Did you know that the References are the part of a paper most often overlooked? 😳 It's not only damaging science but also making desk-rejection more likely.

Here's a 9-point references checklist for you to bookmark!

A thread. 🧵

#PostDoc #newPI #PIchat
✅1: Did you read every study you are referencing?

Make sure that the studies you cite are actually substantiating your statements in the manuscript.
✅2: Are you always citing primary sources to support specific claims?

It's okay to cite reviews for more broader statements but when you are referring to a specific finding, always cite the paper that reported it first.

The German Federal Minister @starkwatzinger's amendment proposals to the Academic Fixed-Term Contract Act are an absolute slap in the face to everyone who's been invested in calling out current issues with German #academia and suggesting genuine solutions. #WissZeitVG 1/ Slogan from the ministry's webpage "Gute Arbeitsbedingu
For a start, much of the proposed "reform" is just hot air. E.g., Encouraging universities to give #PhD candidates an initial 3-year contract: Thankfully, most already do this and those that don't aren't going to be won over by a new "it would be nice if you could..." clause. 2/ Qualifizierungsphase vor der Promotion (R1): Ziel: Wir schaf
Nothing about changing the fact that the 6-year cap on #PhD contracts applies regardless of whether the contract is 50%, 75% or 100% FTE. Thus effectively confirming that doctoral researchers on part-time contract are expected to complete their PhDs in their free time or quit. 3/

As an academic writing coach, I see researchers make these 10 counter-intuitive productivity mistakes that get them LESS (not more) writing done.

A thread. 🧵

#PostDoc #newPI #PIchat
#1: Not prioritising rest

💤 Sleep, exercise and other ways to "rest" your brain will make you more creative and a better writer. Our brain needs time away from focused writing to process and build connections. Aim for 8-9 hours sleep, work-free weekends and regular vacations.
#2: Thinking you need to write every day

📆 Habits and consistency are necessary but if you can't fit writing into your schedule daily, you can still be a productive writer. One strategy that works for many is to write at the same time on certain days of the week.

Say goodbye to high #ArticleProcessingCharges!

Here is the ultimate guide to publishing your next paper for FREE: 🧵👇

1. DOAJ: Directory of Open Access Journals - 1) Go to DOAJ.org 2) Search for journals 3) Apply filter "Without: APCs"

After finding a journal, check if they're indexed or not.

I was surprised by the number and quality of articles I saw on DOAJ.
2. University Agreements: Your University may have an agreement with specific scientific journals to publish articles for FREE or at a reduced cost.

Check your University's website for details. @UofT, for example, has 100% waivers with 8 publishers:

The title of your paper is your shop front.

Here are 10 rules to write a compelling title for your scientific article.

A thread. 🧵

#AcademicChatter @TheStrugglingS4 #Postdoc
#1: The title should describe your main result

📌 Your reader will want to know what exactly the take-away message of your paper is.
#2: The title doesn't need to convey every detail

📚 Don't try to cram information into your title and don't try to communicate more than 1 key take-away in your title.

this thread sums up #academia so well. i hated so much of it, but kept telling myself the 10 % i love (the research) made up for the 90 % of shit the majority of the time.

i delayed leaving because of that 10 %.

#AcademicTwitter #phdchat #ucuRISING
leaving required a sort of mourning (appreciate this sounds dramatic); i was losing my identity as an academic

my skills and knowledge are so specialised who would even want me anyway?

why would i even want to lose what i have? i have academic freedom after all!!
then my planned redundancy went ahead even though we were eligible for furlough. my next plans (to go to Sweden) fell through because of the plague.

there were no jobs. i stopped being an academic by force. i thought i'd be miserable.

As an academic writing coach, here are the 5⃣ most common mistakes I see researchers make in their scientific papers.

🧵A thread.

#AcademicChatter #PostDoc
#1: Neglecting tension

Ever got told to "tell a story" in your article? Including an element of tension is how you do it!

✅ Clearly describe the problem that your study is solving
#2: Ignoring the broader perspective

It's easy to get bogged down in details when you're writing your paper, but it won't be obvious to your reader how your research relates to the field and society if you don't spell it out.

