1/n Quick thread on #Afghanistan's indigenous Hindus & the present state of the Pakhtuns. Based on speaking with a Hindu lady who lived and worked there, speaks Dari and Pashto, did several field projects there, & was invited to speak at US State Dept. on security-related issues.
2/n Most Afghan Hindus are indigenous to Afghanistan, in the sense that they are the oldest inhabitants there at this point. There are some who went there from India only a few centuries ago, and are no less "Afghan", but most have been there prior to all others known today.
3/n Some indigenous Afghan Hindus are classified as Tajik & even Uzbek. More educated in today's times, & follow Persianate culture, i.e., they are basically Persian & Turkic Hindus.
But majority of native Afghan Hindus are Pakhta (#Sanskrit Pakta), or Pakhtun/Pashtun...

خوشحال خان مغلیہ سلطنت کےمنصب دار تھےلیکن بعدمیں اسےچھوڑ کر افغان کی جنگ میں اور مغلوں کیخلاف تلوار تان لی تھی۔
انکی شاعری پرحماسہ رنگ بہت غالب تھا۔ خوشحال خان وہ پہلےپشتو شاعرتھےجس نے ننگ وغیرت،
رزم وبزم، مردانگی، قوم پرستی، تصوف،سیاسیات، فلسفہ، طب، جنسیات، تاریخ، عشق و جمالیات جیسےہزاروں ان گنت موضوع پشتوشاعری کی جھولی میں ڈال دیئے۔
انکی بےباکانہ شاعری پر آج400سال بعد بھی ہمارامعاشرہ بحث کی اجازت نہیں دیتا۔

Once upon a time there was stunningly beautiful lady of Yousafzai tribe who used to live in Mardan (Pakistan). Her name was Panai. It is said that many men, by the hundreds, fell in love with her, all at the same time. Everybody wanted to marry her.

to result in feuds and fights, which it did. But only one man could marry her. The one who lure her, may be the one whom she had some feelings for. Nah, wrong. Only the one who was the most influential among all of her lovers, had more to offer was the one who could marry her.
That lucky man was Syed Abbas Mian, who took her to Panjtar and then to his own village Mangal Tanra.
What did the rest of the unsuccessful lovers did? They wrote poetry mourning their fate and ridiculing Panai.

Few quick points.
1. James Darmesteter, the famous french Iranist, compiled more than 100 popular #Pashto songs in 1888-90 in his Chants populaires des Afghans. It also narrates accounts of various wars/battles using Charbeta (چاربیته) the story telling form of Pashto poetry...

...including that of Ahmad Shah Abdali, Dost M. Khan, Syed Ahmed , and the following wars including 2nd Anglo-Afghan war. It names many other people, which are unknown to us today, who showed bravery in the war, but it doesn't mention any Malalai or any woman for that matter.
Remember the book was compiled about 10 years after the battle of Maiwand and one would expect that local native accounts, told via folklore, may mention it but this one at least doesn't. Does any other Pashto/Afghan account of that time mention her? It is to investigate!

#AhmadShahDurrani wrote both prose & poetry mainly in Pashto, but also in Dari/Persian.
He regularly held Majlis-e ulama (“Assembly of the Learned/Scholars”) devoted to divinity, civil law & literature, even when on expeditions.

@DawoodAzami Ishrat (who composed #AhmadShahDurrani’s Shahnamah in #Persian) says that the #Shah really likes the company of & discussions with the scholars/learned people.
He adds the #Shah doesn't have any other love "except the love of #book".
