In 2010, 13 of Russia's ethnic republics had presidents, before a law required them to change the title. As of 2021, only Tatarstan's remains. What can this tell us about identity and center-region relations in #Russia? 🧵
#polisci #Eurasia
Quite a lot, I suggest! For one thing, a common perception of post-Yeltsin Russia is of a dominant centralizing government and compliant regions. In reality, there's more bargaining and contestation than this suggests.
Both Moscow and Kazan have treated the issue of Tatarstan's presidency quite delicately, even when the title contradicted federal law.

#BackToSchool With all the investigations and coverage of House/Senate Committees, it’s important to review how it all works, how it’s structured & what it all means. What do Congressional Committees do? How are members selected?

In 1885, Woodrow Wilson famously observed, “Congress in session is Congress on public exhibition, whilst Congress in its committee-rooms is Congress at work” (Wilson, 1885). This statement is no less true today. 2/18 #demswork4usa #Congress
Committees are the lifeblood of Congress. They develop legislation, oversee executive agencies and programs, and conduct investigations.
There are different types of committees that are responsible for particular aspects of congressional work. 3/18 #demswork4usa #Congress

🚨 If the economy suffers with Brexit, will Leave voters care? New WP with @ProfJaneGreen on wealth, insurance and #Brexit. A Thread.

#PoliSci Image
Until now, research suggested that poorer voters wanted Brexit, no matter the costs, and richer voters chose Remain.
But there’s a lot of heterogeneity in Leave and Remain votes. And a substantial % of strong eurosceptics voted to Remain.

Ep 2 of "Suspicious Activity" (a podcast on the #FinCENFiles by @pineapplemedia and @BuzzFeedNews) recounts how George Osborne lobbied US regulators NOT to prosecute senior execs at HSBC...

... which is a brilliant illustration of "structural power" as developed by folks like @PepperCulpepper and @RaphaelJReinke, as well as @Cornelia_Woll's "collective power of inaction".

Check out the podcast and then follow-up with some further reading from #polisci! (a 🧵)
Culpepper & Reinke (2014) use the idea of "structural power" to compare and contrast the UK and US bank bailouts in 2008.

@MIT @grassrootza Thanks @MIT for sharing!

TL:DR? Thread!

1/ The @grassrootza pilot occurred before the coronavirus outbreak. Yet results from @mitgovlab show how #WhatsApp can be effective for organizers to move training + people development online when face-to-face interaction isn’t possible Image
@MIT @grassrootza @MIT_SHASS @azomer @MITPoliSci @AmandlaMobi @Kmoeti @MobilisationLab @CivicTechAfrica @mySociety @MITxonedX 2 / Piloted over five classes, the course reached more than 40 distance learners in #SouthAfrica, largely in urban and peri-urban areas near Johannesburg and Durban. What did the research show?

Enjoy a sunny Sunday afternoon with @FairVoteCanada, listening to @Arne_JJ from Germany, speaking about how #ProportionalRepresentation has worked, how it makes a difference in their politics and policies. Really interesting stuff! #polisci #ElectoralReform
(A thread)
It's so refreshing hearing about how parties work together, through honest and transparent agreements, collaboration and power sharing. Coming from North America/#cdnpoli, this level of maturity is such a foreign concept. Kudos to Germany!
@FairVoteCanada #ElectoralReform
.@Arne_JJ : Germany's #ProportionalRepresentation system has encouraged a diversity of voices, fair dist of seats, civil discourse, and a wide spectrum of views contributing to policy discussions.
(Again, so foreign a concept for #cdnpoli.)

Hey #polisci Twitter! @jmlisin, @kmmunger and I analyzed you! We found a lot of interesting things. osf.io/dvkwt/ 1/18
Late in 2018, we identified the universe of political scientists working at PhD-granting institutions and determined which of them were on Twitter. We then scraped them in the spring of 2019. 2/18
#polisci Twitter is predominantly male, tenured, and liberal, consistent with the discipline in general. However, women and tenure-track scholars are more likely to be on Twitter than men and tenured scholars. 3/18

1/ What follows is the story of why I will not be attending #MPSA2020. Here, I discuss the aftermath of my #MeTooPoliSci disclosure, which I discussed last year: bit.ly/GillMeToo. The #thread is long, so please bear with me. #MPSAfail
2/ When I first saw the editorial statement on the @AJPS_Editor website in April 2018, I was devastated. In that statement, my harasser told the #polisci community that what I said about him harassing me was untrue. bit.ly/BuzzfeedStory1
3/ He also indicated that his cooperation with the ongoing investigations with the @MPSAnet, @michiganstateu, and @UMich was an attempt to clear his name.

This afternoon at #SPSA2018, I was on a #CWC panel about mentoring across genders. Below, I'll include my comments from the panel. In it, I speak candidly about my #gradschool #metoo moment. @SPSAwomen @SPSAwomen 1/n
In many ways, graduate school is designed to make students feel like impostors. It's a common experience, but it can be particularly damaging for members of groups that have traditionally lacked access to the higher ranks of our discipline. I’ll focus on women here. 2/n
For these folks, the feeling that they have “faked” or “charmed” their way into graduate school (or the #tenuretrack, etc.) can override objective evidence of their own diligence, intellect, and merit. 3/n
