Individuals with persisting symptoms (ie, symptom duration >4 weeks) should be evaluated with a MULTIMODAL CLINICAL ASSESSMENT including the use of standardized and validated symptom rating scales. 2/
The potential long-term effects of Sports Related Concussion & repetitive head impacts (RHI) are areas of ongoing public health interest and concern among both healthcare professionals and the general public. 3/

Mid-foot bone stress injuries can be tricky to manage.

People often make the mistake of treating them as an ankle injury.

To achieve successful outcomes it is vital to challenge the foot and be progressive through an isolate then integrate approach.

🧵on our rationale 1/11
Footballer - Midfoot bone stress injury.

Emergency Departments in Australia are starting to get completely overwhelmed in every state. I don’t have all the answers on how to fix this, but...one measure that could relieve some pressure if Medicare is prepared to reverse 3 decades of bad policy….1/🧵
In Australia, almost 30% of Emergency Department presentations are musculoskeletal/injury related slhd.nsw.gov.au/rpa/start/pdf/…
This % appears to be higher than in analogous countries like UK, USA and NZ, where musculoskeletal presentations are at or less than 20% ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/P… boneandjointburden.org/docs/T6A.2.1.p…

Six reasons to assess the cranial nerves in the MSK clinic.

A thread 🧵

Reason 1.
You assess and manage patients with neck pain/ headache/orofacial symptoms
#Physio #Physiotherapy #PhysicalTherapy
Reason 2.
You routinely assess neurological function when you encounter
1. Distal symptoms in the upper limb
2. Distal symptoms in the lower limb
It is logical therefore to do the same when it comes to the neck/head/face
Reason 3.
You will see patients who complain of post trauma/insidious onset dizziness/nausea/visual disturbances
... which may or may not be linked to CN dysfunction.
CN testing should form part of your routine risk assessment. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/34182898/

1/ So here is the final result on the Cranial Nerves poll.

>50% responded that they were not taught CN’s at University

In addition 56% who WERE taught it suggested they were not comfortable acting on the findings.
2/ It is worth reflecting on the fact that most trained PT’s will assess neurological function in suspected upper limb and lower limb neurological dysfunction ... BUT NOT routinely in the cervical-cranial region.
3/ For a profession that positions itself as able ‘First Contact Practitioners’ for MSK conditions, that HAS to to be an #AFI

Serious adverse events related to cervical-cranial neurovascular dysfunction = Vision loss, Stroke or Death

Having spent the last 2 weeks in a #COVID_19 follow up clinic, based in a Find and Treat van I have more learning to share.
1: There is no better way to get to know your colleagues than sharing the experience of running a clinic out of a van.
2: Many many people are still experiencing symptoms even 6-8 weeks after having COVID.
3: Ongoing symptoms include; breathlessness, fatigue, ⬇️ ex tol, low mood, anxiety, palpitations, cough, chest tightness, pain. Some still have CXR changes, desaturation at rest/ on exertion.
4: Many feel they could not return to work full time.
5: The psychological impact is high. Anxiety about getting COVID again, or infecting loved ones or in general about their recovery. Many are traumatised by the experience having had COVID and coping with symptoms at home.
