1/12 For the past 2-3 months, I've been seriously exploring a product idea based on research papers and my management experience. I've recently had to make a strategic decision for the direction of this product. Here's how I did it. #ProductDevelopment #StrategyInPublic
2/12 I initially identified 2-3 competitors who were using less than optimal technology, providing no to low user benefits, No serious threat. So, I decided to talk to users and understand if my idea solves a real pain point. User interviews showed enough interest!
3/12 Recently, I discovered a serious competitor—a recently launched startup. They seemed to have out-executed me with a larger team, successful beta on Product Hunt, pre-seed funding, and strong YC network. The challenge was real! @agazdecki you always talk about this .

The product lifecycle constantly evolves. Keeping everyone informed w/ a product roadmap is critical to getting the 360-degree buy-in you need to position your product for long-term success.

A product roadmap is a shared, living document that outlines the vision & direction of your product throughout its lifecycle. It articulates what you are building & why. It also lays out a strategy for delivering value & serves as a plan for executing this product strategy.

2/13
It’s the product manager’s responsibility to build & manage a live roadmap that is fluid & resilient. They must convince stakeholders why the investment makes sense, obtain buy-in from inside & outside the org, set expectations, & generate excitement about what’s to come.

The Counter-Intuitive Nature of Software Engineering & Product Development, A Thread:

I had a 1:1 meeting with @jgehtland a couple of weeks back, and I'm not sure exactly how we landed on a weird topic and a message behind a famous "Programming T-Shirt."

🧵 🧵🧵 Image
Funny enough, when Justin was trying to remember the exact T-Shirt's quote during our call, he said the following:

--> "Hours of Typing can save you Minutes of Thinking." instead of "Weeks of Programming can save you Hours of Planning."

Close enough!
He also mentioned a great quote he learned since he started to work with Brazilians at Nubank:

--> "Devagar, que tenho pressa."

Before we get into it I just want to say that this is a collection of my lessons/mistakes & years experiences.

This is not to be used as a copy & paste, but more of a guideline & game that you must contextualize for your situation.

Extract the principles in the text.

Cool!
1. This is key. The first step is accepting that you're going to be in this for the long haul. This is why it doesn't help selling fads unless finding new fads is your strategy.

Know alot about the market but more importantly the [Psychology] of how people in it consume.

Last week I attended a session on Cognitive Traps while building a product by @paraschopra and I could relate to every bias. Here is a thread on those biases. Read to know how to build products for end-users and not your own satisfaction.
👇
Trap 1 : Confirmation bias - We hear what we want to hear.
While building a product, we often have a solution in mind, and get too focussed on making it work, rather than focusing on the actual problem, and looking at it from all angles.
Google is a great way to do confirmation bias. We'll always find something to support our assumption. We do not focus on things that don't support the assumption and label them as outliers. We are not motivated to seek truth, rather be correct all the time.

Here's how I create products. When an idea comes to me, I type it in a phone app and spend days or even months just chewing on it. I don't hold any brainstorms and I don't develop any vision boards. I just chew.
Over time, I add points to the idea, teasing it out. Finally, I take pen to paper and flesh out the idea in my journal, just to see it better. I'm not a visual person, so I prefer words to diagrams.
Finally, when I think I've figured out how the idea can make money (and never before), I speak to members of my tribe to ask what they think. I then refine the idea further.

When you're building your product, think of it as if you're packing your backpack 🎒.

1/6👇🏻
You need for it to only carry along what is needed for the trip you're going to take.
And you need to take as little as possible because every ounce of extra will make you work harder over time 📈.
2/6👇🏻
This applies one-on-one for building product, too: pack too many features or just that little functionality that you want to put in there quickly. And you'll probably end up carrying its weight - whether it is in the form of fixing bugs, handling support,...

Its been a trend these days to give #design #assignments prior to #hiring design #applicants, even though the design applicant is providing a #portfolio list of past works that is enough to judge his/her #thinking #process. Most of the times
such assignments are misused to collect #ideas for the project in action. We call it #Fakeathones. A Design homework that obviously have no scope for actual #UserResearch and #Usability Testing until hired based on one's opinion is not justifiable.
Designers and #UX are not idea generation machines. Idea Generation is a Team Work achieved by #DesignThinking, Stakeholder Discussions, User Interviews and many other such exercises. Designers, Design #Coaches, Design Mentors, UX #Strategist
