, to find some reason - any reason - to shut down the #TrumpRussia investigation as it draws closer to Trump. With yet another chip falling in Rick Gates, the clock is ticking.

I’ve seen the underlying Intelligence documents behind the #NunesMemo, and it is a distortion of the facts. Anyone can selectively pick documents out of a huge storyline and cook up a case. That doesn’t make it true.
This is not the way the United States government operates, and it is not the way members of the Intelligence Committees are supposed to act.
As a member of Congress, getting appointed to an Intelligence Committee is a very sobering proposition. You hear things that you have to keep secret, that you can’t share with anyone, because you know if you do reveal classified information, people can die.
