2/4. Today, another step has been implemented towards positive change. We welcome the Government of Ontario's commitment towards the City of #London's Anti-Hate Response Pilot project.
3/4. We also thank the London Muslim Mosque for partnering on this initiative, which is a needed step in the right direction. We can all do more in the current fight against hate.

Since the evening of June 6th, I have struggled to find the right words to express, on behalf of our city, the magnitude of what happened to the Afzaal family, #OurLondonFamily. #ldnont
One year later, I remain at a loss on how to properly communicate the depths of our anger, our sadness, and terror.

Make no mistake, words do matter. They can provide comfort, encouragement, and hope.
Ultimately, however, words are nowhere near as important, nor as impactful, as action — especially one year later.

Dear #LdnOnt,

A difficult truth is preferable to a palatable lie.

One year ago, a son of our city, sentenced #OurLondonFamily to death for the crime of being different. Singled out & marked for execution because they were deemed to be enemies in an invisible war.
Dear London, the difficult truth is that his was not an imported hate, but rather one grown in plain sight. A hate that took root & grew in a forest city. A hate we chose not to see because we preferred the ease of wilful blindness over the harsh reality of the difficult truth.
The difficult truth is that this evil man does not exist in isolation. There are many, too many, that walk amongst us who share his philosophy. We have all, at one time, witnessed someone partake in hate & we have all, at one time, failed to call it out.

🧵 It is crucial that everyone make the connections revealing themselves in Ottawa

The dogwhistles & outright support from politicians WILL turn deadly. If not this weekend, then in the future.

Racist political speech inspired the Quebec mosque terrorist,… 1/5
…the New Zealand mosque terrorist, the terrorist who murdered the Afzaal #OurLondonFamily this past summer

It is especially important right now, right here, that every single elected official, political party & leader - without exception - act to root out antisemitism… 2/5
…anti-Black racism, Islamophobia, transphobia, homophobia - all of it. We need, collectively, to insist on it.

And we CANNOT make excuses for those who would downplay the actions of people who acted in concert w white supremacism, in whatever form, in the past… 3/5

The heinous, hate-based and shocking attack on Sunday night shakes us to the core and is a reminder of how much we must continue to do to fight Islamophobia and white supremacy in Canada. #OurLondonFamily #StopIslamophobia
In our work on the impacts of anti-terrorism laws and policies, from the War on Terror, to security certificates, to profiling at the border, to surveillance in the community and on campuses, we see how systemic racism serves to continue the targeting of Muslim Canadians.

The mass murder in London is not an isolated incident. Western governments are deeply complicit in perpetuating Islamophobia in many ways, including participating in wars & occupations in the Middle East & demonizing and deporting refugees. #OurLondonFamily
In the 2000s the antiwar movement marched under the banner of War is Not the Answer, Islam is Not the Enemy, because the so-called War on Terror, as @wickdchiq has rightly pointed out, has really been a War on Muslims. Islamophobia and Western Imperialism go hand in hand.
The wars on Iraq and Afghanistan, the so-called Safe Third Country Agreement, gov't demonizing & surveillance of Muslim groups & organizers, Security Certificates, the list goes on. Gov't condolences & apologies aren't a replacement for changed policies. #OurLondonFamily

Today I ask that no one look away from the vile anti Muslim prejudice in our midst. I have lived in #LdnOnt for almost a decade and these are the kinds of messages I have received on an ongoing basis.
Love and courage is all we have to give back. Even in the face of the most vile murderous hate that we encounter. #OurLondonFamily
I have had so many family members ask me why I speak up. I speak up because my silence will not save me or my family. I speak up because I am deliberate and unafraid. And I will never stop speaking up against hatred. #LdnOnt #OurLondonFamily
