1/X Re that #NYTimes semi-whitewash (grey-wash?) for fascist symbols all over Ukraine's military, my old, old warnings (15 Feb 2022); and yes, for the squeamish "I-save-myself-for-CNN" types among you, published on DREAD RT... Image
2/X ... The pattern should be clear by now - a far-right [here: Azov] unit that has successfully nestled inside Ukraine’s military is having spectacular PR success in the West. And it was easy. Because, it seems, almost nobody cares. It is, ...
3/X ...after all, not hard at all to first notice an arm patch that pretty much screams “I have an SS past” (as it is meant to) and second do some elementary research about Azov. There is no secret about its ideology and politics. A very basic internet trawl will do. If you ...

Trump indicted

Donald Trump will be the first former U.S. president to face criminal charges. A grand jury in New York City voted to indict him for his role in paying hush money to a porn star during his 2016 presidential campaign, people with knowledge of the
matter told The Times.

Trump’s surrender is expected on Tuesday. He will face arraignment, at which point the specific charges will be unsealed.

At Mar-a-Lago, Trump and his aides were caught off guard by the timing, my colleague Maggie Haberman reports. They thought any such
action was still weeks away and might not occur. Trump has consistently denied all wrongdoing.

The development will shake up the 2024 presidential race, in which Trump is a candidate: It’s uncertain if an indictment would rally Republican voters to Trump’s side — or erode his

Amsterdam’s tourist crackdown

The next time a British man between 18 and 35 searches for something like “pub crawl Amsterdam,” he may see an ad that bluntly tells him to “stay away.” The Dutch capital is trying to deter young British men from “coming to Amsterdam for
a messy night.” Ads warn that they could incur fines, criminal records or permanent damage to their health.

The campaign is part of a broader crackdown on rowdy tourists. Last month, Amsterdam introduced rules that banned smoking marijuana on the streets of the red-light
district and that required businesses to close by 3 a.m., three hours earlier than previously allowed. Cafes and restaurants must also close earlier, by 2 a.m.

But the Dutch capital is also fighting its own reputation: The city is known for marijuana and legal prostitution.

A possible compromise in Israel

A day after Benjamin Netanyahu announced a delay in efforts to weaken Israel’s judiciary, his government and the opposition in Parliament began the first direct negotiations to reach a compromise since the plan was introduced.
Emotions subsided after weeks of unrest.

Four government negotiators and eight opposition counterparts held a meeting hosted by Israel’s figurehead president, Isaac Herzog. Participants said the meeting was mainly procedural. But it was the first face-to-face negotiation
between MPs from the two sides on a dispute that has divided Israeli society more bitterly than any in recent memory.

The U.S. ambassador to Israel said that President Biden would invite Netanyahu to Washington and grant him a long-sought meeting in the coming months. The Biden

Russia’s eastern push levels city

In Avdiivka, a town in eastern Ukraine where just a few hundred people remain, the shelling barely stops. Residents hide in basements, as the thud of Russian artillery reverberates every minute or two. The assault is part of Russia’s
effort to capture the area around Bakhmut.

Russian efforts to capture Avdiivka began over a year ago, but the attempt to take the areas near Donetsk, the Russian-held regional capital, has recently intensified. The months-long advance has been slow — Russia has yet to capture
any major towns — but devastating. It has killed tens of thousands and reduced places to ruins.

My colleagues visited Avdiivka just hours before the Ukrainian military declared it off-limits and found it a wasteland. The top official there called it

New York Times has declared that the Press Freedom in #India is on a declining spree. But the analysis isn’t theirs, but an Op-ed written by journalist & activist, Anuradha Bhasin Jamwal, Executive Editor of The Kashmir Times.

A Thread:
Ms. Bhasin has been a vocal critic of the Indian establishment for a while. She’s one of the ‘Brown Sepoys’ to set global anti-India discourse on #Kashmir . But she has her reasons: reasons that make her qualify as a ‘Brown Sepoy’.

Anuradha Bhasin is the daughter of late journalist Ved Bhasin, founder of the newspaper ‘The Kashmir Times’. Anuradha was living illegally in the house, the possession of which remained with her father from 1990s till his death in 2015.

Those of you still laboring under the illusion that Western democracies and their media are "free" need to wake up. Western states decide what can and cannot be talked about - not through forced censorship, but through ownership. (1/n) #ohiotrainderailment #OhioChernobyl A 🧵
The way it works is that politicians are elected via expensive election campaigns requiring huge corporate sponsorship. So they are beholden to big corporates for their survival. The same big corporates own the press. (2/n)
So the big corporates tell politicians (whom they own) what to do and they then tell the press (which they own) to run stories that support the things that the politicians do at their bidding. The system works smoothly and nobody is the wiser. (3/n)

Three days ago, I outlined the pre-programed steps that would lead to the delivery of F-16s to Ukraine. Step 1: Media report of "discussions"; Step 2: Government denial of such discussions and intentions; Step 3: Announcement that F-16s will be sent. #UkraineWar 1/
It has not taken long for my outline to be substantiated. Today, the #NYTimes writes: "If the usual script plays out, the Biden administration’s reluctance to provide the planes could be temporary, officials say." 2/
This means, the decision to send the fighters has been all but made. Nothing remains but the working out of the political details within NATO and the launching of the media propaganda campaign of lies to sell the decision to a skeptical public. 3/

