It's weekend and it's the end of the month. The #markets are closed.

So there is the perfect time to analyze the #momentum & relative #strength of the markets.

This information is relevant for all #investors, but especially for #trend #followers 📈📈📈

#marketresearch

🧵
The #momentum of the markets are one of the most powerful forces in the evolution of the #asset #prices.

The #reversion to the mean is the opposite force, which is equally powerful. Momentum works on a short and medium term (up to 3 to 5 years).
There is a ton of academic research related to the momentum and the benefits of using it and relative strength. But presenting it this is not the purpose of this #thread.

Relative strength is actually a comparison between the #momentum of two or more #markets.

#lithium carbonate breaks $510k yuan/ton which is $80k USD - almost a $10k increase in the last fortnight. A small thread on why this matters below for #electricvehicles and #lithium #mining stocks. Happy punting all.
#Spot #lithium traded as above is usually representative of tiny volumes at different districts in China. Could probably spend a whole thread describing lithium prices in different areas but that'd be a waste of time. Take away point is the volume is tiny but it's a trend.
The head price you see here is representative of what traders/chemical producers are getting for product sold typically to #cathode #producers who use the chemicals to create lithium batteries.

With respect to the data, #coreCPI (excluding volatile food and #energy components) came in at 0.6% month-over-month and at a high 6% year-over-year.
Meanwhile, headline #CPI data printed at a strong 0.6% month-over-month and came in at 7.5% year-over-year, the greatest increase over a 12-month period since February 1982.
Additionally, the @federalreserve’s favored measure of #inflation, #corePCE, increased 0.5% in December, bringing the year-over-year figure for the measure to 4.9%, as of that month.

With @StateBank_Pak releasing dissaggregated #trade data for December, we have a picture of the full 2021, which, despite #supply #chain disruptions worldwide, was 'good' for #Pakistan. Short thread below:
1\ #exports grew by 30.1% in 2021 w.r.t. 2020, with a strong pick up in merchandise, but also substantive in services.

#trade #Pakistan
2\ To be sure, in #real terms, #Pakistan's #exports remain below its local max in 2011. So, no 'record exports' if we talk real terms and not values.

Today’s #inflation report continued to reinforce the theme that gaudy #price gains are not standing in the way of demand.
It is a very rare time in history, in fact, most people operating in #markets haven’t seen this sort of demand outstripping supply in the real #economy in their careers, with some areas seemingly depicting a dynamic suggesting that “price is no object.”
Clearly, #inflation has been escalating for a number of months due to #shortages of supply in areas such as #housing, #commodities, semiconductors, new and used cars, etc., and those supply shortages are mostly still in place today.

The story about the German Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) was - and is - crucial for the central neoliberal narrative about the alleged self-regulation of prices through supply and demand.
But neither the narrative nor the german example matches reality: A #Thread
#prices
The neoliberal tale is widely acknowledged as truth - and goes like this:
In June 1948 Ludwig Erhard abolished all price controls. This unleashed the power of markets, started the German Wirtschaftswunder and enabled the social market economy.
But ...
2/
The German Wirtschaftswunder (economic miracle) was not unique. A lot of western economies experienced quite similar upswings, regardless their political regulations (in particular Italy, Japon and Austria – you notice sth.?)

India’s WPI #inflation stands at a whopping 14.2% - a 30-year high.

What’s fueling the price rise? (1/n)🧵
First things first - we’re talking inflation of ‘wholesale’ prices here. This isn’t ‘retail’ inflation that captures the prices facing the consumer. It essentially tracks factory gate prices - the price at which goods leave the factory for bulk sales.
And so it differs from the Consumer Price Index. For instance, the CPI would give more weightage to food because food prices make a hell of a lot of difference to the average consumer. But when it comes to wholesale, not so much.

For the first time in 14 years, the price of a #matchbox is being raised from Rs. 1 to Rs. 2 per unit.

But what’s behind the sudden price hike?

Thread.👇 (1/n)
Let’s get straight to the math. It takes about 14 raw materials to make matchboxes and as it turns out, these costs are spiraling out of control.

Per Kg costs:
~Red phosphorus Rs. 425 -Rs.810
~Wax Rs. 58 - Rs. 80
~Outer box board Rs.36 - Rs.55
~Inner box board Rs.32 - Rs.58
Then there’s the surging price of paper, sulfur, potassium chlorate.

Who knew making a matchbox takes that much chemistry, right?

With respect to today’s #inflation data, core #CPI (excluding volatile food and energy components) came in at 0.24% month-over-month and 4.04% year-over-year and was driven higher by strong increases in the #rent components, which have a tendency to be persistent.
Further, headline #CPI data printed at a solid 0.41% month-over-month and came in at 5.38% year-over-year.
Today’s data witnessed declines in used vehicles, #airfares and lodging, which should temper #market concerns somewhat, but we anticipate that these components are likely to see #prices bounce back in the months to come.

In August we saw #inflation growth moderate further, for the second consecutive month, at least relative to the impressive rate of growth in #prices witnessed around mid-year.
Core #CPI (excluding volatile food and energy components) came in at 0.10% month-over-month and 3.98% year-over-year, which was considerably less than the consensus forecast and was driven higher by #shelter components.
Meanwhile, headline #CPI data printed at a solid 0.27% month-over-month and came in at 5.20% year-over-year.

👉 Indian GE (graphite electrode) prices for 600mm UHP grade is currently assessed at INR 280,000- 300,000/t ($3,800 – 4,100/t) and for 450mm HP grade prices are at INR 425,000/t ($5,800/t). Image
👉 It is anticipated that GE prices will increase due to a rise in imported needle coke prices from the Jul’21 quarter, which, in turn, has moved up on escalating raw material (coal-tar pitch and crude oil) costs. Image

In our latest @BlackRock Market Insights commentary we argue that #inflation’s role in the #economic order can be misinterpreted, and therefore that #policy seeking to achieve positive ends can ironically become the means by which those ends are undone: bit.ly/3fyLn4O
Today, policymakers face a set of increasingly critical choices that could end up shaping our quality of life for a generation. Changes to the #Fed’s #inflation framework, without being fully debated, may ironically end up exacerbating the very problems they seek to alleviate.
One might paraphrase the #Fed mandate of full employment and stable prices as being intended “to preserve the purchasing power of as many as possible” – or, to create the best quality of life for the community. So, how do varying levels of #inflation impact that mandate?
