1. One line that seems to divide expert advice on how the West should behave in the #RussiaUkraineWar is that most area students recommend more military support for #Ukraine while many #IR & #politicalscience professors propose accommodation of #Russia.

2. Many generalists' underlying argument, whether im- or explicitly indicated, is that #EasternEurope specialists suffer from professional distortion. An emotions overload weakens their political judgement. Thus the generalists' texts are often educational rather than analytical.
3. #Areaexperts, in contrast, suspect the #generalists of suffering from a lack of empirical and contextual information. They are afraid that the generalists neither properly know nor fully understand (or are even not interested in) key peculiarities of the #RussianUkrainianWar.

We examine the developments of political science in Czechia and the post-communist CEE region in the past two decades through the lenses of two competing perspectives: *convergence* and *dependency*. [2/16]
The convergence perspective favored by liberal discourses assumes that “catching up” with excellent European political science is a question of time and effort invested since the academic market is flat and meritocratic. [3/16]
#SocialScience in general & #PoliticalScience in particular are failing SOCIETY & civilisation itself, because, in overreaction to the evils of Nazism, they lost their way, or rather, they failed to find it, & are thus now leading us towards a precipice.
It is not too late for the present generation of social science academics to correct the mistakes made by their predecessors. But first they have to recognise them.
In a misconceived, knee-jerk, #NeverAgain response to the Nazis having manipulated & abused German tribalism for their own evil purposes, human tribalism itself was demonised, which is like demonising male sexuality for its role in rape.

This observation by @Yascha_Mounk really touches a nerve with me, and so I'm going to tell a story of #PoliticalScience and #academia in the early 90s as my run-in with this phenomenon. /1
@Yascha_Mounk I began my career by studying Soviet civil-military relations. It required careful textual analysis, in part because we didn't know what was going on in a closed society. We were doing research of *discovery*, not causal analysis, because we didn't have enough *facts*. /2
So I took my dissertation and wrote a research proposal for a book. I talked about it with my new department and some colleagues. They asked formalistic scientific questions like "what's your independent variable?" as if that had meaning in a deep case study. /3
