THREAD šŸ§µ

West Africa gets pretty bad coverage in the mainstream media - itā€™s all Monkeypox, coups and conflicts!

And that includes Senegal.

#Senegal #African #Africa #westafrica #panafricanism
But Senegalā€™s actually never had a coup and never waged war against its neighbours.

Itā€™s one of the safest places you can visit.
Did you know that it will become the first African nation to host an Olympic event?

The Youth Olympic Games are coming in 2026 - an 18-day bonanza featuring 35 sports.

The MESSAGE Not The Messenger

One thing I've noticed about our people is that we have a hard time receiving the message. The messenger can't be to ugly or to short, to light skin or to dark skin, Christian like Marcus Garvey, or Muslim like Malcolm X.
Historical African kingdoms that we deemed to be of the "wrong faith" are dismissed. Despite lessons to be learned from them. African history is not perfect or flawless but we have to be open to a non biased reflection of it.
The 17th century Kongo queen Dona Beatriz was Christian, but she practiced a Black Nationalist form of Pan African Christianity to expel the Europeans and end the slave trade.

In 2007, Black U.S. chattel slavery descendants (African Americans/ BAs) won an EEOC ā€œsame raceā€ suit against an Ethiopian-owned company in Houston that discriminated against BAs in favor of native African drivers. Black ethnic specificity is already understood ā€” federallyā€¦
In the EEOC complaint, Andrew Cooper ā€” a black American working for Ethio Express reveals how he was told by Ethio Express management that,

"you blacks are happy as long as whites give you food stamps."
Cooper explains how Black American drivers ā€œwould be dispatched on ā€˜ghost trips,ā€™ in which a driver would arrive at a destination to find no passenger waiting, while routes with paying passengers were assigned to drivers of Ethiopian origin.ā€

#HopingAgainstHope: Panafricanism and the fight for Southern Rhodesia [Zimbabwe]

1/ Between 1970-73, the UK & US vetoed 5 resolutions against white minority dictatorship in S. Rhodesia. The proceedings of the UNSC meeting are eerily reminiscent of our current situation.
2/ In 1972, OAU held a meeting in Addis opened by HIM Hailesselassie to strategize further with regard to the situation in S. Rhodesia & the role of the UN. In 1973, a UNSC resolution was tabled by Kenya & Guinea calling for action against the illegal white minority gov't of SR.
3/ Odero-Jowi, representing Kenya gave a very elegant and moving speech against this debacle and rebuked the members of the UNSC[UN & UK] that consistently stop resolutions against the white minority govt of SR through what he aptly called "velvet vetoes."

#BlackPawns vs. #ProudBlacks

1/ Taking the conflict in N. Ethiopia as an opportunity, #African and #Ethiopian elites who despise #Ethiopia and #panafricanism have come out of the woodwork in droves.
2/ These are people who grew up convinced that it was a great miscarriage of justice that they were born black. Deep inside they keep thinking they should have been born white. The injustice of it all!
2/ They spend their whole lives chasing after the illusory dream of being as light skinned as possible. They work hard, they cajole and beg and suck up to their bosses. They even pray! And yet, they wake up every day bound in that black skin.

U.S. Based and many European news outlets like #CNN, #Bloommberg, #BBC, #Reuters and #France24 have reported the war in Ethiopia without the context of decades of atrocities that faced the Ethiopian people with the former ruling government under the TPLF.
The lack of context and bias in these coverages has emphasized on the violence and atrocities in Tigray and paints the nature of the conflict as a genocide. This reporting provides the narrative of African countries that is easier for the West to swallow and easier to dismiss

When the Obote clique seized power on Dec 12,1980,a no of patriotic 4ces started considering the qn of armed struggle 2remove the dictatorship.
2lines of thought emerged on the strategy that shd be adopted:
Some advocated a coup dā€™etat others advocated a protracted peopleā€™s war
They, later formed the Popular Resistance Fighters [and went on] to form the National Resistance Movement and Army, rejected the strategy of a coup. The main point against staging a coup was the presence of Tanzanian troops in Uganda which could always be reinforced from TZ . 2/20
By trying to capture the radio station and take power in one day, they would have been making a gift of theseselves to the Tanzanians, since they had already decided to become backers of Obotesā€™s dictatorship. 3/20
