Finally, the #GoldacreReview is published! (During Parliamentary Easter holidays, mid-ping-pong on the #HealthAndCareBill...)

It's 221 pages - each PDF page is a double page spread - so this could be a lo-o-o-ong [Thread].

Here goes...
First point to note, in the Terms of Reference (p5), is that this is about "access to #NHSdata by #researchers, #commissioners, and #innovators" - i.e. #Planning and #CommercialReUse - so it is directly relevant to the operation of millions of people's #NationalDataOptOuts... Terms of reference for the review 1. How do we facilitate a
"185 wide-ranging recommendations for us to explore", says @sajidjavid (p6). Gulp! Time for some coffee...

"systems that ensure #underrepresented groups are well represented" may (partly) refer to this "landmark review", which got off to a slow start:

gov.uk/government/new… The far-reaching independent review into potential ethnic bi

So what *is* this "Digital Regulation: Driving growth & unlocking innovation" policy paper? Another "strategy"? A white paper for #DPA2022?

If it's about #regulation, then how will @OliverDowden's "unashamedly pro-tech approach" protect people's #rights?

gov.uk/government/pub…
In his introduction to "#ThePlan", @OliverDowden says he'll "shortly publish a #plan for a pro-growth data regime" 🤔

If he has an ACTUAL plan, or frankly a clue, then why not just #publish the damn thing? Why all the waffle?

Hand-wavy platitudes like these 👇 ain't worth Jack:
Just so we're clear, this "#Plan" is supposed to "start a #conversation" about "#TenTechPriorities" that @DCMS published on a "shorthand stories"(?) page that DOESN'T ONCE MENTION PEOPLE'S #RIGHTS!!

dcms.shorthandstories.com/Our-Ten-Tech-P…

Does this Government think it can take us for fools?

why i am no longer publishing (my own) #research in #academic journals - a (long) thread 1/38

#AcademicTwitter #AcademicChatter #academicpublishing #academicjournals #peerreview #ecrchat #OpenScience #publicationbias

(some references at the end of the thread)
(i still have a few collaborative papers to write and these will be published properly for the benefit of my co-authors)

i will soon publish a paper on a pre-print server, with no intention of submitting to an academic journal. my reasons for this are manifold 2/38
1. #academia is inherently corrupt & the publication model facilitates this:
- unpaid labour (editors, peer-reviewers,& authors [ok, they do get paid by the uni which oft = public funds yet journals privately profit & we see none of this unlike other forms of publishing]) 3/38

Publish where, how, what you want to publish, when you want to publish, not where everyone else is publishing just because those places may have an air of prestige, desirability. Publish where the people you care most about will access to work, without others' imposed boundaries.
#Publish in many different kinds of places, with different scales. Be a human body that reaches out to the exact people -- your core -- you wish most to #read and be moved by your work.
I have this suspicion that your "core" readership is not "The Academy," but the folks, the gente, the familia/pamilya, mga kapwa-tao, mga kapuso.

How do you best reach them but to go where they are and where they gather, to bring your presence and your work there.

Is there a way to rebroadcast already published videos (like Documentaries, Tutorials & Conferences) just so a group of people can watch & comment on it together at the same time actively. Let's say Facebook Theater. @YouTube @Facebook Later it can be used for #VR. #F82019 #F8
@Livestream Do you provide Online Theatrical Experience by rebroadcast already published videos like documentaries, tutorials & conferences just so a group of people can watch & comment on it together at the same time actively. #theater #Coliseum #colosseum

I always liked personal journals as framing devices for Romantic or Gothic horror novels like in Dracula and Frankenstein. I decided to write a satirical thread using this same device but for a common #scientific #journey:
Personal Journal of Dr. Nicholas Gladman
-Day 1-
Our scientific voyage began this afternoon. I am excited for what we shall discover and observe. #Manuscript first draft almost complete. Weird dark clouds on the horizon but sure it is normal.
-Day 2-
Manuscript sent to co-authors for initial thoughts and edits. Am hopeful for quick turnover and minimal comments. Anderson died of freak roof collapse but I’m sure that doesn’t portend anything sinister.
