Is what UK farmers now face similar to what UK coal miners faced back in the 1980s? Some inexpert thoughts.

🧵
In the 80s coal mining was subsidised to the tune of £1 billion a year in 1980, or in today's money, about £5 billion. Not so different to the ~£3.3 billion received by farmers just a few years ago.

Without those subsidies a great number of pits and farms would fail to break even.

As a consummate Whitehall operator, Sue Gray's report shows a skilful civil servant can damn @BorisJohnson - even without having to directly criticise him.

My snap analysis:
inews.co.uk/opinion/sue-gr…
"The worry was that instead of the “full Gray” we would get the dull Gray..." But even the neutered version makes life difficult for the PM.
NB the word 'party' is mentioned just once in the entire 'partygate' report.
"You must not have a work Christmas lunch or party, where that is a primarily social activity and is
not otherwise permitted"

Will the PM to use that to pick the lock of the chains wrapped around him?

Learned something new watching #hospital which was about the amazing organ transplant work they do. It seems that Eu governments pay for their citizens to get specialist treatment in the UK, so putting money into the system and also sometimes supply organs for British patients.
There is also a reciprocal arrangement whereby British patients can be sent to the EU. These cooperative arrangements have averted premature deaths.
So after all that scaremongering that brexiters did about health tourism making Brits think they are being had by those forens, it seems in fact, the NHS - and therefore British patients and taxpayers - benefit in a very genuine way from overseas patients.

@PinkNews PinkNews were clearly too dim to realise that the man they attack here is one of their own authors! His several articles on PN contradict this hit-piece. How about "Activist instrumental in writing for Pink News linked to anti-abortion and anti-LGBT+ hate groups"? #OwnGoal /1
@PinkNews Gary Powell opposes ALL surrogacy for ALL people: not just for gay couples, as PN try to imply. He opposes surrogacy because it is harmful to poor women who are exploited by the wealthy who hire them out for their wombs. It is also harmful to babies. /2

@PinkNews Regarding the Lady Hale judgment: Gary supported the £580,000 award to the woman in damages. But he opposed the ADDITIONAL £560,000 award to her to have FOUR commercial surrogacy pregnancies in the USA. Commercial surrogacy is ILLEGAL in the UK. /3

1/ Kudos to @TheOnion for this hilariously deadpan parody of a @WSJopinion editorial on the minimum wage!
2/ Wait. What? No. You mean this isn't The Onion? Well then it must be a brilliant self-parody, right? I mean, @WSJopinion even includes the obligatory eye-rolling appeal to "Econ 101" in the lede!
3/ Also comically-classic @WSJopinion is how it consistently misrepresents the facts. In fact, the original UW study did not find hours or wages fell. Rather, it speculated that hours & wages rose slower than they did in the alternative history of a fictional "Synthetic Seattle."

BREAKING - Likely #Israel airstrikes just hit a scientific research center - reportedly linked to the SSRC - in #Latakia.

#Assad regime air defenses were allegedly activated in multiple provinces: #Latakia, #Tartus, #Homs & #Hama.
Mabrouk #Assad - your invincible air defenses shot down an aircraft!

... a #Russia IL-20 reconnaissance plane was shot down over #Syria tonight - amid #Israel airstrikes in #Latakia.

Tonight’s developments vis-a-vis #Israel & Russia are a pretty big deal.

It would seem #Israel may have acted without giving #Moscow prior warning = big challenge to their prior arrangement.

Or, #Russia did know, but got attacked by their errant ally in #Damascus = humiliating.
