Everyone at the Youth Services Bureau is very pleased today to welcome Mayor Mark Sutcliffe and all the City Councillors, new and returning, to this new term!
YSB serves youth, families, and caregivers from all across Ottawa. We've created a YSB thread just for you:

#OttCity
We thought you might find it interesting to know more about our bilingual services, and where our housing, mental health, justice, employment, and youth engagement sites are located. At the end weā€™ve included some detail about how to reach us and order materials.
We have supportive long-term housing apartment buildings in Ward 15 Kitchissippi, Ward 7 Bay, Ward 13 Rideau-Rockcliffe, and Ward 16 River. One of these buildings is dedicated to youth who identify as LGBTQ2S.

#Bill23 is a bad Bill that will make housing more unaffordable not less, destroy wetlands, takes away renters rights and exacerbates urban sprawl all while lining the pockets of developers.

And for those "housing advocates" that support this Bill, we see right through you. 1/7
Putting the blame squarely on cities for the lack of affordable housing is just plain wrong and a Conservative talking point to strip cities of their independence and download costs onto them just like Mike Harris did in the 90s-00s with transit services and amalgamation. 2/7
Are there bad NIMBY city councillors? Sure but the answer isn't to remove the few tools cities have to ensure sustainable development.

The real way to achieve more affordable housing would be to actually work with cities who also for the most part also want affordable homes! 3/7

1. When I did the timeline on Pat King's involvement in the #OttawaOccupation (link below) I didn't include a lot of what I had.

In retrospect there was a lot that I should have included, thus here are with Part II

2. And once again to set the mood and contradicting the "ah shucks, I'm really a nice guy" and "teddy bear" persona Pat has cultivated, here he is during a summer a few years back telling people he is not a nice person and saying he has a record the size of his arm.
3. Based on a redacted intel report during the occupation which is clearly Pat King, this admission might be one of the few things he has said about himself that is accurate.

1. So.

I just finished watching Pat King's testimony.

And it was... something.

Suffice to say I don't have time to deal with everything he said, but I thought I would put out a thread to provide context.
2. Let's get one thing out of the way right away.

In late 2021, Pat was prevented from boarding a flight due to his vax status. He was upset, hence the "catch a bullet" comment.

Since I would hate to take it out of context, her is the video he posted in it's entirety.
3. In early January he got wind of the planned convoy. Here on January 14 he talks about the Memorandum of Agreement that a faction of the participants was going to submit and suggested something would happen if the Senate rejected it.

1. As the Emergencies Act Inquiry continues we need to remember that most of the individuals who participated in the #OttawaOccupation and border blockades are still planning further actions.

And that includes a "convoy" planned for Lethbridge in support of the Coutts arrestees.
2. This week occupation organizers such as Tamara Lich and Pat King appear before the Emergencies Act Inquiry, however we have to remember the EA wasn't only enacted due to the situation in Ottawa but also because of the border blockades.

chatnewstoday.ca/2022/10/30/emeā€¦
3. Borders were shut down in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario. The most economically damaging was likely the closing down of the Ambassador bridge but the longest and perhaps most dangerous blockade was at the Coutts, AB border crossing.

1. If you are following me odds are that has been since January 29, 2022 when I started composing some epically long and frequently snarky threads on the "Freedom Convoy" which I often characterized as the #OttawaOccupation.
2. The occupation in Ottawa eventually inspired anti-vaxx/anti-mandate people to block border crossings in BC, Alberta, Manitoba, and Ontario, slowing and in some cases stopping international trade.
3. The convoy attracted a number of participants, many of whom subscribed to outlandish conspiracy theories, and a number of whom adhered to extremists ideologies.

Hey #Ottawa, youā€™ve probably heard that @cmckenney plans to build 25-years of bike infrastructure in their 4 year term. Thereā€™s been a lot of talk about where the $ will come from (and what it will mean for tax payers).

I looked into it.

Green bonds are a tool that governments can use to accelerate environmental or climate action projects.

They finance the upfront costs of projects that have long-term positive environmental (and social/economic) effects without siphoning money from other areas, like roads.
Green bonds are low-interest loans. Which means yes, debt. Wait, isn't $250M in debt a lot?

