THREAD: New survey results out today in @NewStatesman from me & @christabelcoops (bit.ly/2QT6Oj7)

Take aways:
Leavers do NOT want to leave with any Brexit more than Remainers want to Remain & a quarter of Leavers rank Remain above at least one Brexit option 1/5
The shifts away from Labour and the Tories in the EU elections are going to a problem in a new GE – confirming other recent polls. 88% of people who voted in EU elections say Brexit will be important in their GE vote & 66% of those who didn’t vote say that too. 2/5
The Tories in their leadership election are already moving towards trying to grab back their Brexit Party defectors. Will Labour move? After #PeterboroughByElection , less likely… a dangerous lesson to learn in my opinion 3/5

Some quick thoughts on #PeterboroughByElection

1/
Many sighs of relief will be heard today, following LAB retention of a seat when much seemed stacked against them: disgraced incumbent; bullish and v.active challenger; less than scintillating candidate; etc

3/
Turnout was also pretty high (48%), so can defend result as more as being more than just core votes

Looks like I was spot on ..

Labour 30.9% (-17.2)
Brexit Party 28.9% (+28.9)
Cons 21.4% -25.5%

-Farage's ghost of First Past the Post returns
-Though on these numbers Brexit Party would bring down Tories
-Pressure on Corbyn to drift to Remain cools

Two competing interpretations of the result for the Brexit Party. The charitable version is that the party is only 8 weeks old, had no data on voters, which hit its ground game, but still came within 700 votes of Labour & took more than enough to cost Tories next election
To that you might add that Peterborough is about 203rd on the list of "UKIP/Brexit Party" seats so a little further down than Rochester and Strood (which UKIP won) but a long way from most fertile territory

Hearing result in Peterborough is very close....Labour and BXP anxious. It’s going to be fascinating.
Relatively few Tories actually bothered to turn up to campaign today by all accounts but those who did aren’t happy. One texts:

“V angry with some of the things that happened today. When we went inside flats we were asked to take leaflets left by other parties them out...”
”...so the residents don’t see them, me being a Tory but supporter of the Brexit party in private found this very infuriating, in the end we collected more than a few hundred leaflets from other parties.”

Not an ideal strategy.
