The tragic events in #Palma, #CaboDelgado #Mozambique, over the last few days have major implications for peace and security on the Swahili coast of East #Africa. Herewith some thoughts in a mega thread -->
This is an insurgency that has been snowballing since October 2017. It started attacking in the form of small groups of young men, brandishing mainly blunt weapons, and attacking remote security posts. It has evidently now grown into something much more serious.
Recently the U.S. sanctioned the group and called it an affiliate of #IslamicState. By doing so, the group has now been elevated into a box where policy solutions designed to deal with this problem will now be partially framed or qualified by that designation.
In #mozambique 🇲🇿 A modern day #dunkirk moment is happen in the besieged by isis(iswap) city of #palma at this moment.

Some of these vessels who went to the aid of the besieged people of #Palma were just passing #Mozambique . The crew of the vessels put there lives at risk to pick up who ever the could. The RO-RO/passenger vessel the blue fort was one such vessel.
But it also included tiny utility vessels like the "OCEANUS"
Thread on #Mozambique: 1) Since 24 Mar news of a multi-pronged militant attack on the town of #Palma in northern Mozambique have made international headlines, with reports of ongoing clashes, fatalities, displacement & militants capturing, at least temporarily, parts of Palma
2) But #ISIS, which has affiliated fighters in the region and operates through its so-called Central Africa Province branch, has yet to make any comment on the events. In fact, ISIS hasn't claimed any activity in Mozambique in nearly 5 months, since 1 Nov.
3) After a series of deadly raids on and a brief capture of villages and towns in Cabo Delgado (where Palma is also based) in 2020 - namely in March, April, May, June, August and late October - IS went quiet about its operations in the province
#ISIS announced that the Brigadier General of the #Syrian army and 6 soldiers were killed in the Deir ez-Zor desert.
Brigadier General Bashir Ismail, commander of the 137th Regiment of the 17th Division, was killed in ambush by ISIS cells while conducting reconnaissance and surveying in the desert of Al Mayadeen.
#ISIS announced that it has attacked the town of Agiri in the Nigerian state of Borno.
It is alleged that the attack was against a militia loyal to the Nigerian army, but there are no militias in the area.
There are armed villagers who do not pay allegiance to ISIS.
