Our penultimate session of the #EYPlayParty is a chat on Outdoor Play with @MuddyTeachers, Anne-Marie Evans, Christina Pickles, hosted by @MsNursery.
Chat has absolutely taken off, with people saying hello from China, Egypt, Thailand, USA, Pakistan, Italy, Uzbekistan...and more. Image
First of all, Christina stresses on the importance of the adults getting in touch with how they feel about the outdoors themselves? Insects? Heat? Dirt? She flags that teaching outside requires HUGE flexibility, since you may not even have a window to throw your plan out of!
An urgent reminder: what did outdoor play look like for us? We fell down, stayed out till dinner time, climbed up trees, got dirty, etc...children today don't have that opportunity, and it's our job to bring it back for them, says @MuddyTeachers.

🧵Great interest in #OutdoorLearning in ON

It supports a positive dynamic btw health, wellbeing + education

My bias: also valuable for unparalleled air changes😉

Yet out-of-the-[school]-box models are more than desks outside (good start though!)

Let's see where #OutdoorLearning falls within the hierarchy of [infectious] hazard controls

Ventilation is usually considered an engineering control

But outdoor learning changes the way students and staff work, so one could argue it's an administrative control too

BENEFITS of #OutdoorLearning include:
1) higher ventilation
2) improved air quality
= better mental/physical health outcomes AND reduced infection risk

Evidence in table 👇🏾

Wow! What a fun filled & productive week #WorldBookDay #WorldBookDay2021 #outdoorlearning sessions @HighStPrimary this week with 8 groups using @yuvalzommer #bigbookofbugs as stimulus. An immense amount of work done out in the woodland by all groups. The focus was on Bug hunts
but we also used it as a fabulous opportunity to create a wonderful #bughotel and other habitats. An area has been roped off in anticipation of a wild flower meadow, a greet way to entice some pollinators to the woodland & some colour! Pupils put out some roof tiles that will be
numbered & monitored over the years, a bug hotel was created with every year group contributing, a butterfly cafe was created with pots planted with garden pollinator seeds, a caterpillar cafe was created by the Yr1/2, hedgehog houses built by some brilliant Yr5s, some

Corruptus incredibils. We need to be #remote we need flexibility and we need options for outdoor learning. But before all that delay the opening and hit pause !
Cancel all state tests. Grant waivers for this year again. This is not business as usual. #red4ednyc #healthjustice #nycschoolsdeserve
No each school wont be able to do the same thing. We have been screaming at the top of our lungs about inequities for decades already. But outdoor learning, field trips, service projects all should be on the table in @NYCSchools