How this debt would be paid off:
1ļøāƒ£ Money saved on road wear-and-tear
2ļøāƒ£ Redirect $15M/year Ottawa already spends on cycling to pay off the loan

ā¤“ļø would make the project cost neutral.

The insinuation by the @_MarkSutcliffe campaign that we have "contributed to McKenney's campaign" in any way is not based on any fact or evidence and is being used to distract from real issues that matter to #Ottawa residents like accountability and transparency at City Hall. 1/5
When it comes to our over 700 members, they are free to do as they wish and support any of the candidates we have endorsed. In fact, we encourage our members to do so and encourage residents across #ottcity to join them too. 2/5
Voter turnout in #Ottawa for municipal elections is historically very low. Our hope is that by informing potential voters about candidates who share their vision and values, we can inspire more people to head to the polls this October. 3/5

We're happy to be out tabling at the #Kanata Mayoral debate tonight to talk to Kanata residents about our movement for a better #ottcity!

We'll also be livetweeting the Mayoral debate tonight so follow along with us in the thread below!
First up with opening statements are Param Singh, former police officer at OPS; former mayor Bob Chiarelli (who still reads his statements off the sheet after all these years); and Ade Olumide, who is focused on a police complaints bill of rights.
Two comments from Ade: ā€œIā€™m not sure why they put me next to the police officerā€¦ā€ and ā€œI would like to hear how Mark Sutcliffe is going to pay for his environmental plan.ā€

And next up is Sutcliffe - who is the first to stand up during his opening statement, which is something?

Today we are proud to announce that after a vote of our membership, Horizon Ottawa is endorsing @cmckenney to be the next Mayor of Ottawa.

Since becoming a councillor in 2014, Catherine has been one of the most consistently progressive voices at #ottcity Hall. 1/8
They've supported initiatives to push for more affordable housing, a city budget that prioritizes people over big corporate interests, and pushing for an inquiry into our LRT and showed true leadership during the #OttawaOccupation when many other politicians left us behind. 2/8
.@cmckenney was also the first to declare they would not be accepting donations from developers.

To our members, that signaled that the only constituency Catherine would be accountable to would be to residents of this city. 3/8

1/4 In the coming days, people who've been dehumanized & have dehumanized others are going to be rounded-up by the cops in #ottcity. There are children who may be separated from their parents right in front of their eyes or from afar by jail walls. Human beings may die.
2/4 This isn't a time for popcorn, champagne popping & celebration. This isn't a time for #CarceralEnjoyments. This is a time where we're bearing witness to harm in response to harm and we need to summon our better angels to resist our worst instincts.
3/4 It's critical that even in the most challenging times that we continue to imagine, strive for & try to build a future where solidarity is premised on equity, inclusion, collective responsibility, real safety, joy & liberation for all, not othering.

The mayor and incoming police board chair Eli El-Chantiry thanked Matt Torigian for not coming to Ottawa after all to be the interim police chief, and for his "extremely gracious handling of this difficult situation."

Kidā€™s school confirmed itā€™s closing tomorrow because they canā€™t guarantee the safety of children due to the anti-vaxx, white supremacists who are speeding through Centretown streets + screaming obscenities at residents. @OttawaPolice, time to run these extremists out of town.
These extremists have led to the closure of at least three vaccine clinics, several schools, the Rideau Centre and countless small businesses. Residents are shaken and afraid. I have lived in Ottawa since 2004 and NEVER seen anything like this.
Kids are having their rights violated by being denied school. White supremacy is marching in our streets, openly displaying the swastika and the Confederate flag. Workers at a homeless shelter are being harassed. LGBTQ residents had shit flung at their home.

A running tape of the incompetence of the Ottawa Police Services Board, led by mayoral candidate @dianedeans. #ottnews

2018: ā€œThe Board is confident that Uday reflects all of the necessary qualities to help lead one of the most respected police services in North America.ā€
2020: "I truly believe that the work this budget will support will bring at least some of the change we so urgently need," @DianeDeans said.

This is in addition to promising a funding freeze in the 2021 budget to #ottcity residents which she then renegged on. #ottnews
After giving @ottawapolice more money, the Ottawa Police Services Board, led by @dianedeans has created a monster.
2022: "The Ottawa Police Service is in need of a third deputy police chief because one of its current deputies has been suspended with pay for nearly one year."
