Over last 20years, people are not eating more, nor exercising less but still becoming #obese finds this recent study. In below thread, i explain key mechanism of #obesity postulated in this paper & what you can do to break this cycle. #HealthyLiving #gutmicrobiome #MedTwitter Image
First let me share the full paper before i summarize the key points from same: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/35460220/
#Obesity prevalence among US adults has soared from 14% to 42% since 1980, but mean calorie intake has not changed much in population. In fact, people are eating less relative to their body sizes. This finding was confirmed in paper using multiple databases

1. Replacing just 9 minutes (per day) of sedentary behavior (SB) by moderate-vigorous #PhysicalActivity (MVPA) results in better #cognition scores over long-term in middle aged people.
MVPA time was derived using a step cadence of ≥100
#exercise #dementia
dx.doi.org/10.1136/jech-2…
2. Possible physiological explanations underlying a direct role for MVPA in supporting cognition include *Acute increases in cerebral perfusion,
*Growth factor release such as brain-derived neurotrophic factor,
*Hippocampal neurogenesis.
3. Lastly, MVPA, when attained by structured exercise, involves some degree of self-motivation, planning and social interaction, which are all factors considered to be cognitively stimulating.

#PhysicalActivity and #brain health in patients with atrial fibrillation

1. Vascular brain lesions, such as ischemic infarcts, are common among patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) and are associated with impaired cognitive function.
#MedTwitter #neurotwitter #dementia
2. In a recent study, effects of physical activity and regular exercise on brain infarcts, brain volume and cognition were looked at.
Reference: doi.org/10.1111/ene.15…
3. In AF patients, regular exercise was associated with a lower prevalence of ischemic infarcts and of moderate to severe white matter disease, with larger brain volume, and with better cognitive performance.

Runners, take it easy, if you aren't able to match your pre-covid level performance

1. #running, like every #PhysicalActivity, got severely impacted during #COVID19 pandemic. Several runners couldn't keep to their training and as a result, aren't able to match pre-covid fitness.
2. Finishes in #endurance and #ultra endurance #running (UER) decreased significantly during the pandemic, with an almost 11-fold decrease in endurance running and 5-fold decrease in UER.
This resulted in lesser opportunities for #Training.
Ref: doi.org/10.3390%2Fmedi…
3. Covid-19 lockdown has negatively impacted the fitness level
The COVID-19 lockdown reduced 1000 meter running and pull-up performances by 11% and 24% respectively, among Chinese college men.

🚨 New PhD Publication

Delighted to share this systematic review and meta-analysis on the acute effects of interrupting prolonged sitting 🪑 with standing and light-intensity walking 🚶🏼‍♂️on biomarkers of cardiometabolic health

Open Access @SportsMedicineJ: link.springer.com/article/10.100… ImageImage
📍 The meta-analytical component of this review found both standing and walking breaks significantly ⬇️ postprandial glucose metabolism

📍 However, walking 🚶🏼‍♂️ elicited a significantly greater attenuation in postprandial glucose compared to prolonged sitting and standing breaks
📍Light-intensity walking 🚶🏼‍♂️ breaks were also shown to significantly improve postprandial insulin compared to prolonged sitting and standing breaks

📍But intermittent bouts of standing showed no significant effect on postprandial insulin compared to prolonged sitting 🪑

Hello all! I am excited to present “Time to move from “push” to “pull”: A collaborative process for implementing movement behaviour curricula in undergraduate medical education”
- Tami Morgan, Queen’s University @QueensSKHS @Queensu
3rd year PhD Candidate
#MCGConf2021CP
If you research or practice #PhysicalActivity in #MedEd, you may recall a number of “calls to action” issued over the years, “pushing” for medical schools to add physical activity to their overextended curricula—for more, see @CmejEditor editorial below & Part B soon in 12(5)
These calls to action have recommended that new objectives and learning hours be added to the curriculum, when medical educators have stated that they do not have time. Unsurprisingly, few medical schools have sustainably implemented physical activity in their curricula.

The relationships between rugby union, and health and well-being: a scoping review 🏉

A Thread - please feel free to share! #RugbyAndHealth

1/n
Why do this study?

Majority of research has focused on link between rugby and injuries/concussion, with no 'big-picture' scientific overview of the potential relationships between rugby, and health and wellbeing

#RugbyAndHealth
We wanted to provide this overview so that players/parents etc could make evidence-informed decisions around participation, and to identify key areas where research is needed that would provide insights in the future

Year 2 of my #PhD when I was atvthe peak of my #PhysicalActivity and #fitness! This was the time when anything felt acheivable 😀
Loved my #hair that I had grown since the start of my PhD! This was #onceinalifetime thing for me to do! I donated 12’ to @locksoflove #cancersurvivor
Then the #science #reality and #depression hit me! It was the most unimaginable experience! It’s easy to brush off when other people say what depression entails, but the #experience was very profound and physically devastating! I noticed the smallest things around me differently!
At the end of year 5, with the help of many #people I beat the #depression! Ofcourse I had occasional flairs from that #experience. But the #rockbottom was something else! In a way I’m #glad I experienced it ad I truly cared about my PhD #research. @OpenAcademics @AcademicChatter

As its the first day of #WorldAlzMonth, I thought I'd give a brief overview of work I've done in collaboration with @BAM_Research.

My research focuses on improving how we diagnose and care for people with #dementia.

I use #gait analysis and #wearables to meet these aims (1/n).
My first step was to find out if people with #dementia have unique signatures of #gait impairment (i.e. Unique walking patterns).

My review revealed that gait may be useful to identify dementia but we didn't know enough about gait in dementia subtypes.

content.iospress.com/articles/journ…
With @BAM_Research, I set up the GaitDem study, which examined if #gait would be a useful marker for differential diagnosis of #Alzheimers disease and #Lewy body #dementia.

Using gold standard techniques, we found early evidence that gait may be useful.
