I've always found it disturbing when white people dismiss slavery by saying, I wasn't there, it was a long time ago. No, it wasn't that long ago. My mother, who grew up in the 50's, was babysat by her great-grandmother who had been enslaved. She still
carried the paranoia of every day life as a captive human. The dresses she sewed for herself had hidden pockets where, just in case, she could hide food or valuables. Not only did we inherit stories like this, but we inherit the stress as well.
