AFO wants to highlight two new papers in Ornithological Applications that review multiple ways in which the field of #Ornithology systemically excludes researchers & research from Latin America and the Caribbean, despite this region harboring the most bird species on Earth 1/9 Letícia Soares (one of the authors) with a Bahama Parrot. Signed by 128 ornithologists (including professional scientists, naturalists, park rangers and technicians) from 20 countries, the paper explains what the field might do to start addressing the problems identified. A major barrier to advancing ornithology, say the papers, 2/9
is the marginalization of researchers from the Global South, meaning Latin America, the Caribbean, Africa, and most of Asia. “Colonialism still has profound impacts in our society, whether people feel comfortable with that or not... 3/9

I’ve been privileged to work with #CitizenScience data in #ornithology for many years at @_BTO and @CornellBirds. I’ve seen some of the amazing opportunities and the tricky challenges that come with citizen science data.

1/15 #BOUasm22 #Sesh1 Image
#Ornithology has a long history of #CitizenScience, enabling us to calculate population status for birds over many decades. For example, @_BTO’s data for Herons goes back to 1928!

2/15 #BOUasm22 #Sesh1 Image
One of the most important #CitizenScience projects in the UK, the Breeding Bird Survey @BBS_birds has allowed us to monitor which bird populations are decreasing and increasing over time.

The second field season of #TrophiChange was completed a few weeks ago. Here's a thread of what I was doing.
#ornithology #SciComm #waders #shorebirds #fieldwork
I am interested in linking #whimbrel chick growth to their food resources. To do that, I started in May by finding as many nests as possible. More nests = more chicks. This season that meant 110 nests.
#ornithology #TrophiChange #waders #shorebirds #fieldwork
But nests of several other species were found and surveyed too, to record laying dates and hatching success, as part of our centre's long term monitoring of breeding #waders in #Iceland.
Here's a golden plover nest, that successfully hatched. #TrophiChange #fieldwork

Here is a list of 45 #birds, 22 #mammals, and 30 non-avian #reptiles that are CRITICALLY ENDANGERED due to feral or pet #cats
#invasivespecies #conservation #ornithology #BiodiversityCrisis
pnas.org/doi/pdf/10.107… Image
first off, I'd like to highlight that "feral #cats on islands are responsible for at least 14% global #bird, #mammal, and reptile extinctions and are the principal threat to almost 8% of critically endangered birds, mammals, and reptiles"
onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.11…
AND within our own lifetimes, North America has lost more than one in four of its birds. These are not all critically endangered now, but these trends are pointing to #extinction

Thank you and welcome – a wonderful honour to give this #BOU2022 #AlfredNewtonLecture talk. A sight for a curious naturalist: why is this warbler apparently so silly? Or, how does the cuckoo get away with this?

#ornithology
2 #BOU2022

The talk celebrates Alfred Newton, founder of the BOU in 1858, the year of Darwin and Wallace’s papers proposing the theory of natural selection. Newton was an immediate early fan.

#ornithology
3 #BOU2022

Newton’s paper in 1869 suggested that egg-colour variation in different host-races of Common Cuckoos was a result of natural selection. He coined the term “gentes” (singular “gens”) for these host-races

Welcome to #BOU2022, Avian Reproduction, the BOU’s 2022 annual conference .

Our three-day conference is on Zoom and on Twitter and is a genuinely low carbon even.
By making #BOU2022 virtual we've also taken it global and have expanded the event way beyond the UK-dominated attendance of an in-person conference with this Zoom conference having nearly 2x the delegates, 36% of whom are from outside the UK.
And not only are all the #BOU2022 Zoom presentations summarised here on Twitter, but you will also enjoy some Twitter-only presentations that aren't being presented on Zoom during the breaks of the Zoom conference.

Our paper (with @LeaGrie) on the functions of #bird #odour is out in Biological Reviews doi.org/10.1111/brv.12…

Don’t have time to read the full paper just yet? Here’s a summary thread 🧵 [1/14]

Preen oil is produced by the uropygial gland and birds use it to maintain and waterproof their plumage. But could it have other functions? 🤔 [2/14]
Over the past 20 years, researchers have explored whether preen oil plays a role in chemical defence & communication. Despite this growth in research, many functions of preen oil remain poorly understood 🧐 [3/14]

¹Hello! Your friendly birder here introducing you to another cool grp of birds
MOUSEBIRDS!
¹Red-faced Mousebird
²Speckled Mousebird
This is 2 of the 3 in southern Africa
Like their name, they have cool similarities with mice. They hang out in grps clamoring on trees like mice..
²they are grey with long tails, a crest and short legs adapted for tree crawling. If you watch them on trees, get do look like mice🐀
There are 6 spp of Mousebird & all are confined to Africa. They are evolutionary distinct & special (someone can add here)
³they eat a wide variety but mostly fruit. They like to huddle together to keep warm. From time to time, you can see them on tree tops seemingly basking in the sun.
Cool fact: they bask in the sun with their bellies facing out to help with digestion...fermantative digestion 😉

New paper warns of catastrophic loss of EU's birds. Net loss of 600 million birds between 1980 to 2017

That's one out of every six birds

#ornithology 1/12
In fact, 900 million birds have been lost during that period, but this is set against an increase of around 340 million in some species

The eight species showing the largest declines make-up around two thirds of this total decline & the same is true for increasing species

2/12
The house sparrow has been worst hit, losing 50% of its population - 247 million birds.

Changes in agricultural policy and management have driven declines, however urban populations are also declining which may be linked to food shortage, avian malaria or air pollution

2. #BOUasm21 #BREAK1 New Zealand is a #seabird hotspot with >25% of global seabird species. 26 species (mainly Procellariformes) breed in the Hauraki Gulf. Our team researched seabird light attraction at 3 islands and 1 peninsula in the Hauraki Gulf💡🐦#ornithology #conservation
3. #BOUasm21 #BREAK1 We used 6 types of boat lights, measured the irradiance, shone them randomly into the night sky, and counted the number of #seabirds visiting the light💡Each light was shone individually for 10 minutes followed by a dark control period for seabirds to adjust

For the return of the #UNMBioblog after our year hiatus, I chose to write about the negative consequences for cats, humans, and #wildlife when we allow #cats to roam freely. I couldn't help myself with the punny title.
unm-bioblog.blogspot.com/2021/09/catast…
I was inspired to write this blog after I witnessed my neighbor's outdoor pet #cat killed a #bird under my feeder. A heated argument ensued. I know nothing has changed because I still scare him out of my backyard. I've counted 9 different cats in my backyard, here is one
I am a paradoxical #catlover, which stems from my #science & #ornithology career. I know how cute it is for my own #cat to frolic in flowers but I understand how dangerous it is for #cats, human #health, & #wildlife when cats roam #CatsOfTwitter #Caturday #catsofinstagram
