🚨NEW STUDY🚨

Recent analysis published in @naturesustainab “use #biogeochemical simulations to show that restoration of the marine ecosystems can lead to permanent #CO2Removal by driving #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement & atmosphere-to-ocean #CO2Fluxes.”

Key findings in a🧵⬇️
1/12 Image
Findings of this study suggest that “restoring mangroves, which are common in tropical shallow marine settings, will lead to notable local #OceanAlkalinityEnhancement across a wide range of scenarios.”
2/ Image
“The process is seagrass & mangroves influence the organic & inorganic cycling of C in sediment, with strong impacts on diffusive #alkalinity fluxes. In carbonate-rich sediment, seagrass & mangroves foster carbonate dissolution, resulting in increased alkalinity production...

Nature's financialisation lobby latest disingenuous narratives and tactics involve pushing governments to help create demand for #biodiversity #offset markets, and dropping the #offset claim in appearance only, in order to reduce legal liability: 1/11
uploads-ssl.webflow.com/623a362e6b1a3e…
The latest report from the taskforce on nature markets lobby group openly advocates for the "imposition of a nature / #biodiversity tax and trading system" as a "potential legal enablers for scaling biodiversity credit #markets." 2/11
"The proceeds from the tax could then be applied by the government to fund the purchase of biodiversity credits from projects in accordance with government priorities. This approach would serve as an incentive for corporates to reduce their negative impacts on nature... 3/11

The curious case of using offset values with data slice property 🤔 #Solana #Day8 #offset Image
dataSlice is used to literally slice 🔪 the returned data buffer.

Let's say you have a dataBuffer in which the first 8bytes are storing data you don't need. So, we can slice that from all the data and then carry out operations on the remaining data. Optimized much? 🤌
Now, the no. of bytes, to slice from the beginning, is defined as an 'offset' value inside of it.

Or

using offset value in dataSlice defines how much bytes to slice, in the returned buffer. Image

@MaxLenormand @Twitter oh but you can cc @MetaTreesNFT. Lets do the math:
- 1 tree planted = 1 NFT = 1 ETH transaction at avg footprint of 35 kWh/ 102.38 kg of CO2 (Dec 2021).
- 1 typical tree can absorb around 21-25 kilograms of carbon per year, but only once fully grown.
See the problem? Image
@MaxLenormand @Twitter @MetaTreesNFT The problem is much larger however as
1 The science of carbon removal through trees is complicated and sequestration depends on many different factors (soil, environment, tree species, micro and macro environmental conditions, etc)
@MaxLenormand @Twitter @MetaTreesNFT 2 Once planted only a small fraction of tree make it to old age where majority of sequestration potential lies: (depending on the species, but often) Following a soft power law (through wood, leafs, and soil) over a 100 year lifetime 1 tree can offset up to a tonne of carbon

BREAKING! The European Commission just confirmed that it promotes "like for like or better" #biodiversity #offsetting, as part of #NatureBasedSolutions!
Why is it major news? Thread 1/11
europarl.europa.eu/doceo/document…
Under this approach, the destruction of a habitat for flamingos in Spain could be considered to be offset by the restoration of a habitat for bats in Greece, as long as you claim that it is "better." 2/11
Beyond its obvious lack of environmental integrity, this approach will also enable the financialisation of biodiversity destruction through the creation of a related #offset market, and shift the conversation away from the need to curb destruction: 3/11

There's a carbon rush currently going on in the #Pacific. All sorts of shady characters are being drawn to countries such as #PNG in search of striking gold in the form of 'green' and 'blue' carbon offsets generated by the regions vast forests and oceans...🧵
The sudden demand for carbon credits appears to be at least partly due to the Australian government's continuing support for the gas industry, and the need for cheap carbon offsets to greenwash their image and claim #NetZero emissions.
The predatory behaviour of some #carbon #offset project developers in the Pacific is an inevitable consequence of countries and companies scrambling to buy cheap offsets instead of leaving fossil fuels in the ground or making real reductions in their carbon emissions.

This statement is wrong, misleading, and dangerous. A thread 1/
With offsets, one entity continues to emit while another is paid to do something nice for the climate. #Offsets don't stop emissions. Offsets are the opposite of reducing emissions. 2/
The author seems to confuse #offsets with #removals. Don't do this. Yes, removals in forests and fields and grasslands are important to staying below 1.5C. But these are not offsets.

As part of #Rafale deal,#Dassault investing around €100 million in JV with #RelianceDefence (RD),as part of Offset obligations, which is less than 3% of total #Offset obligations

RD,not getting US$20 billion or even US$4 billion as liar Rahul Gandhi claimed, but less than $120mn
Reliance Defence, was formed after purchase of #PipavavDefence, which was in business of building warships &other vessels for Indian navy for years

So Reliance Defence, not a new company,as alleged by #Congress troll #RahulGandhi&his foolhardy acolytes
#Rafale deal,completely clean
During earlier round of bidding for #MMRCA,under @INCIndia led #UPA govt,#Dassault tied up with Reliance Aerospace, which was newly formed company, without any experience in defence or aircraft business

So it is not @narendramodi govt but #Congress that has lot to explain

Pay brown people in the developing world to cook differently and you can relax in the knowledge that the #emissions from your private plane have been compensated.

The beauty of our globalised world is that forest carbon credits just keep getting cheaper.

theguardian.com/environment/20… Image
Perhaps your the cash you pay to #offset your emissions will be used to fund #cleancookstoves in Nepal. Perhaps these cookstoves will land in a village like this one.

Perhaps the company you pay won't do its home work, not even ask people if these stoves work for them.. ImageImageImage
This was just one place in which countless #cookstoves, brand new, had been discarded by the community.

#Offset projects have a very specific, abstract logic to them. Can you guarantee those logics will carry in diverse contexts, for decades to come? #negativeemissions ImageImage
