The jury questionnaire for the #DerekChauvinTrial is a total of 69 questions. Two of them have provided a center basis for the questioning: “How favorable or unfavorable are you about #BlackLivesMatter” and “How favorable or unfavorable are you about #BlueLivesMatter.”
The jury questionnaire serves as somewhat of a prerequisite for the attorneys to determine if people would be able to serve as impartial jurors, but the way the attorneys expound upon these questions during voir dire examination has many raising an eyebrow at the system.

Isak Aden was a 23 y/o college student, entrepreneur, & father figure to his younger siblings when he was killed by police in Eagan, MN, on July 2, 2019.

Four years ago today, I was with my family on vacation when news reached us that a Black man in St. Paul had been killed by police. We quickly learned his name was Philando Castile, a man we knew as Mr. Phil, a beloved staff member at my son's school.
I have only one clear memory of an interaction with Mr. Phil before this death, and that was at some all-school gathering where he handed me a cookie and asked me to try it. I think he said it was a new recipe they were working on for the cafeteria.
After his death, we quickly came to know exactly how precious he was to so many kids and families at our school. His absence remains heartbreaking.

It’s hard to move past the grief of Castile’s death. Black people feel the pain and loss of black life as if it were our very own blood that had been brutalized—because it easily could have been.

I'm tellin' you man, black folks, black Muslims, Arabs, Desis, Mexicans, etc., are out in the streets dancing to a tune so loud, they don't even know what key it's in. Because of this, many are unwilling and unable to acknowledge the main reason why
the death of #GeorgeFloyd has gone global, has gone viral, is because Chuck authorized it to go viral. The liberal wing of Chuck has authorized outrage over the death of a black man even though we've been dying at the hands of white cops and black hoodlums for decades!

When #PhilandoCastile was #MurderedbyPolice it galvanized the Twin Cities community to seek justice. Here is Castile's Uncle On Community-Police Relations. npr.org/2020/05/30/866…
#PhilandoCastile’s murder was personal to me. He and I went to the same High School, and we continue to honor his memory. His charity still raises money for children to who have school lunch debt, because Philando provided for those same children before he was #MurderedByPolice.
#PhilandoCastile’s killer was not convicted of his murder. Irrespective of the circumstances, few of the perpetrators of police murder are even charged with a crime. Those #MurderedByPolice rarely see any justice.
Racial injustice has been sustained by narratives of fear & anger, argues #BryanStevenson. "To fight against those narratives we need other narratives." Educate yourself on injustice & the systematic criminalization of blackness through these Peabody winning & nominated programs.

An experience from a couple years ago has never been far from my mind throughout all this. When I was on the PTO of my children’s school, we organized a fun-run as a fundraiser. We invited community members to show up—the mayor, the fire dept. and the police, etc. And they did.
The mayor ran laps with the kids, the fire department brough a truck, and the police...well, first a K9 unit showed up but that wasn’t all. We also got a huge armored vehicle driven by officers dressed in what I’d characterize as military gear—body armor, etc.
Suffice it to say the presentation was not friendly neighborhod police officer. Very different from the K9. The officers were friendly, and their gear was, of course, popular with the kids in exactly the same way an F15 landing in the school’s garden would have been popular.

This book has been a decade in the making. In the 2010s, I taught brilliant students @MorganStateU and @BowieState how to make news using only smartphones. I never imagined that by 2014, when Ferguson rose up, that Black people would use these devices for survival.