This @NYT article, claiming without a shred of evidence that Russia is directing terrorist attacks in Western Europe, is aimed at conditioning public opinion for the direct deployment of US-NATO troops, air power and other military resources in the war. #UkraineRussiaWar 1/
The #NYTimes is reprising the role it played prior to the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, when it promoted the "weapons of mass destruction" lie and related Bush administration fabrications. NYT correspondent Judith Miller concocted claims about Iraq's plans for nuclear war. 2/
The Biden administration, having staked the prestige of US-led NATO on the defeat of Russia, now fears a collapse of Ukrainian forces, which have suffered massive casualties. Therefore, a new "Russian terrorism" narrative is being developed to justify a massive escalation. 3/3

That a federal jury in Manhattan needed only 90 minutes to rule in actor #KevinSpacey's favor exposes the non-existence of credible evidence supporting accuser Anthony Rapp's claim that he was sexually assaulted by Spacey 36 years ago. 1/
But Rapp's claims, first made in 2017 in the early days of the rapidly escalating #MeToo witch-hunt, were sufficient to destroy the career of one of the greatest contemporary American actors. The media, led by the #NYTimes, treated untested accusations as proof of guilt. 2/
Spacey's career was brought to an immediate end. He was removed from "House of Cards" and fired from his starring role in "All the Money in the World." The outcome of the trial has vindicated the principled stand taken by the WSWS against the witch-hunt. 3/

Is there any limit to the wretchedness of the #NYTimes? Each day brings new evidence that no such limit exists. The latest specimen is David Brooks' column, "The Triumph of the Ukrainian Idea." It glorifies rightwing Ukrainian nationalism as the liberal ideal. 1/
Brooks' hero, Volodymyr Zelensky, "is fighting not just for democracy but also for Ukraine - Ukrainian culture, Ukrainian land, the Ukrainian people and tongue. The symbol of this war is the Ukrainian flag, a nationalist symbol." Brooks is wallowing in the rhetoric of fascism. 2/
But it is not just a matter of rhetoric.Brooks argues that liberalism, if it is to survive, must embrace nationalist mythology. He writes that national unity cannot be maintained on the basis of reason: 3/

The sudden dismissal by #Zelensky of the head of #Ukraine's Security Services and the chief prosecutor amid the opening of treason investigations into 651 state officials clearly indicates a major crisis within the regime. 1/ #UkraineRussiaConflict
Contrary to claims that Ukraine is absolutely united in the continuation of the war, the massive purge - amid allegations of pro-Russian treason at the highest levels of the state - indicates that there is substantial opposition to the war, even within Zelensky's inner circle. 2/
The #NYTimes writes: "While Ukraine is largely united in its opposition to Russia’s invasion, its deep cultural and historical ties with Russia have translated, in parts of the country, to pockets of support for Moscow." 3/

The #NYTimes editorial - titled "The War in Ukraine is Getting Complicated, and America Isn't Ready" - indicates serious divisions within and between the White House and intelligence agencies over the course of NATO's war against Russia. 1/ #UkraineRussianWar

Macron defeats Le Pen

In the second-round runoff of France’s election, Emmanuel Macron, the president, triumphed over Marine Le Pen, his far-right challenger, with a lead of about 17 percent points. In a solemn address, Macron said it was a victory for
“a more independent France and a stronger Europe.”

During the campaign, Le Pen was hostile to NATO, the U.S. and the E.U., as well as to the fundamental values that hold that no French citizens should be discriminated against because they are Muslim.
Jean-Yves Le Drian, the foreign minister, said the result of the election reflected “the mobilisation of French people for the maintenance of their values and against a narrow vision of France.”

Le Pen, who conceded defeat, bitterly criticised the “brutal and violent methods”

Top U.S. officials meet Zelensky

In a trip shrouded in secrecy, Antony Blinken, the U.S. secretary of state, and Lloyd Austin, the defence secretary, made a wartime journey yesterday to Kyiv, where the president, Volodymyr Zelensky, urged them to provide more aid
in his nation’s battle against Russian invaders.
Congress has already approved $13.6 billion in emergency spending related to the invasion, including for weapons, military supplies and one of the largest infusions of U.S. foreign aid to any country in the past decade.
Last week, President Biden announced an additional $800 million in military aid, including equipment to help combat Russia’s new focus on seizing eastern Ukraine.

Russia yesterday redoubled its assault on the eastern port city of Mariupol, where a steel plant held by Ukrainian

Within weeks of the US invasion of Iraq in March 2003, it became clear that the claim that Saddam Hussein's had developed weapons of mass destruction -- the critical justification of the war -- was a lie that had been concocted by the Bush administration. 1/ #Propaganda Image
The #NYTimes, which had propagated the WMD lies, manufactured, ex post facto, another justification for the war. On April 25, 2003, it published a front page photo of a skull, which it claimed was of a political prisoner murdered by the Iraqi regime. 2/
Two days later, on April 27, Thomas L. Friedman wrote a column titled, "The Meaning of a Skull." He claimed that the discovery of the skull rendered the issue of WMDs irrelevant. 3/

If you believe that the West is about to embark on (another) clash of ‘good v evil’, on which the fate of the world depends, it’s likely because you assume what you read in papers like the NYT and WaPo is unbiased.

Problem is, it isn’t.

via @YouTube
There was once a great paper called the New York Times. It was the first to cover the huge story that the Vietnam War was ‘a lie’, and the US Govt knew it was a lie.

It’s editors and staff risked jail to bring people the truth.

Unfortunately it died.
Working for the New York Times was a journalist called Neil Sheehan. He spent ten years writing a book that won a Pulitzer.

It was called ‘A Bright Shining Lie’.

Can you guess what it was about?

Neil Sheehan would not be welcome at the Times today.

He’d be in jail.
