#Pandemicademia - A Thread on Online Intensives (Despair all thee who enter here...)

I am currently in the middle of delivering an intensive course on Remedies - all online. It is exhausting. Maintaining student engagement is... problematic. I thought I would share a few thought
Firstly, I think the students are finding it very hard to find the time to keep up with the materials/lectures/seminars. This is particularly acute for an intensive. In F2F Intensives there is recognition that students need to dedicate time and attend to be able to cope
The online context has been very different. Buy in to start with was fine - 75% attended the first lecture (which I delivered live on Zoom) [as an aside this is a good tip for those delivering new online courses, as it allows Q and connection]

OK Judicial Studies tweeps!

A couple of us are organising a virtual morning tea next Tuesday 10am (AEST), as a bit of a chance to catch-up, fight the iso-blues and talk all things courts.

If you are keen, please drop me a DM.

#pandemicademia #courts #judges #judicialtheory
Others, please get in touch - it has been in my head for a while to start building a judicial studies network in Oz (and beyond), so this might prompt me to start keeping some records....

Thread 3: Substituting Exams as Final Assessments

OK, it has been a while - but #pandemicademia...

In this thread I will outline some thoughts on final assessments, and developing responses to the loss of traditional exams Image
Firstly, you will note the change of nomenclature.

Over the course of the last month, I have been increasingly convinced of the importance of describing what we are doing as ** 'Emergency Remote Learning' **('ERL'), and not as Online Learning.
Because (1) what we are doing is not normal - we don't have the time, resources, experience or capacity to do this 'properly' - we cant lose sight of the emergency context; and (2) out of deference to the excellent OL people and to differentiate the ambitions

Soooo. This morning, for the first time in over a month, I felt like I was finally kinda on top of things.

The long weekend had left me refreshed.

Maybe today would not constantly scrambling and I could (maybe) even think about research this afternoon.
I had a zoom moot at 10am. At 9am, I thought, lets log on early and get all set up.

No internet.

OK, I thought, I will set up hotspot on phone.

No internet.

45mins of scrambling.

Messaged students.

Had to ride bike to work. Just made it in time for rescheduled moot
Students all stressed.

Just about made them all cry.

None of the joy of completion of F2F.

Had to spend serious time reassuring them all

No longer relaxed. No thought of research. Still no internet at home.

2020 you suck

Typical #pandemicademia

I want to do a shout out to all the awesome @AcademicChatter #pandemicademia people out there struggling with their research, but still finding time to support each other
My awesome wife @juliettemm was feeling the pressure of full time academic, full time mum, part time PhD + emotional support during #pandemic.

So #lawtwitter, I have been harping on a bit about #onlinelearning in #pandemicademia - (a short thread on assessment)

For the last 4 yrs, I have had an online quiz as my 1st assessment in my admin course. It is deliberately technical, precise and requires the readings
It has commonly had a 30% fail rate - because students hate details, & don't pay attention. I use it as a wake up call, reminding them that details matter - in admin law, & in practice (this is a final year course)

I have always allowed those who fail to take a sup for 50% max
As it is only worth 15% of overall grade, I have found the little bit of terror helps set them up for course, as they take everything a bit more seriously.

However, it has a slightly scary reputation, and does cause some stress. In normal circs this balance seems right
