Another day, another tragic story of organ damage from #herbals:

27/F with #psoriasis of her face, trunk and limbs for 10 yrs. Now this is a tough disease to get, especially for a young woman. Appearance affected, social stigma attached, no easy cure but can be controlled..
Initially consults dermatologist, counselled, started on topical agents, but visible change takes time. Not satisfied and seeking "cure" without "side effects" they approach local practitioner who prescribes herbal formulation to take daily - which she dutifully does for 10 yrs
During a routine evaluation for unrelated back pain, a serum creatinine done is 8.1 mg/dl- shockingly high! Further evaluation and a kidney biopsy reveals interstitial fibrosis in the renal cortex s/o Aristolochic acid nephropathy!
Here is the cheeky little culprit 👇

A thread.
Investigating the extent of acceptance worldwide of the role of @Bioconlimited's #Itolizumab in the treatment of #Psoriasis - a disease that afflicts upto 2% of the population. I conducted a search on PubMed.
The search strategy was:
((Psoriasis[MeSH Major Topic]) AND (systematic review[Publication Type])) AND (itolizumab[Text Word])
Yielded 2 results. To be continued soon Image
I'll pick this threade up now.
One of those papers was a Cochrane review. Reliable, authoritative and influential. It always pays to check Cochrane Library for a review first. Image

I've had #psoriasis since I was 16, or I guess my DNA always had it but that is when it started. It didn't start with a rash or hives. Almost overnight, while I was living with two roommates in a 2 bedroom place, working nights, kinda going to school. Then is got me.
My skin blistered and bled on my arms, my legs, my chest, my face peeled back in bloody infected layers. I lost the hearing in my ears as the infection of over produced skin cells wrecked me. My penis split wide at the head, shaft covered in lesions.
The pain was excruciating. I lost my job in the restaurant. I had no insurance anyways. Homelessness followed. People could not bear to look at me. My eyelids bled freely.

OK #hospmed19, I had told myself I wasn't going to make another #tweetorial until next week to give myself a break, but I can't help but be motivated by all the amazing #tweeps at this meeting. Long story short, here's a #medthread on #PSORIASIS!

More and more, we are recognizing psoriasis to be a systemic disease. Aside from the psoriatic #arthritis we all know and love, there is more convincing evidence that psoriasis is linked with #cardiovascular disease and risk. As such, #multidisciplinary care is important!

There are many different variants of psoriasis. The most classic is plaque psoriasis, described commonly as "salmon colored plaques with micaceous scale."

Q: Ever notice how psoriasis doesn't really get impetiginized/superinfected but eczema does? Why do you think that is?
