I was a hero.
I didn't feel like a hero, but Boris Johnson labelled nurses as heroes and so began the lie.
When the pandemic hit I was on bereavement leave. My husband had been killed in a motorcycle accident, leaving me to raise our 4 children alone. I have no other

living relatives, so when I say alone, I mean alone.
As soon as I saw what was happening in Italy, I signed straight back up to help.
I had 30 years experience of emergency medicine and I couldn't sit by and do nothing. I knew I was needed.

I sat my children down and had a very emotional discussion with them about my decision.
Naturally, they pleaded with me to change my mind. It opened the wounds left by the tragic way they'd lost their dad.
I assured them that I would be protected by PPE and

Dan is my friend. He is an overseas nurse in the UK from Kenya. He works in one of the Trusts where a strike is due next year by the @theRCN should the negotiations with @RishiSunak and his government hit another snag. I have just been on the phone with him and Dan is resigning
For context, this is a nurse the NHS has invested a few thousand pounds to train in various surgical specialties. But Dan has had enough. He has had another maddening shift today. He had 12 patients in the surgical assessment unit
His shift started at 7.30am. One patient had Necrotizing fascitis. Another had acute bowel obstruction. There was a ruptured appendix among other various surgical emergencies. He was supposed to care for 12 patients with only one nursing support worker who went home at midday

NEW: Nearly 2,000 staff were absent from work yesterday during the #NursesStrike across eight mental health trusts, according to NHS figures out this pm
Large mental health & community trust @Mersey_Care had most staff off overall with 644 absent due to strikes.

That figure also represents 21.7% of the trust's total number of qualified nursing full time equivalent staff (approx: 2,964 as of Sept 2022)
However, important to note the above % is a rough barometer of impact

Not all of the above would have been on shift, not all nurses will belong to RCN and membership varies by trust, plus, there may be some non-registered RCN members among those absent

If you've never zipped up body bags on a shift, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn.

If you've never watched a person suffocate to death from their own blood, you shouldn’t be deciding how much Ambulance crews earn

#FairPayforNursing #EnoughIsEnough #NHS
@theRCN and it's members will ensure patient safety throughout any strike action.

For many years patient safety has been at risk and Nurses pour in extra time and energy to try and minimise that risk, but it gets harder and harder and something has to change. @SouthEastRCN
Nursing pay has been rising below inflation for years meaning real term pay cuts. This correlates directly with less nurses staying in the job.

Nursing requires a degree to enter, and experience takes many years to gather. We have to retain and fairly pay experienced nurses

As a librarian, it's my job to help distinguish reliable & accurate sources of information & debunk misinformation (regardless of intent) & disinformation (intended to mislead). With the @theRCN members voting to strike, let’s look at some of the misleading information. A thread🧵
Nursing is a highly skilled graduate profession, not a vocation. It is risk-oriented & patient safety focused. There’s a lot of talk about nurses being paid on average £35,500. That figure is indeed an average; it takes into account the most highly specialised nurses & managers.
In Wales, newly qualified nurses start on band 5 at £27,055 & progress to £32,934 after 4 years, which is the highest salary they can receive, without applying for a new job at a Band 6. Here’s a link to the NHS pay bands 2022-23: bit.ly/3UvgMqN

On the #nursesstrike. I’ve spent most of the last 3 months in hospital with my 10 month old baby. Yes the doctors and surgeons have been exceptional, but my god the nurses…
Nurses working around the clock to give life saving medicines, meticulous measuring/monitoring to raise the alarm when problems arise, and just as importantly the arm squeeze to give comfort when it gets too much, the offer of a cup of tea, such important care and compassion
I wouldn’t wish my last few weeks on anyone, but if you do find yourself in my shoes, more than anything you’ll want to know that those nurses are OK. That they have decent pay and conditions, and are able to get decent rest without needing extra shifts just to make ends meet
