After a long dry spell, the rains are finally here. When I started farming, the first thing I did was build a water storage pond to help manage the long and unpredictable periods of droughts.

Here is my step-by-step guide on how build a pond:
#KyavitiChronicles
#1. Identify the location
Pick a spot at the highest elevation. It should not be a place that easily floods, has a good source of water during the rains and is away from trees or other structures that could drop debris into the pond.

#2. Plan the pond size and shape
This should be based on your water needs. How much water do you need to do your farming activities all year round especially during dry spells? How much space do you have to accommodate a pond? #Buildingapond

In order for #nature to thrive, we need to create a mosaic of habitats nationwide and adopt this principal in our own #gardens. From woodland to scrub, #meadows to short grass and #ponds to wetlands. A variety of habitats is best for species diversity. 🧵
Even in a 50sqm garden, we can have most of the above mentioned habitats but on a smaller scale. Small trees such as Rowan, Crab Apple and Elder can work really well in small areas without getting too big or casting too much shade.
Moving down from this, we can add shrubs such as Hazel, Alder Buckthorn, Guelder Rose, Dog rose, Wild Privet and Holly which will provide so many flowers for insects and nesting potential for birds in the spring. As well as larval food plants for moths and butterflies.

Though I am really glad that #arsenic contamination of #groundwater in India, and specially #WestBengal is getting the attention it deserves, there is a major issue that needs wider discussion.
There is a simplistic argument that arsenic naturally occurs in the #Gangetic belt, the author uses the term “#geological curse”. If this is the case, why is heavy #arsenic contamination being reported from #Jharkhand and #Chattisgarh in Central India?
A possible answer to that may be traced to this MIT paper that was published in @NatureGeosci on #anthropogenic influence on #groundwater #arsenic contamination in #Bangladesh nature.com/articles/ngeo6…
