#TalDíaComoHoy de 1896 se inauguraron en Atenas los conocidos como Juegos de la I Olimpiada. Fueron organizados por el Comité Olímpico Internacional (COI) que había creado el aristócrata francés Pierre de Coubertin. Se celebraron hasta el 15 de abril.
Participaron 14 países y un total de 241 atletas (todos hombres). Los participantes eran todos europeos o vivían en Europa con la excepción del equipo de Estados Unidos. De hecho, más del 65% de los atletas que compitieron eran griegos.
Los ganadores del primer lugar recibieron una medalla de plata, una rama de olivo y un diploma. Los que ocuparon el segundo lugar recibieron una medalla de cobre, una rama de laurel y un diploma.
