A thread for this #TeacherTalkTuesday

Across the country, teachers and students are heading back to school. As a teacher, it’s one of my favorite times of the year -- one filled with incredible optimism that reflects the hope that comes with a fresh start.
But we’re also at a make-or-break moment with our public education system. The same old debates have left us with underfunded schools, underpaid teachers, and growing inequality.
If we’re going to meet the challenges of today and the future, we have to get public education right. @PeteButtigieg has plans to transform how we fund our schools, value our teachers, and educate our students. We’re just getting started, but here are a few:

2/ I believe @SteveGrossmanMA became the first to endorse #Pete2020, on 4/11. He is a former DNC Chair, former Massachusetts State Treasurer, and current CEO of the Initiative for a Competitive Inner City, a non-profit that trains inner-city entrepreneurs.

3/ Grossman called Pete “a Midwestern, down-to-earth, smart, savvy, in-touch candidate” who can flip industrial states. “My concern is the future of the US... I think Pete has the capacity to be the beacon for an awful lot of people who really feel a deep, deep sense of concern.”

Symbolism of the color palette used in @PeteButtigieg’s 2020 Presidential campaign: a thread
(📸: @WTVYNews4)
I went to the Design ToolKit on the website peteforamerica.com, and it turns out that each color in Pete’s campaign has symbolism to it. Pete thinks everything out very thoroughly, I didn’t even realize it went right down to the colors!
So, what does each color mean? I took the meanings off his website so you can view them in his thread! The page you can find it at is here:

For those interested in hearing about Joseph Buttigieg from his colleagues and former students, these tributes are lovely. Also a couple of nice memories of a very young Peter and a father’s pride in his son. #PeteButtigieg

1/ The HEALTH piece is most important to me. At 25, I had a quarter size blood clot in my lungs. I had trouble breathing, and as a Pre-Med major early in college I learned about blood clots. The intake nurse didn’t believe me when I walked in the ER short of breathe with
2/ chest pain. I cried and screamed for them to believe me. I felt I was dying at TWENTY FIVE. The ignored me. I stopped a black doctor walking through the emergency room and told him. I was immediately brought back for test. Within 30 minutes I was in ICU. CT scan revealed a
3/ blood clot. My mom was told I might not survive. I did because 1) I knew the signs, and 2) a black doctor took me seriously when the white nurses would not. I owe Dr. P my life. Health Equity is truly a life or death situation. Implicit bias in the ER is a huge problem.

Aaron Sorkin, as screenwriter of the TV series The West Wing, demonstrated a deeply romantic view of American politics, full of lofty idealism and moral leadership. Summarized in one statement by chief of staff Leo McGarry about the search for the next president:
“You take the smartest, most decent, honorable person you know, and you make them president.” In the series, this ultimate good man, Matthew Santos, then succeeds from a seemingly hopeless position with majestic speeches and the right moral compass to win the election.

About climbing my 1st 14er, campaigning for @PeteButtigieg at 14,000ft, finding community with strangers, an electrifying moment, and the biggest surprise of my life!
We arrived at the #MtEvans trailhead around 7:30am, the peak was lost in fast moving clouds. #14er
Mt Evans magnets & shirts don't lie, the GOATS! So awesome.
We had goats greet us at the trailhead, we kept our distance &
ogled them with delight. #14ers

#TeamPete, I brought my @playmobil #minime & a #Pete2020 banner for some inspiring photos exploring #AmericatheBeautiful.

“Residents have seen improvement under Buttigieg. Conrad Damian, from the SE side, noticed a greater focus by police on being visible & having positive interactions w/ people. He also credits the mayor for use of technology to improve response to crime.”
southbendtribune.com/news/publicsaf…
To make more headway, Pete made a push for police transparency that allowed residents to see what was happening & hold the PD accountable. The transparency hub is advanced for a small city. police-southbend.opendata.arcgis.com
There has also been a push to diversity the SB police force. The front page of the website is a call for recruits. So far, Mayor Pete says, they have not been able to get as many black applicants as they would like, but it remains an ongoing effort.

@Asians4Pete @RobertoCSada @PeteButtigieg @SenGillibrand Because not too many people have the kind of analytical clarity based on firm principles and values that Pete does. I feel like Pete is a monk philosopher who spent years working out his views beliefs thoughts, ideas and underlying values, faith etc...
@Asians4Pete @RobertoCSada @PeteButtigieg @SenGillibrand And then thought about how they would apply in a real political world. Tested them while being a Mayor, making adjustments along the way. And then realized he could apply them at the national level as President...at this unique moment of need...
@Asians4Pete @RobertoCSada @PeteButtigieg @SenGillibrand This is why he never falters and comes across authentic no matter where he speaks or to whom he speaks. They are part of his DNA. Embedded in his mind, brain and heart. So they just come out naturally. No one can beat that. And that gives him confidence and conviction...

My schedule is crazy some weeks so the posts here and on @EastBayForPete are more sporadic than I would like, but something I am seeing a need for is a local megaphone for minority voices. There's a lot of work to be done to make sure minority voices are heard loud & clear
Thinking about creating a series of original content based on the interviews I can get with local minority community leaders. People from BLM, Immigrant, Muslim communities etc...
The goals would be:
1) To inform my local community how they can better support these communities

I'm floored. My 73 yr old mother just said she made sure to write down the address where she can send a $5 check to @PeteButtigieg when she gets her social security. (1/6)
Some years I've had to push her to vote, never imagined she'd donate to a campaign - neither did she. ❤️#PeteForAmerica (2/6)
Also, my sister wanted me to hang my Boot Edge Edge sign in her restaurant. We are in a very rural, very red area. Usually we stay away from advertising politics as to not risk losing customers. She no longer cares because @PeteButtigieg is the real deal. (3/6)

THREAD: I know 2020 is supposed to be the year of women but when I see @PeteButtigieg I see myself, a gay millennial. Its so powerful and I csnt help but root for him. It's not something a straight white Christian man can understand, no matter how "woke" they are.
I always wanted to go into politics but didnt bc I thought l one day when I came out that would be that. To see someone just like me do something I always wanted to but that I never thought was possible is forcing me to reevaluate everything. I thought I was well adjusted
To our current reality, gsy rights are starting to be recognized and in parts of the country we are accepted as equals. But the past few weeks seeing someone serious running for an office I thought I could never hold has got me thinking. I would never suggest we should

Mayor Pete Buttigieg: “I get that I’m the young guy in the conversation, but I would say experience is what qualifies me to have a seat at this table”
“I know it’s more traditional to maybe come from Congress, to have a background in Washington. But I would also argue that we would be well served if Washington started to look more like our best run cities and towns rather than the other way around.”
“I have more years of govt experience under my belt than the president. I also have more years of executive government experience than the vice president, and more military experience than anybody to walk into that office on day once since George H W Bush”
