I started am now in #perimenopause after losing both my ovaries to #Endometriosis

There is nothing that breaks me more than the thought of not being able to conceive and carry a child of my own in my uterus 👶🏽

This🧵is about navigating the new season which is a neglected topic
Our ovaries produce eggs for fertilization and also make the hormones (estrogen and progesterone) that play an important role in reproductive development and menstruation.

If, like me, you lose your ovaries early it increases our risk of osteoporosis and heart disease.
I now appreciate the role my ovaries played in contributing to the good quality of life. I didn’t have to worry about mood changes, vaginal and bladder problems, sexual function, fertility, hot flashes, sleep problems etc.

Talk to me about #perimenopause and teaching. I know lots of people are discussing it, which is great, but I'd like to probe a bit more deeply and maybe write a blog, as it strikes me as a big topic for women of around my age... #edutwitter 1/2
I'm interested particularly in how (or if) it manifests itself, has an impact on work and life, and what strategies people have for managing it - and leaders have for supporting colleagues. 2/2
Gosh! Just finished work and this has clearly hit a massive chord. I haven't had time to reply to individuals at all but I promise I will be delving further into this and doing some writing!

I can relate with the women sharing their stories #BelowTheBelt so many visits to the ER that I remember the number of times I felt dismissed because "it was normal" bring tears to my eyes...
I wonder whether an earlier diagnosis and treatment would have saved my ovaries...?
4 surgeries later and having lost my ovaries and any chance of conceiving naturally crushes me every day

The whole system is broken

I have been eager to get here, to #Postmenopause finally!

The past five years of #Perimenopause were some of the most difficult of my life.

When they say the #Menopause transition is like puberty in reverse, it is no lie.
I remember how overwhelmed by it all 11.5yo me was when I first got my period--the physical changes, yes, and also just as hard the emotional and mental changes.

When I was 13 and then when I was 16, I had my first experiences of depression. They were difficult years.

October is Menopause Awareness Month, also known as World Menopause Month.

We need that awareness and more of it every day.

I've written 14 essays on #perimenopause and aging for FEMINIST GIANT, which are all free to read and share. feministgiant.com

I’ve been writing about my #perimenopause for a few years now. My essays have covered the physical as well as emotional and mental health impacts of this transition.

I will soon start power lifting & will be documenting that too! Until then 👇🏽 feministgiant.com/p/essay-menopa… #Menopause
Last year I started regular:
- strength training (for my bones)
- stretching (for my joints)
- walk for an hour (for my heart and anxiety)
- dance (for my heart)

But this year, I've been less consistent because I started traveling for work again.

For the coming year, I want to graduate myself from at-home weights to working with a trainer to power lift.

It is consistently recommended for those of us going through menopause. So yalla!

It's #WorldMentalHealthDay and #MenopauseAwarenessMonth.

One of the hardest impacts of #perimenopause for me has been anxiety. I've written about the ways it's kicked my fucking ass feministgiant.com/p/essay-fallin…
There have been mornings when I am overwhelmed with an impending sense of doom. And I wonder if my anxiety–brand new, I was never an anxious person–is my despair at that fuckery that once flummoxed younger me.

My #perimenopause has mostly had two settings
- beat someone up
- have a breakdown
Which is why I love the film Everything Everywhere All at Once so much: Evelyn beats many people up and has a breakdown of sorts. It is the perfect menopause allegory. #MenopauseAwarenessMonth
Everything Everywhere All at Once is the perfect menopause allegory film.

I don’t care if that’s not what The Daniels had in mind when they wrote and directed it. It’s art. It’s out there. And my menopause claims it! feministgiant.com/p/essay-the-me… #MenopauseAwarenessMonth
And I don’t know if Michelle Yeoh has ever talked about her #menopause transition. I don’t care, I love her. She’s 4yrs older than me so I’m claiming her too. It is enough for me that Evelyn gets to beat people up AND have a breakdown of sorts because fuck, yes please!

October is #MenopauseAwarenessMonth.

I am “aware” of my menopause every day. To make up for the silence & taboo that ensures we know next to nothing about what happens to our bodies during this time, I'll be sharing some of my essays throughout the month.

If you've ever menstruated, you can go through #menopause, a point in life that marks 12 months without a menstrual cycle.

The time leading up to menopause is known as #perimenopause, and once you’ve reached the point of 12 months w/out a menstrual cycle, you are post-menopausal
It is not just cis women who experience menopause.

Remember non-binary people, trans men, and other gender non-conforming /expansive groups who also experience menopause and do so under even greater levels of silence and taboo.

A necessary wreckage.

One of the greatest gifts of #menopause is shamelessness.

In lieu of my menstrual cycle, instead of shedding the lining of my uterus, I am shedding the lining of patriarchal fuckery that I was socialized into.

Understanding the macrocosm of the pandemic through the microcosm of #perimenopause: we must emerge, not regress.

I refuse to emerge as if unscathed. I insist that we all be scathed, that we refuse to be the people we were at the start.

As I promised, I called my latest essay "Menopause is Shit. Menopause is Amazing."

I feel as if I'm almost there now. Deceptive perhaps (when your period returns after 10 months away, you understand menopause can be the great deceiver), but I feel as if I’m arriving somewhere.
To get there, I look back at the years behind me as if reassessing a wreckage of sorts. A necessary wreckage. I don’t know who I am becoming but to emerge into her, I must unbecome.

My #autistic #menopause with and without hormone treatment.
It’s 12 days since my GP told me I had to stop using hormone treatment patches for the next four weeks.
I was horrified.
It’s difficult to describe just how bad things were before I started using HRT patches.
1/
I tried bargaining for a different approach, or a notice period to prepare myself, but it was futile.
My GP emphasised that it was “only for four weeks”.
I reminded her how bad things had been before I started using the patches.
It was non-negotiable so we agreed to disagree.
2/
The fact that I’d started using #HRT was entirely due to serendipity.
Last year I had lots of bothersome physical and cognitive symptoms I hadn’t even associated with #menopause.
I assumed that being post-menopausal, I’d have to accept this as my new normal.
How wrong I was!

Thank all the good things in the world that I'm menopausal. Last period was 8 months ago; 4 more to go. Come on!
I've talked often about how #perimenopause has been kicking my fucking ass. But right now, we are BFFs.

I saw #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce

I doubt if many–if any–reviews will say it so, I will: THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT PERIMENOPAUSE IS! It is everything, It is everywhere. And it is all at once.
Everytime Evelyn rolls her eyes, says she’s not ready to fight, picks herself up again, bloodied but becoming steadily determined to break more bones of anyone who gets in her way, I want to point to the screen and shout “That’s it!” #EverythingEverywhereAllAtOnce #Perimenopause
