(1/4) To encourage farmers to stop #stubbleburning, Udhami Kisan self-help group in Khosa Pando village of #Punjab's Moga district set a unique agro-machinery bank.
(2/4) This bank provides agro-machinery -- such as Mulcher, Happy Seeder, Bailer, Zero Drill and Roto Seeder -- at a nominal rent to manage crop residues, particularly #paddy #stubble.
(3/4) The impact has been amazing. Instead of burning stubble, 90% of the village's farmers have started ploughing the paddy residue back into the soil, improving soil fertility and increasing the next yield.

#Punjab #Farmers were encouraged to shift away from #bajra #pulses #oilseeds #chana & enter #wheat-#paddy cycle by a assured price mechanism policy; why not assure MSP for #pulses to Punjab farmers, which can cut 16,627 crore imports, reduce paddy acreage & paddy #straw ?
An example to show, how the shift from pulses in Punjab happened.
👇
In 1960-61, #pulses acreage in #Punjab was 9.03 lakh hectares with production of 7.09 lakh ton, but; in 2018-19 Kharif, it dropped to 7500 hectares with a production of 6200 tons
The per kg cost of pulse import increased from Rs 16.88 in 2006-07 to Rs 42.80 in 2016-17 (rise of 10%/year). If India were to continue to import large quantities of pulses, the unit cost of such imports is to increase for sure. Why not encourage Punjab farmers to grow pulses ?

For a long time, #farmers in the #Goblej village in #Gujarat dedicated their time and effort to cultivating #paddy. It was their sole source of income, so they harvested it twice a year.
However, this wasn’t yielding benefits for the farmers since paddy cultivation needs a lot of water and the rainfall has been deficient over the last few years. Moreover, growing the crop during summers,
additional use of fertilisers to maintain the fields, and excessive requirement of water resulting in soil degradation, added to the woes.
To improve their income, #HCCB organized exposure visits and training at the local Krishi Vigyan Kendra for these farmers on

#Paddy, farmers income/acre increased from Rs 37,660 in 2013-14 to Rs 53,000 in 2020-21,i.e. 40.73%

#Wheat farmers income/ acre increased to Rs 39,500 in 2020-21 Vs Rs 27,000 in 2013-14, an increase of 46.3%

What about input costs
👇
For growing #paddy in #Punjab per acre, in 2013-14, farmers owning land spent Rs 9,000 as input cost, & farmers leasing land spent Rs 24,000. But in 2021, farmers owning land spent Rs 18,000+ i.e. 100% increase, & farmers leasing land spent Rs 43,000, which is a 79.2% increase !
The input cost included around Rs 500 to grow a #paddy nursery for a one acre field in 2013-14, which has now increased to Rs 1,200; in 2013-14, the labor cost for transplanting nursery into the main field was 1800/acre, which has now increased to Rs 3500/acre i.e. 100% increase

I request chief minister @capt_amarinder to introduce an incentive linked crop diversification plan on the pattern of Haryana by announcing an incentive of Rs 10,000 per acre to all farmers switching from #paddy to other alternate crops, including maize. /1
Pb govt should announce that maize would be procured at MSP as has been done by Haryana to make #diversification scheme a success. Both steps are urgently needed to address the issue of labour shortage during paddy transplantation as well as to tackle ground water depletion. /2
To mitigate the suffering of vegetable farmers during this #COVID19 crisis, the State should give direct compensation to them. Besides, the govt should also immediately raise the milk procurement prices to offset the losses faced by dairy farmers due to increased input costs. /3

I request Punjab CM @capt_amarinder to prepone the paddy transplantation season to June 1 by removing the ban on transplantation of paddy till June 15 keeping in view of the severe labour shortage due to return of migrant labour to Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. 1/3
#lockdownindia Image
I would also urge CM to exponentially increase #paddy transplantation machines in the State to increase mechanisation so that the labour shortage could be offset to some extent. And for the farmers willing to purchase this machinery should be given 75 % subsidy. 2/3
Further, sensing the situation State government should also permit #transplantation of PUSA 44 paddy variety which is being disallowed on the pretext that it takes 20 to 22 days more to mature than other varieties leading to high moisture content later. 3/3

Thread👉The MSP Fallacy

If an M.P asks a question in Parliament regarding #Farmer Income, it is a cast iron rule that @nstomar(#Agri minister) starts his reply with "Govt announces Minimum Support Prices for 22 mandated crops"; what he doesn't say is that only 6% farmers get MSP
@nstomar @Devinder_Sharma @waglenikhil @MonaAmbegaonkar @jayantrld @_YogendraYadav @GauravPandhi @jyotiyadaav @sakshijoshii @vijaita @svaradarajan Mantri Ji mentions "Union Budget 2018 announced to fix the MSP at 1.5 times of the cost of production". What mantri ji forgets to mention is that MSP is still fixed acc to A2+FL cost(input cost+family labour)rather than C2 costs(which include interest on value of land & machines)

“In #agriculture, seed has to be sown, grown, collected, stored, distributed. Of all the activities, I like distributing seeds to people. Even if I lose what I have, they will be safe with someone else,” says Kamalaji Pujhari of Odisha's Koraput district. #WorldIndigenousDay Image
A member of the Bhumia #Adivasi community, Kamalaji has received both international recognition and the #PadmaShri for her work on #seed #conservation, an uphill task when many varieties of #paddy in her village have vanished. #WorldIndigenousDay Image
But these awards haven't helped Kamalaji in getting #rights over #seeds she once cultivated & is now conserving. This is due to the cumbersome nature of the claim making process that ismore accessible to pvt seed companies, research universities or individual commercial breeders. Image
