Whilst we welcome news that the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) will be scrapped for NHS and social care workers - WE MUST GO FURTHER ā¬‡ļøā¬‡ļø 1/
Since itā€™s introduction in 2015, we have called for an end to the IHS for ALL 2/
It acts as a form of double taxation on people who already pay to use the NHS through their taxes, penalising people simply because they werenā€™t born here 3/

On the 12th March we outlined our position that the Immigration Health Surcharge should be scrapped, not increased - read our statement at: docsnotcops.co.uk/scrap-the-immiā€¦ (1/THREAD) #ScrapTheSurcharge #PatientsNotPassports
This was the day after @RishiSunak announced that the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) ā€“ paid at point of visa application/renewal would rise from Ā£400/year to Ā£624/year (disgustingly, as he announced Coronavirus measures)

2/Thread #ScrapTheSurcharge #PatientsNotPassports
On 12th March we said:
* #ScrapTheSurcharge in its entirety
* Charging for NHS access is about govt tearing up universal care, not raising money
* IHS is an additional tax on migrants
* The IHS is motivated by furthering xenophobic & racist narratives /3 #PatientsNotPassports the Immigration Health Surc...

We'll be joining #ClapForOurCarers tonight at 8pm, but we'll be chanting - as loud as we can
šŸ“¢Test, test, TEST!

Last week @BorisJohnson joined #ClapForOurCarers-applauding NHS staff on national TV outside No.10.

As leader of @Conservatives - the party that has systematically undermined the health & social care sectors for a decade under austerity cuts - this could not be more ironic (3)

NEW: "I nearly died but was still presented with a Ā£93,000 bill for my treatment" - Simba Mujakachi writes in @MetroUK on how the #HostileEnvironment has affected him - and many others metro.co.uk/2019/12/09/i-nā€¦ (thread) #JusticeForSimba #PatientsNotPassports
@MetroUK 2/
Simba had a stroke
His family were told he only had a 30% chance of survival
Simba survived the operation, which involved removing a piece of his skull, but was left paralysed on his left side

In the stroke rehabilitation unit, Simba was presented with a bill for Ā£93,000
@MetroUK 3/
As part of the ā€˜#HostileEnvironmentā€™, the Conservative govt changed the law in 2017 so that ā€˜ineligible migrantsā€™ have to pay up-front for ā€˜non-urgentā€™ care.

Yet even though Simba's operation was needed to save his life, he has to pay for it.

Free at the point of need?

How many more people will have to suffer and die because of this unethical, immoral, senseless laws? Our patient, an elderly woman suffering from 2 forms of cancer had vital #NHS treatment delayed for months because she couldnā€™t pay Ā£150,000 upfront 1/14 theguardian.com/society/2019/dā€¦
She came to the UK to be with her family, who are British citizens. Once she arrived, she was diagnosed with two cancers. Her care was delayed for months and now doctors say her care can only be life extending, not lifesaving. 2/14
Her care should never have been withheld. Safeguards are meant to protect patients in need of urgent and immediate care from having their treatment delayed. But once more, #NHS charging laws smothered all safeguards and caused serious harm to a patient. 3/14 Image

In 2018, 1 in 5 attempts by our volunteers to register a patient with a GP practice were wrongly refused for reasons that contradict #NHS Guidelines. #PatientsNotPassports Image
The reasons for refusals, with lack of paperwork as most common issue, show that already #vulnerable people, such as destitute people without fixed accommodation or undocumented #migrants, are likely to be disproportionately affected. Image
#GP practices are also inconsistent in their approach to registering patients, with 17% of practices agreeing to patient registrations in some cases and refusing in others. Image

What is the cost of #charging in the #NHS?
ā€œWhen I first saw Sara, I thought she was cuddling a baby under her cardigan and that she had brought her sick child to see us. I was terribly wrong.ā€ Peter, GP volunteer in our clinic @Kandel_Light @MetroUK 1/4 metro.co.uk/2019/08/16/im-ā€¦
ā€œIt is difficult to see how the already overstretched #NHS will manage to distinguish between #EU citizens with a right to NHS care and those who will have to pay ā€“ especially as two million settled EU citizens do not have settled status paperwork yet.ā€ #PatientsnotPassports 2/4 Image
ā€œHospitals and the whole #NHS will also be put under immense pressure. Hospitals are already struggling to implement the current rules, often making mistakes and denying treatment in cases where it was urgent and necessary.ā€ 3/4 Image

The Department of Health has sent a directive to NHS Trusts telling them "new visitors from [countries in the EU] to the UK will be chargeable at the standard NHS tariff" from Oct 31st (thread)

We've been campaigning against NHS charges since the 2014 Immigration Act, which introduced new immigration health "surcharges" - increasing the costs of visas for non-EEA nationals working, studying, or visiting families for longer than six months irr.org.uk/news/immigratiā€¦ /2
Since 2014 the Immigration Health Surcharge has been doubled. The costs were already prohibitive. It is a form of "double taxation" as @SatbirLSingh @JCWI_UK explains here: talkradio.co.uk/news/plan-doubā€¦ /3

Saloum has lived in Derby for almost 10 years, but had never tried to access the #NHS before.
ā€œSomebody came and told they couldnā€™t care for me anymore because of my statusā€¦ They told me Iā€™d have to pay and it would be very expensive.ā€

theguardian.com/society/2019/fā€¦
"This can happen to other people too. Even if I dieā€¦another person might survive. You have to protect life in this world, you know? Thatā€™s why Iā€™m interested in telling my storyā€ Weā€™re grateful to Saloum and his friends for standing up and fighting for a better #NHS for everyone
ā€œHe was homeless leaving the hospital. He had to stay on my sofa.. can you imagine someone as sick as him staying on a sofa? Honestly, itā€™s just ridiculous... Heā€™s sick and they want him to stay on the street.ā€ Saloum's friend.

Saloum fled Gambia after risking his life challenging FGM. Diagnosed with brain and lung cancer, given days to live. After days of treatment, he was told he wasnā€™t eligible because he couldn't pay. He was discharged w/out any ongoing care. theguardian.com/society/2019/fā€¦
The hospital decision was wrong: urgent care should never be denied. We pressured the hospital, which then agreed his outpatient care was urgent. Saloum is currently staying in a small bedsit after friends and local community raised money to pay for it #PatientsNotPassports Image
"This case shows the #HostileEnvironment is alive and well in the #NHS, forcing clinical staff to withhold care from dying patients. Doctors and nurses should be able to treat the patient in front of them, not least to ease pain and suffering at the end of lifeā€ Lucy Jones Image
