Philippine senators have called for an investigation into the security implications of China’s part ownership of the national energy grid after officials said engineers in Beijing could plunge the entire country into darkness with the flick of a switch.
The State Grid Corporation of China holds a 40 per cent stake in the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP), a private consortium which bagged the franchise in 2009 to run the power lines.

The USCGC Stratton (WMSL-752) arrived in Palawan on Wednesday for the Sama-Sama exercises, said Philippine Coast Guard spokesperson Capt. Arman Balilo. The Sama-Sama is an annual activity of the Philippines and US designed to undertake complex maritime training.
This is the second deployment of a US Coast Guard ship in Philippine waters in six months. Last May, the Philippine and US coast guards conducted exercises near Scarborough Shoal.

A standoff between Vietnamese & Chinese forces has been going on for weeks near an oil-rich area within Vietnam’s exclusive economic zone. The same activity was seen in May 2019, when a Chinese vessel patrolled waters near Luconia Shoals off the coast of Malaysia’s Sarawak State.
Asked if Vietnam’s move should serve as a model for the Philippines to address the West Philippine Sea dispute, Presidential Spokesman Salvador Panelo said: “It means also that Vietnam is risking an armed hostility between the two countries and risking the lives of their people.”
