Marc Schiltz @marcschiltz1 from @ScienceEurope talks to us about Plan S, launched in 2018, an initiative for #OpenAccess publishing
#RoadtoOpenAccess
"It was clear that the transition to #OpenAccess had to be a priority and we couldn't wait 20 more years" - @marcschiltz1 from @ScienceEurope on #PlanS
"If COVID-19 was important enough to lift embargo periods, why not for other topics like cancer as well?" - @marcschiltz1 from @ScienceEurope

radiofrance.fr/franceinter/so…

As I was going through papers and packing while trying to find a place to live, I came across something that my Father wrote many years ago.

WHEN IT LOOKS LIKE I HAVE FAILED

'LORD, are you trying to tell me something?
For .. failure does not mean I'm a failure;
It does mean ... I have not yet succeeded.
Failure does not mean ...I have accomplished nothing;
It does mean ...I HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING.
Failure does not mean ... I have been a fool;
It does mean ... I HAD ENOUGH FAITH TO EXPERIMENT..
Failure does not mean ...I don't have it;
It does not mean I am inferior.
It does mean...I am not perfect.
Failure does not mean...I've waisted my time.
It does mean ... I HAVE AN EXCUSE TO START OVER.
Failure does not mean ...I should give up;

1/ Q: My teen seems to needs more independence. I feel terrible about all the missed events this year.. Would it help if we relaxed our rules a bit?

A: Yes and no. While social life is critical for teens' development, it must be done safely.
Read on for tips to help them cope:
2/
1-Encourage social activity. But, emphasize that we don't know everything yet about the #virus and we don't know if their friends are practicing hygiene standards to the same level that they are right now.
3/ Some teens are taking socially distant walks, meeting in open spaces with masks, and even meeting in garages to listen to music. It may be worth discussing low risk activities they can engage in while still feeling connected to their friends.

1/10 It’s hard to shut my mind off in the face of #COVID19. As #AcuteCareSurgeons our day/night/weekend jobs taking care of #injured patients and #patients needing #EmergencySurgery for abdominal and soft tissue diseases do not dissipate.
2/10 Yet we are also experts in #CriticalCare and need to prepare to care for patients w/ #respiratoryfailure and #shock due to #COVID19. We are implementing #plans based on the little evidence that exists while trying to stay #safe, #healthy, and #resilient.
3/10 We step into the trauma bay as others threaten to shoot our patient (but police can protect us). We do operations where rHepC/HIV risk is high (but PEP can protect us). We don't shy away from blood, feces or dead flesh up to our eyeballs (but we have #PPE to protect us).

In the past months, we at @GlobalYAcademy have started to improve the visibility of young global scientists. I'll starting sharing more about what I learned through this about #digitization #academies #wikipedia and the visibility of researchers. Here's a picture of NYAs
#gyawiki
NYAs are national young academies. There are around 50 of them, some have a long and prominent history, some have just started *this week*.

Have a look globalyoungacademy.net/national-young…
NYAs are great (*I'm biased, as Executive Member of the GYA... :):
- scientific excellence is understood both in conventional terms, but also in terms of societal impact
- terms are limited. You have 4-5 years to *really* do work
- are typically very diverse! (@WikiWomenInRed)

I've been thinking about #PlanS a lot since the announcement. I've been reflecting on my experience with the foundation's policy implementation. Random thoughts:
"Whether the plan succeeds or fizzles out hangs on how the funders implement the new policy." sciencebusiness.net/news/hope-and-…
I agree & think that there is enough funder experience in #openaccess policy implementation to successfully implement this. While it's important to critically review each new policy development the community that wants to see change really needs to support any effort to change
It can be scary being first in something - however it can also reaffirm that need for change. So far I haven't seen many examples of open access being a detriment to research. For PlanS this isn't a single entity, but an entire coalition, which is quite impressive.
