Tuning into @DSAecosocialism's #TexasFreeze 101 webinar. Our TX comrades are discussing how this disaster is the free market at work - risk is socialized and rewards are privatized as private energy & the politicians who enable them put profit over light & heat for our people.
Analyzing who has been impacted most by the #TexasFreeze shows how climate and energy issues are inextricably linked to anti-racism, abolition, housing and so much more. Our communities of color, incarcerated, houseless, and disabled populations are most at risk.
How did capitalism lead to the #TexasFreeze? When we privatize our grid (or rely on investor-owned utilities, like DTE here in A2) the first priority is always to maximize shareholder profits - not to help residents afford electric bills or stay safe in weather emergencies.

@croselund @DemSocialists First of all, thank you for engaging in good faith! These are all really great questions.

So, how did we arrive at the conclusion that public ownership should be the first step to decarbonizing & democratizing the grid?

Short answer: lived experience & theory of change.
THREAD:
@croselund @DemSocialists Long answer:

This campaign started with us trying to work within the current system. We became parties in the Con Ed & National Grid rate cases to fight for lower rates and an end to the expansion of gas infrastructure.

And we learned that the PSC is completely ineffective 2/
@croselund @DemSocialists and unaccountable. They essentially told us certain parties have more of a voice in the process than others, and the entire proceeding was just designed to argue over how kuch profit Con Ed could make, not to actually grapple with our or @SaneEnergy's concerns about safety or 3/

Thread: Since there isnt a single 100% renewable private utility, people please stop talking about how historically public utilities are no better than private ones!

Our future is a public good. It demands a GND and 100% Renewable

Why settle for less than democratic control? 1/
Inherent in a private utility is making a profit for its shareholders. This is a fact.

It also means they will do what they are best at providing the largest amount of people service at the lowest cost.

This means focusing on existing grid with upgrades, not alternatives 2/
That is because alternatives are new infrastructure and cost money. They are cheaper once up, but that is new infrastructure to build.

It is part of the reason why New York State still is at 5% wind and solar!

The new offshore wind megaproject will bring that to 17% alone 3/
