How do you feel when someone asks you to write them a letter of recommendation for residency or fellowship?
Do you feel:

Now that I have a good approach, I actually love writing letters. Crazy, I know!

Since many are in the throes of letters (or just finished) thought I’d share my approach. I welcome your insights, too!
Cool? Cool.
Let’s 1st assume that the person you’ve agreed to recommend, is 1 you CAN recommend. If you can’t? You owe it to them to be honest.

First, I read the PS. Then I gather more info.
Specific questions help:
"What did you want me to learn about you by telling this story?"
Concrete statements help, too:
"This part tells me more about your parents than you. How can we modify this to underscore who YOU are?"

I started doing this with our @EmoryMedicine after feeling overwhelmed by multiple individual asks. Plus I kept dropping the ball.
Or worse, I gave unhelpful, nondescript feedback because I was too busy to really focus.
And so. I cleared out calendar time JUST for this.

Residency Interview, Circa 1995
Him: “You say here in your #PERSONALSTATEMENT ‘Research is the linchpin of a thriving academic medical center.’”
Me: *smug smile*
Him: “Tell me what you meant by that.”
Me: 😳
Rut roh.
Real talk? I just wanted to use the word “linchpin.”

Also? I thought it would sound smart. (Spoiler alert: I didn't match there.)😂
Hand over heart—that EXACT sentence was in my PS for residency. That moment (which DID happen) was mortifying. But I LOVE that it did. Why? Because it serves as a #PSfail cautionary tale.

I know a LOT of folks on #medtwitter are thinking about writing a #personalstatement right now. After the great #linchpin debacle of '95, I've learned to LOVE the PS process.

We will be posting some tips to ensure you make the most of your personal statement and avoid those errors 🙅

1) The same one is sent to all 5 university choices - so don't tailor it just for one university, as the other 4 will read it too!
2) Make sure you test your PS in the UCAS form! 47 lines is not the same on Word as it is in the online form, and the way your paragraphs fall/formatting will also be different. Paste it in and check you're happy with it BEFORE you're about to send it off!
