1) Last week the #Yazidi community lost a true hero. Jameel Ghanem Chomer was a pivotal and constant figure of the humanitarian and advocacy response to the #YazidiGenocide.
2) This man’s life deserves a much greater tribute than I can offer, but I do want to share some comments and images about his story and his service.
3) Jameel was a schoolteacher from Borek on the north side of #Sinjar Mountain. His family fled from the Islamic State (IS) attack on the morning of the genocide (Aug. 3, 2014).

October 21, 2016 around five years ago, I was at Nawaran on the frontline during the open phase of the Mosul offensive in the Kurdistan region as Peshmerga pushed ISIS back toward the city and then handed over operations to Iraqi army and ISOF
It seems like many years ago, more than it was, that I was there, there was this very cold night I recall sleeping there with artillery and small arms fire going on all night
The morning of the 21 we had tea and warmed ourselves by the fire around a burning fire

THREAD:
The only #Peshmerga commander Qadir Khorani [a PUK] who didn't abandon Yazidis & fought against ISIS uncovered for the first time that he has been "investigated several times for not carrying the command to leave #Sinjar."

"I informed high rank officials that [Peshmerga] forces have started retreating. They said they would respond me in 10 mins. They called me in 30 mins. They ordered to withdraw my forces. I rejected, telling them how can I retreat whereas ISIS is advancing & ppl r coming to us."
"They said 'we r commanding you to retreat.' I said women & children & civilians r on way, I'll never leave them alone w/o fighting. I am responsible in front of the people and God. They contacted me back in 10 mins, once again commanded me to carry out the command to retreat.

Tonight, the 1st of my 2-part series on #ISIS’s resurgence in Iraq airs on @PBS @NewsHour Weekend. In cooperation w/ @theIFUND, I spent 3 weeks traveling across 3 provinces to investigate the extent to which ISIS has regrouped after its official defeat last year.
In August, Abu Bakr Al Baghdadi released a new audio recording in which he pointed to #Iraq as the epicenter of #ISIS's resurgence. The facts on the ground suggest that this is not just an ambition the group aspires to in the future - it’s already a reality.
ISIS attacks in the rural areas around Tuz Khurmatu, Kirkuk and Hawija aren’t an exception - they’ve become an almost daily occurrence for the civilians who live there. What’s more - #Iraq’s security forces appear ill-equipped to face #ISIS in its insurgent form.

1) Today—on the 4th anniversary of the Kocho Massacre, when #IS slaughtered an entire town as part of the Yazidi Genocide—#Turkey bombed a #Yazidi convoy in #Sinjar that was returning from the Kocho Massacre memorial ceremony, killing Mam Zaki, an important Yazidi #PKK leader.
2) The convoy contained leaders & members of the Yazidi #YBŞ defense force and affiliated political institutions, including Mazlum Shingal, the military commander of the #YBŞ, who—like Mam Zaki—is also a #Yazidi. Mazlum (shown in photo) was injured but not killed in the attack.
3) A #Yazidi from #Sinjar (Tel Ezeir) named Harbo, a member of the Self-Administrative Council (a local governing institution that is a civilian political counterpart to the YBŞ defense force), was injured in the attack. Two others were killed; their identities are not yet known.

2) On KDP withdrawal from #Sinjar, see previous thread:
3) The past week’s events led to hysterical claims that Peshmerga were returning to Sinjar/airstrikes hit Sinjar/etc. All such claims false.

1) A MONUMENTAL DAY: The #KDP has FULLY WITHDRAWN from #Sinjar. I'm completely SPEECHLESS—(well, not completely): Bye-bye KDP!
#Yazidi #Iraq
2) After over 3 years of fighting for this outcome, the #Yazidi community has finally scored a major victory in reclaiming their homeland.
3) After #Peshmerga withdrew from Kirkuk yesterday (for which the PUK was hit w/ blame), the effect continues in KDP-controlled areas today.
