In recent days, stories on various local news websites have flagged places like #Plymouth, #Hull, #StokeonTrent and #Stockport as having the “highest number of empty shops”, according to a new survey. So, here's my take (a long thread).
Let’s have a look at this in more detail, and do the one thing that often gets overlooked – scrutinising and interrogating the data on which these claims are based.
The first thing to ask is who’s behind the data, and, hence, get a sense of how reliable that data is. Articles cite the research as being conducted by a “tech firm”, Property Inspect.
I would give @Only1Argyle 6 stars if I could in relation to their 2020/21 accounts. They are out early, they are comprehensive and they are transparent. #PAFC #Plymouth
Revenue was down 19% in 2020/21, mainly due to the season taking place behind closed doors. The main hit was in terms of matchday (down 68%) but broadcast was up and academy/merch/commercial was solid #PAFC
Main costs are wages, Argyle's hardly changed during the year although went up from 69% to 85% of income due to Covid.
While incels are in the news again it’s important to remember

Not just concerns about incels but worries about poor sex and relationships education, lack of parental supervision/awareness online, PUAs, g*mer**te, the far right and more, and all amalgamations of these.
Journalists may want to cover this now, because it’s “news” not recognising there’s a long history of growing problems and a legacy of many people who tried to raise concerns and in many cases were dismissed as killjoys and prudes (particularly in the early to mid noughties).

In 2005, I set up a business selling CDs, namely mixtape CDs after graduating from Uni.
In 2006, my home was raided & my business was stopped. They said the CDs I was selling were in breach of copyright.

It was a complete shock as the exact same CDs I was selling were prevalent on most high streets and supermarkets. They were selling in their thousands in places such as #Tesco & #HMV. And #Woolworths were the actual UK Distributor of these CDs.

My office was vandalised again this morning. There is no place for hate and abuse in #plymouth. As our city’s first openly gay MP I sometimes receive hate based on who I love but I know those who peddle hate do not speak for the vast, vast majority of our city.