✅ Explain the broader implications of your research

Are you and your co-authors editing the abstract of your paper again and again before submitting to get it just perfect?

👇 Use this template instead and save yourself hoursss!

#PostDoc #ECRchat #AcademicChater
#1 Describe the broad problem your paper solves

😱 In 1 sentence, hook your reader describing a problem in your field that your research is contributing to solving. Every reader of the journal should understand this sentence.
#2 Provide context needed to understand your study

🌳 In 1-3 sentences, give the reader any background they need to understand the motivation of your study. Clearly state the specific problem that your study solves.

This is something I have experienced recently too, having had to advertise the same post-doc position FIVE times, and interview candidates on FOUR separate occasions
Here are my thoughts about this in a brief🧵1/n
I feel a big factor here is that #COVID19 & all the associated problems it caused for lab scientists has laid bare the precarious nature & short-termism of being a #PostDoc to #PhD students coming through the system & many have just decided "this is not for me"
2/n
The number of applicants was way down each time I advertised the #PostDoc position (and no where near the 36 that @Mad_Lancaster received!!)

Advice for #PhD students who want to become postdocs and stay in #academia:
- How to choose a lab for a postdoc
- How to prepare for an interview
- What to be careful about

[I was a happy postdoc at Stanford]

#AcademicTwitter #engineering #science
Initial steps:

1. Decide on how far you want to move away from your PhD topic. Keep in mind:
- If your #postdoc research is distant, you will need more time to gain expertise and do competitive work
- Diverse and strong(!) expertise can make you stand out during faculty interviews and help you establish unique research directions
- BUT: gaining a bit of expertise here and there will hardly give you any advantage in the end

(2 🧵) First of all; housing! I moved across the country sight unseen. This is the state of trying to rent near @UConn - now imagine doing this from far away during the pandemic like I did. I luckily found a place and now commute 1.5 hours 7 days a week for my research Image
(3🧵) I am externally funded on a prestigious fellowship (#NSFPRFB) and as a #disabledscientist had to go months without insurance and almost ran out of my life-saving medications. I am not included in our postdoctoral union and thus can't access certain on campus resources

Really chuffed to share our latest work from Sanjana Lab out in @nature today (nature.com/articles/s4158…).

(2/28) T cell therapies have shown the potential to cure patients from #cancer – but even in B cell cancers, relapses outnumber cures… One of the problems is limited T cell persistence. #celltherapy #CARTcell
(3/28) We wanted to find new genes (including genes never expressed in T cells) that could improve T cell persistence. Now, the question was: should we use #crispr activation or directly deliver target genes on a #lentivirus?

Really happy to see our paper led by @DaveyRachel1 just out in the #Forefront section of @AnalBioanalChem: rdcu.be/cEJN7

Improves a procedure to expose surrogate proteins to urban air (especially NO2, O3) to quantify changes in protein nitration ➡️ allergies, etc.
1/🧵 Image
2/ @DaveyRachel1 did a great job of quantifying & improving each step of the #bioanalytical procedure; ozone loss across PM filters, extraction & detection efficiencies, even good old analytical #FiguresOfMerit sensitivity & limit of detection.
rdcu.be/cEJN7 Image
3/ Possibly the most broadly useful piece is the data showing ozone loss across several filter types. The HEPA capsule scrubbed >60% of the ozone (bad if you're trying to quantify ozone). Kynar removed only 3%.
Important if using filter to remove PM, while quantifying O3 behind. Image

Hello friends! Before leaving this account, I'd like to share valuable insights & experiences I gained as PhD #student, #postdoc, and #newPI. These are on various aspects of science.

My insights are obviously not universal. Please take them with a 'big grain of salt'.
Open 🧵
#1. NEVER EVER write an email when overwhelmed by emotion. This is especially relevant when the emotion is anger, regardless of whether it is justified or not. When receiving bad / unpleasant news, it's best to let it rest AT LEAST 1-2 days before responding.
#2. In myself and in my scientific team members, I welcome every feeling/state (expressed with respect) EXCEPT BOREDOM.

A person that is bored has lost curiousity, and awareness of how little she/he knows of this AMAZING universe. There is always something great to learn!
