Unlike rulers who tried to cling to power even when the end of British rule was evident, #BalasahebPantpratinidhi handed over the reins of the state to the people much earlier in an experiment inspired by #MahatmaGandhi. He also helped freedom fighters & revolutionaries.
In a sense, #BalasahebPantpratinidhi was among the reformist kings who tried to birth welfare states in colonial India. He was also associated with one of the most popular forms of exercises—the suryanamaskars.

I recently spoke at @verainstitute‘s 60th Anniversary Gala and shared some of my story of how I got my first chance to be the person I wanted to be in prison. Here’s more about my journey and what it says about “chances” for system-impacted people.
I talked about needing to prove myself right. But I didn’t care what other people thought. It was always for myself. No one should have to prove their humanity for basic needs. We all deserve a quality education, regardless of zip code, race, or incarceration status.

Today I was called to the elementary school office to pick up my 10yo son. He choked another boy during an episode of rough-housing that turned into a fight. I was told he was being suspended for that day + one extra. (Vacation from school!) #LongThread 1/17
The new Vice Principal looked up my son's record + reminded him of the long list of previous bad choices he has made since kindergarten + let him know that these mistakes would follow him through middle school, high school + impact his future. 2/17

Bharuch General Hospital is the largest govt-run COVID-19 center in #Gujarat’s Bharuch district. On 16 April, there was only 1 doctor & 5 nurses. The hospital had 72 patients almost all of whom had severe #COVID19 symptoms. @chahat_rana1 @thecaravanindia

The reason why we even have federal prisons or a federal justice system at all today is because that was the way the US government was able to criminalize Native people/territories and begin weakening tribal sovereignty. The “feds” are actually a fairly recent invention.
And federal prisons and incarceration were literally invented as a way to control and criminalize not only Indigenous individual people but Indigenous sovereign nations as well. Leavenworth Federal Prison was the first ever federal prison and was opened in 1896.
With the introduction of the Major Crimes Act of 1885, US criminal laws expanded to all Native peoples on and off the reservations, increasing the federal government’s reach into Indian crime in Indian Territory, policing people for behaviors that may have been perfectly legal.
