#InternationalWorkersDay honors the immigrant organizers unfairly convicted of conspiracy for participating in a wave of worker protests known as the Great Upheaval throughout the 1800s.

CW: Abuse, #PoliceViolence

THE NICEST FREAKINā€™ FAMILY just moved in across the street 3 weeks ago. Single mom, four kids, 7 mths pregnant as a surrogate for her best friend, Iā€™ll be calling her Mama cause sheā€™s the cutest preggo lady I have ever seen, 5ā€™1ā€ and like 110 lbs.
Our neighborhood is...kinda rough. Poor people, lots of drugs, but more or less everyone leaves everyone else alone and gets along fine. This family moves in, I immediately go over to say hey, and turns out Mama and I get along GREAT. NICE people. Fab kids.

As #BlackLivesMatter protests sweep across the UK we are told that #racism & #PoliceViolence is not as bad here. Well it was only luck that meant the #MetPolice didn't murder 62-y/o #MillardScott in April:

Also in April a #WestMidlandsPolice officer was filmed beating a young black boy to the ground and kicking him - another incident that could have resulted in a death. The #police & the state are institutionally #racist in the UK too. bbc.co.uk/news/uk-englanā€¦ /2
And the stench of #racism spreads to the right-wing of @UKLabour too where @Keir_Starmer is blocking action against racist staff, MPs & others like @EmilieOldknow & @IainMcNicol exposed in the #LabourReport. And he has the gall to #TakeAKnee. Sickening. /3

(hella long) THREAD on #bailreform & #PoliceViolence
Hereā€™s the deal: last year NY passed bail reform legislation that mandated pretrial freedom for 90% of folks going through the system. It was a huge win for black people, poor people & the movement to end pretrial jailing.
It also SIGNIFICANTLY checked the power of law enforcement to use pretrial jailing as a tool to terrorize black NYers. The reforms meant that tens of thousands of people now couldnā€™t be jailed and held hostage just based on an arrest.
Pretrial jailing is a direct extension of police power. The #ExoneratedFive, #KaliefBrowder, #LayleenPolanco are all examples of black people who suffered horrible violence and tremendous consequences from being locked up pretrial as a result of racist cops & racist arrests.

June is #PrideMonth around the world, a time when we honour the historic and ongoing struggles of the LGBTQ* community.

Pride has blossomed into a colourful celebration, with parades, festivities, and overwhelming support in communities throughout our province. (1/5)
But Pride wasnā€™t always so celebratory. The first pride parade was organized 50 years ago this month to mark the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall Riots in New York City. Those protests were led by queer and trans people, many of them people of colour... (2/5)
...fighting to end #policeviolence against their community.

Our Pride celebrations this year take place while people across the United States and here in Canada are marching to protest another act of police violence: the brutal killing of #GeorgeFloyd in Minneapolis. (3/5)

Iā€™ve been thinking about power in systems. In medicine. In police forces. Government. Why there havenā€™t been mass defections. Why do we stay when the system harms? 1/
The System is made of people. We comprise It. Without us, it ceases to be. Strikes me as a kind of delusion that we donā€™t denounce and leave even when The System blatantly exploits and harms. 2/
The harm, the moral distress, it touches everyone. We see it daily. And I wonder if we donā€™t abandon these systems because we ourselves on the deepest level seek to gain power from within. Weā€™ve been conditioned to believe that is the goal. 3/

THREAD: #PoliceViolence in response to #GeorgeFloydprotest reminds me of use-of-force probs during the Northern Ireland Troubles, where indiscriminate use of ā€œnon-lethalā€ wpns like baton rounds fueled violence. I wrote on this a while back. 1/ academia.edu/43012392/Drohaā€¦
Baton rounds originated in the British Empire; wooden rounds were prepared for use in Hong Kong in the 1960s. With the #NorthernIreland Troubles, officials looked for a ā€œnon-lethalā€ weapon with more deterrent effect (i.e. more dangerous) than tear gas. 2/
But they thought wooden rounds were too dangerous for use against fellow white people, so they developed rubber rounds designed for ā€œprecisionā€ use against riot leaders/instigators. Problem was, rubber billets werenā€™t accurate enough for this. 3/

40 million unemployed Americans. Months of isolation after a botched pandemic response. A hated president who actively antagonizes hurt and angry people who just watched another black man murdered by police. America is a powder keg with an arsonist in the White House.
Peace has to be a pathway to progress. If peaceful, non-violent protest continues to lead to nowhere, I fear we will see more violence.

Cities need to show frustrated Americans that police will be held accountable when they murder. People are sick and tired of this shit.
If you want peace, work for justice.
